  • The big boy from China has arrived. It slots in nicely between utes like the HiLux and Ranger and bigger utes like the Tundra and F-150. But, does it have enough poke to make a splash? Paul Maric takes it for a comprehensive test drive to find out.

    I appreciate that its a big old ute, and 480nm isnt a heap given its size/weight, but its funny hearing paul say “480nm isnt all that much”. 480nm in a ute about 10 years ago was unbelievable. The hilux from 2005-2015 only had 340 odd nm’s. The tunes they had in utes in the mid 2000’s were super mild compared to where theyre at now.

    • @holidaymail
      @holidaymail Месяц назад +3

      I also don’t see the point of complaints that 480nm isn’t 500nm. Is that small amount extra all that noticeable?

    • @ubernoob103
      @ubernoob103 Месяц назад +2

      @@holidaymail fair call hey. Maybe torque scales differently to HP regarding the “seat of the pants” experience - possibly 20 whole NM’s would be felt more than 20hp? Spitballing here of course.
      I have to agree with you though. 480 is so close to 500 you’d think it doesnt matter.

    • @DW-10
      @DW-10 Месяц назад +3

      I think the point is not 480 vs 500. More like 480Nm in a XXkg vehicle with material turbo lag vs 500Nm in a Xkg vehicle with good turbo response. Given power is a factor of rpm and torque and there is a greater disparity in kw than there is in Nm output, either it has a much lower rpm ceiling or the torque curve falls off relatively quickly at higher rpm. So a laggy, peaky torque delivery.......never going to feel "fast".

I am a bit disappointed with the Alpha. I was hoping for a btter ride, but actually when test driving it this one feels harder than the regular ute. WTF happended to the coil spring set up in the back? Also, the 8 speed ZF seemed to be better than the 9 speed auto. And no rear window control button by the driver side? Having a ‘Rolls Royce looking’ interior is actually a highly undesirable characteristic for a work ute that is actually tasked with performing work. Vinyl floors, hard plastic surfaces, canvas seats are far more preferable, because you and your vehicle are going to get dirty at some stage, and these materials are much easier to maintain. These cheap ass synthetic leatheroid and plastichrome Chinese Utes will rapidly fall apart, especially in a harsh environment.

    The one question i was hoping might be answered directly is whether you see enough value to jump from spending, say, the mid forty thousands on Cannon X..to potentially in the low sixty thousands for an Alpha. Or whether the Alpha just points to the X being really good value for what it is. Keen to know how your spending decision would play out..

      It has a Borg Warner torque on demand 2 speed transfer case. EVERY drive mode except eco has 5-50 percent of torque going to the front depending on conditions.
      When you start the car it is in normal mode which is AWD.
      Cross country expert mode locks the clutch pack in the transfer case (4h), 4l has a gear reduction and locks the clutch pack in the transfer case.

    You say more than once that the throttle needs recalibration because of lag off the mark but this assumes the lag is a calibration issue not a hardware issue. It may well be that the turbo needs time to spool in which case, no amount of calibration of the throttle is going to fix that.

    I have a suggestion for you Paul... I suggest trying cars that are 5 or 10 years old... and the experiment is comprehensive so that we can see how much power the car's engine has lost... and if it is a four-wheel drive car, what is the car's ability to pass the tests... and let's see to what extent... The quality of the materials used in the car...because all car companies say we are the best but use and the passage of years are the true standard for use
