What's the stinkiest ingredient you've ever encountered?
Neem powder
It smells so bitter 😭
Tamanu oil 😅😄
Shea butter
Neem oil 🤭
silly me, I did make a lip balm using the lanolin lmao. Then I saw you mention it the other day. Never again lol.
I like the smell of lanolin but I grew up on a sheep and cattle property. When the shearing took place we used to spend time in the shearing shed, especially during the school holidays. Its part of my childhood.
That sounds so lovely ❤️ Thank you for sharing! I am now thinking about scents other people may not enjoy that I do due to lovely memories...
Great thing about Cupuacu Butter is it can be masked with the right combination of ingredients or the right essential oil. I use it all the time.....very rich in scent indeed...but much more easy to camouflage than neem oil.😁...
Walnut Oil is definitely a tricky scent for me....peeeyouu😝.... But I still use it occasionally 🙄
Love your descriptions of these lol!
Your descriptions of the smells are spot on.
😄
Thank you SO SO MUCH for this specific information.
You are so welcome! ❤️ Thanks for watching!
I made broccoli glycerite once (I had just leant how to make glycerites and I was on a making spree 😀) and let me tell you, I have never smelled anything that bad! I have neem oil and unrefined lanolin, those don’t compare to the smell that hit me when I opened that mason jar of broccoli glycerite! I couldn’t wash the smell of the mason jar 😂😂
OH wow 🤣 I had never even imagined making broccoli glycerite 😂That sounds downright weapons-grade bad LOL
@@HumblebeeAndMe 😂
Very well explained & also to check on the smell of each product before using it, to avoid any problems. You are truly amazing girl. Thanks!
Thank you so much 😊
Thanks for the tips!
Yep your totally right! I have hydrolyzed silk that mildly smells, but it covers easily, thank goodness!
BTMS 50 smells fishy, but it doesn’t smell at all in formulations and it’s make the best silkiest lotions and creams
You must be lucky with your BTMS (as a, I, thankfully!)! If you read through the comments here there are some from people who've been far less fortunate in the low-stink BTMS department :)
Thanks Marie for the review of these ingredients. Some of them I'm familiar with ...like neem🤢 totally with ya on that one, it's just not one I want to use. I do use the tiniest amount of lanolin in my lipbalm but I still use refined. The other things I haven't used yet but this has been so helpful for me when I do choose to use them!
Neem 🤢 Life is too short!!
Totally agree, some silk products have a sweet, light, pleasant scent, and some have a very musky, musty scent. I personally LOVE the scent of unrefined, chocolate-y cupuacu butter! I have never once had a bottle of honeyquat that smells. It has virtually no scent, maybe a hint of a light, soapy type scent. I think if your honeyquat doesn't smell good , than it's no good!
My honeyquat has smelled like pickled fish since the day I got it, sadly :( I will have to try again using a different supplier!
@@HumblebeeAndMe I had a bottle of polyglycerol-3-oleate that smelled of fish the day I got it from one supplier (MC) , but then purchased from another (FSS) and it smells like nothing! I always purchase honeyquat from Lotioncrafter. Just received a new bottle a few days ago and it's A+ , maybe try them! ☺️
@@HumblebeeAndMe Thought I'd mention, I've processed lanolin straight from saturated, oily wool pieces from a local sheep farm, and it smells soooo good. It is a dark green color, very, very unrefined (the wool is heated in water, and the lanolin skimmed from the boiling hot water, minimal processing). It has a warm musk, with notes of green grass and wildflowers. To me it smells like a summer meadow with a scent akin to the musk of your skin after a day at the beach. It's quite easy to process too, just a matter of finding a farm with sheep, willing to part with a bit of their greasiest wool lol! I traded a block of our beeswax, and she gave me a bag full of lanolin heavy wool. As they sheer the sheep, the tool becomes funky with hair and lanolin, and most farmers throw it out, as it's not part of the fleece. So they were happy to part with it. I've experienced the scent of purchased unrefined lanolin and it's definitely a lot funkier, and I agree with your wet sheep comparison, and I'd add that it has oily, brash notes that are gasoline-like 🤣
Wow. Thanks for the insight on honeyquat. I have purchased honeyquat from 3 major companies and all 3 smelled horrible. I just thought this was a honeyquat characteristic 😬😳😮
Thanks Marie your all vedios are very informative 👍
Glad you like them!
