    Good job! Years ago I had a friend who was an iris hybridizer. Here are a couple tips he gave me. Cut the fans in order to direct energy to the new roots. Also remove spent flowers so the plant doesn’t set seeds. He also suggested planting three rhizomes in a triangle for a better effect when they bloom. Happy planting!

    Thank you so much. I remember when I was about 8yrs old, my mom had some irises in the back. I always cut them and watered them. One year I remember digging them up and spreading them out within that little strip of garden bed. How on earth did I know how to do that? My mom never worked in the garden. It was the only flowers we had. I remember being so happy that next year they bloomed! I guess that’s exactly when my love of flowers and gardens started. Thank you for finding that memory from your video here. I’m 64 now and I love to garden. But I have NO irises in my beds! What a shame. I bet I do next spring. Lol. God bless and have a great weekend. 💕👏🏻

    As someone who has been dividing iris like crazy over the last 5 or 6 years. My tip is to always cut them about 6 inches above ground before you start dividing them, it makes it a lot easier to work with and less overwhelming.

      I should have read this first! I have a clump of what looks like 25 new irises all clumped within a 2 foot x 2 foot x 1 foot… I don’t even know how to move it without breaking it!

    • @randyman8984
      @randyman8984 Год назад +6

      @@HildeAzul they are one of the toughest plants you can grow. I don't think you can kill them and you certainly ain't going to hurt them if you break them. I've got a a couple of clumps that I haven't divided in a while and they need it badly. Another good thing about iris is they don't grow real deep in soil, so should be easy to dig up

    I just divided mine a few weeks ago. I had never heard about the 7 leaves...good to know. I just planted these a year ago and had plenty to divide and share with some friends. It cost me about $11 to mail and I used an ice pick to punch holes all over the boxes I shipped them in. Before I shipped them, I removed all the dirt and soaked them for a couple of hours in a 10:1 bleach solution. I let them air dry on a covered patio. I’m hoping they will grow for my friends because I enjoyed them so much this Spring! Oh, I also threw away the mother rhizome. Those I replanted have taken hold very quickly. I had to go back and add a little more soil (Purchased) in areas where the roots were exposed from settling in. Make sure you water too! In zone 7a, the first bloom came on my birthday in mid-April.

    I inherited my mom's place about 15 yrs ago now, where I've been living since divorcing in '97. She planted Iris's here that I know most be 30 yrs old. Honestly they don't look like they've been divided ever to me, I've never divided them. Thinking it's about time, they too are blocked more now because of a tree over the yrs. Great tip about when to do it too. Always love seeing Mischa at the ready to help, and what a smarty pants.

    Very interesting...usually when I divide & replant my irises I cut about 2 inches from the rhizome. I just cut straight across. I don't cut in a fan shape. I've seen other people do that and I don't expose the rhizome because I have too many animals/critters that run around and will pull them right on up so make sure they are good and planted and covered. Maybe it's the type of soil that I have are usually always amend with hummus and manure. I believe my zone 6b. I know that they've changed the ranges🤷🏾‍♀️. But I did not know about the 7 leaves means it will flower that is awesome 👍🏾👍🏾 thanks for sharing that information

    Just basically stumbled on your channel . Looking for information on how to divide my irises. My 76 yo mother gave me a fairly big clump of irises from her iris bed. I was happy to get them, but unprepared for them as they were an unexpected gift. I brought them home,and place prepared. It was wrong time of year, I suppose. But I quickly put the entire clump in the ground. I got no blooms that , year. So I thought , next year. Then no blooms again, this year being 3rd year I was certain I would have plenty of iris blooms. I had 1 bloom. I figured out that they were over crowded when I got them ,so I am attempting to learn more. You have absolutely the best , easier, and visually show step by step how to do it. Thank you . I have subscribed, looking forward to more videos on different gardening tips. Thank you , you are very much appreciated.
