I have grown iris for years. I would have separated the two iris, cut off the mother rhizome & cut the leaves into a fan shape to keep them from falling over. The one on the left looks like it is two iris. You do keep the top of the rhizome on top of the soil, make a little mound to put the roots in the ground & I also trim the roots a bit.

Thanks! I hadn't thought there was a method. There's so much more that needs to be addressed. 1. Should you break a rhizome apart to make them face in the same direction? 2 How far apart do you plant irises from each other? 3. . How many irises do you plant together to make an attractive cluster? 4. How do you know know when to divide them into a new grouping?? 5. How many years does it take for them to start blooming again after transplanting? If they don't bloom again what could be the cause? 6. Out of curiosity, where do the seeds come from? 7. Where does the flower emerge from?
Christine Ribone; Answering your questions in order: 1. Which way you plant your rhizomes in the *long term* doesn’t make a difference. In the *short term* it does…..short term meaning straight away you would plant the fan leaves facing fanned out to the view you want to see them. (Like holding a set of playing cards that you are viewing fanned out and the rhizome would be your arm holding the cards in front) 2. Plant singly or in groups of 3 12”-24” apart depending on the iris’s rhizome size as their are various sizes and species. 3. Personally I think plant 3 groupings of 3 rhizomes planted 24 inches apart would look very nice if you have the space as they will fill in the area and should be divided every 3 to 5 years to keep reproducing and it’s also visually appealing to see a full area of irises than an area with bare spots…kinda starts to look like a dead area. 4) If your Irises have grown into a circle ⭕️ Pattern with a bare spot in the middle or an “s” pattern with bare spots - its time to divide as the rhizomes are overcrowding each other. If they haven’t been tended to they will start squeezing each other out and will stop producing flowers also they will have leaves. 5. Depending when you plant and your climate. I’m zone 8 and I get lots of rain, I also have 4 true seasons. If I plant early September the irises have time to settle into their new home and bloom in the spring. If planted early spring it is possible to get flowers, but most likely be the following spring. If your Iris isn’t blooming it could be several things: *planted to deep or to shallow. *they need well draining soil so they don’t rot or dry out. *over crowded. * not enough sun ☀️ meaning they need 6-8. They don’t like to be shaded out by other plants….plan a spot just for them. 6) Irises are planted from rhizomes not seed. 7) it grows a stem between the fan leaves which that stem will produce a flower. I noticed on my variety when 7 fan leaves are produced then I know it will flower….the inner leaves ( the middle of your fan are your newest leaves ….your stem and flower will come up from and your outside leaves are oldest they will naturally fade, turn a brownish color and you can pull those outer leaves off and toss for a tidier appearance.

Hi Catherine - good to find your channel! (I remember you from our days with CSU Extension!) My irises have been so neglected over the years, and they are still as beautiful as ever, so they are definitely a very adaptable plant.
Hi Holli! It's great to hear from you!!! I hope life is finding you well. I agree, irises are one of the most easy care plants I have. I'm glad to hear that yours are doing well, too.
Thank you! This is very helpful! I had no idea! I saw these unusual plants a few weeks ago on my other property which was purchased maybe a year ago. I knew they were something special so I dug up a few and brought them home. The ones I dug up don't have the large rhizome that yours has. I will go back and try to find the original. There are quite a few of them!
Awesome vid, thankyou so much!! I have a question: One of my irises has begun to lean due to heavy winds; it is not perpendicular to the ground, I would say it's at about a 30 degree angle. It was perpendicular when I planted about a month ago. Will this effect it's health and flowering? Should I dig her up and replant or let it be? Thank you!
Great video... Just have one question. I am assuming you were planting beardless iris? I have always been told to allow a bearded iris rhizome to rest partially above ground (not covered on top). The sides being about 2/3 into the soil. You covered the rhizome in your video, so I want to make sure I understand why this was done. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing as I have learned something new and need to check and possibly adjust my irises that have beautiful, lush green fan blades that are over 30" that have yet to produce a single bloom in Zone 9B.
In all my years of gardening, I finally had blooming yellow irises because I watched this video before planting last year! Thank-you! :)

Great! I hope they bring you lots of joy for many years to come.
I have been a little frustrated because my iris have never bloomed. Thank you for your video. My iris are dug too deep. Now I can fix the problem. ❤
Glad to hear that you can try something different and hopefully fix the issue. Good luck!
Also if to many clumped together will not bloom
Very informative. Thank you. Was thinking 🤔 should I add fertiliser when planting?
Thank you, that was an excellent video; succinct and clear.
Your video is very thorough and helpful. Thank you.
Great video, you sure did a great job explaining all about these tricky plants to grow!!
I just love irises ❤
Thank you for amazing tutorial 🙂👍
I have eight to plant
I see where I have made mistakes in the past
Thank you for your very informative video
Our irises Grow in water on the edge of the pond, and in water containers and doing very well
Hi Catherine - good to find your channel!
Thank you for solving the Iris Mystery!
Great job explaining the process. Thank you.
Very helpful, thanks! I have a nice clump of neglected irises in my new location, so I appreciate this information very much!
Thanks for your video! I’m wondering if Iris needs lot of sunshine? And I’ve planted them at very shady corner😢. Thank you! ❤❤
Thank you!
This was best video imo for irises
Great tips thank you! How far apart should I plant multiple rhizomes?
Very good information, I have planted wrong.Thank you for the tutorial!!!!!
This video is very helpful to me, I did everything wrong, now I can try again, THANKS 😊!!!
Excellent video. Awesome job. Very knowledgeable.
So glad I found your Chanel. Thank you for all this information. Have a great day
Very glad it was helpful!
Thanks!
Informative video, today I planted 2 rizomes.
Thanks for sharing as I have learned something new and need to check and possibly adjust my irises that have beautiful, lush green fan blades that are over 30" that have yet to produce a single bloom in Zone 9B.
Very informative. Thanks. I needed to know why only one was booming. Thanks again
Glad it was helpful to you. I hope you have great success!
