A bloody magnificent album front to back. Finnish death metal at its finest. Depravity's dark and cold riffs and haunting solos are unforgettable. Classic album \m/
Have you seen the thinking in tongues by suicide silence cover? That cover looks so bad like they looked up a stock image and then put their logo on in it. The logo and image are in different resolutions so the logo looks all clean while the background looks grainy. And it has this shitty gothic font for the title of the single.
There's something incredibly alien & surreal about Finland's early death metal scene in both sound & artwork, this is an excellent example (Demilich will be mentioned due to the artwork, of course) ... the less traditional releases (Xysma, 90s Amorphis etc) also come to mind, the Finns seem to have a way of conjuring the mystical & otherworldly. Fantastic stuff!
I agree. It has a mystical quality. A lot of the "prog" is there as listenable weirdness as opposed to wandering wankiness. The groove is rarely absent even when it gets technical. So just like bolt thrower I can listen to it all day without feeling like I have to fucking sit and pay attention to get it. Like demilich is gorguts prog not dream theater/rush prog lol. I mean that stuff is fine just not my thing. And the . I also think that there's some subconscious "folk" or Finno-ugric ethnic music influence even when it's *not* a band deliberately incorporating those elements. I grew up hearing lots of Finn folk music and sometimes I hear the melodies and even rhythms in Finn osdm bands that aren't supposed to or generally understood to have folk elements. I also personally appreciate the relative lack of sexual violence and rape as a lyrical theme like slam Floridian and us in general stuff has because I hate that shit whether people think it's lame to feel that way or not.
@@asafoetidajones8181 yeah you're right impaled nazarene definitely doesn't have lyrics like that. or plenty of other bands from your nation. singling out US is bullshit and you know it. It's mostly germans who are doing that perverted stuff.
After a few songs the structures are predictable -- which is not a derogatory statement. These melodies are somewhat quasi-predictable and it creates a ~comforting, relaxing~ atmosphere of death metal sound tracks of the mind.
@@musiccompilations6176 dude. I work double shifts. I need some fucking death metal on my way home to relax me. I just need something hard hitting to ease my sore muscles. Good ass death metal will do it. Soft rock won't cut
Definitely my favorite Finnish death metal album and one of my favorites overall. There is something about the atmosphere of Finnish death metal that other countries don't have or don't do as well at least, can't quite put my finger on it, but it's perfect.
As a Finnish myself, i agree Finnish death metal is so fucking gloomy and dark compared to most countries! It's probably the coldness of our winter that can be heard in the sound :)
@@ManoSaarinenCarmanen81 as a mexican i think Finland is something special and would love to visit they have amazing metal knives and history i cant contain my joy when thinking about it
@@ManoSaarinenCarmanen81 You are right, here I can hear the same cold and dark sound that is characteristic of old Finnish death metal such as Cartilage, Demigod, etc., cult bands. \m/
It's a very interesting production on this album. The guitars just sound really icy, really cold. I don't know why, but that's the vibe I've always gotten from it. Unleashed's third record Across the Open Sea has a similar production. It makes for some really unique sounding death metal, and would have been a fine sound for frosty black metal. Edit: And now I think about it, Mordicus' Dances from Left record has a similar production as well. Can anyone recommend any other records that sound like the three I've mentioned here?
This is how Finnish death metal sounded in the early 90's, as well as some of the more underground Swedish death metal of the time. Definitely among my favourite sounds from that era. I too recommended Darkthrone's Soulside Journey, check out also early Therion, Cartilage, Gorement, Goddefied, maybe not quite same production, but similar cold dark atmosphere. 🤘
Death metal but played in a way as to evoke feelings of black metal. Top 5 album for me in terms of palpable atmosphere. Instantly transports you to a graveyard at the edge of time
A Cavernous of Old-School Death Metal Masterpiece must be listened to a superb artwork album cover in blue such a painful artwork also a great Finland Death-Metal not as heavy as Demigod or Demilich but still kickass Death/Metal a true classic😈👿.

Don't know about Demilich but to me this release sounds more like Necrophobic - you know, a good mix of death metal and black metal a-la Dark Funeral or something like typical Swedish black metal being released before such stuff from Sweden became popular.
I think the mention of necrophobic is especially evident in track 2. the bassists Sigillum Diaboli demos also was a sort of very black death metal but less melodic than depravity.
I just noticed that after years of listening to this album. There are 2 versions of this artwork so I'll have to look more closely now. Always loved this artist he did so much of the Finnish OSDM stuff

Sad only few people know them
As cheesy as the artwork is, I still prefer it over the crappy CG artwork we get today. I love shit like this.
The best Metal album covers looked like art class workups of the idea you had scribbled on your notebook.
All glory to the fanzine style. Carbonized's "For the security" and Morpheus MLP, as an example.

so good and relaxing classic death metal
I think the haunting melodies of finn death can certainly be said to have a relaxing or spacey quality to them.

Some of the riffs sound rather black metal too
Ageless material, with just the right duration. Gently oozing similarly as Demigod.