@@HumblebeeAndMe ❤
All the honeyquat I have tried stinks but I can never smell it in the finished product so that’s a good thing. Great video!
I think I will have to give it another go :)
Neem only! Yes! I have such incredibly dry skin. And, a customer wanted neem oil soap. OMG! I have PTSD. It did not smell good out of the bottle. But, it got so much worse in my cold process soap as it got really, really warm. My daughter says it doesn't have a smell at all. It has been two years since I made that batch. But, I swear I can smell it still.
Oh gosh, I can only imagine the smell!! I have definitely made some things that haunt my nose years later as well 🤣
Thanks for this information 💞
Thanks for watching!
Well darn I just learned some new things. I def have homework to do.
Neem oil, have yet to use it.
Lanolin nipple cream
Kupatsu butter refined
Hydrolyzed silk how it was hydrolyzed?
Cationic ingredients
( Btms 50/ btms 25 )
This was sooooo helpful❣️ Neem oil is one I’ve always debated on trying and I have decided (as you also mentioned) despite its benefits I shall pass. 😄
It's very wise, believe me! 😋🙈 I was so wrong when I finally decided to use it my solid conditioner. After many-many years of declining this ingredient as it is really stinky! 😅😅 And what I've got? Oh yes! Very stinky odd bars only for personal use not for sale. Because there is no person in my audience who could have this for money. 🙈😅
I've fought with Neem Oil by masking it with a mix Lemon and other citrus fragrances. And I lately learned that I can mask bitterness with a bit of baking soda.
I love watching your videos from South Africa. They are so informative.
I bought your book - Make-it-up which I love.
I love the colour and gloss of the lipstick 👄 💄 you are wearing in this video.
If this is one of your own formulations is it in the book or where would I find this recipe? Please let me know. Thanks
Thanks for watching & for your support! My lip colour is an in-development lip gloss I hope to share soon-ish :)
@@HumblebeeAndMe oh wow. Can’t wait to watch this video
Looooool at your descriptions 🤣
🤣 I had a lot of fun with this video!
@@HumblebeeAndMe esp funny was the poop 💩 comment. Good to 😹 laugh
I love neem and it is funky but makes a great prepoo and scalp treatment. 😷
You are braver than I am! I can't imagine putting neem in my hair 🤢
I always keep neem oil on hand for bug repellent and I’ve even rubbed it into a rash from bug bites. I spray down our pants and shoes with a neem spray before we hike and I used it in the garden for years so I just associate it with the outdoors.
I like lanolin scents a lot, but there may be two reasons for that because I can certainly smell the stuff in lanolin that’s off-putting to others but I like it. I’m something of an oenophile and I associate lanolin with the semillon grape, which is delicious. Also, on both sides of my family, I come from hundreds of years of shepherds before they came to the americas; my mother’s maiden name even translates to shepherd. Maybe the love of sheep and wool is inborn? 🤷🏼♀️🤣
I’ve used lanolin on my lips and hands for about 35 years. I can’t even smell it. It works well for me
Aww, I love neem oil! Smels nutty to me :)
Hmmm, I wonder if perhaps yours was... fresher? From a crop grown in a different sort of season than mine? I can kind of see nutty, but it's underneath a whole lot of garlic and pong :/
@@HumblebeeAndMe I am in the UK so quite possible.
Maybe I got lucky and my next bottle will not be as pleasant. Mind you, I do like some odd smells :)
I bought Neem oil to make bug spray for my house plants. That used up 0.02% of the bottle. So I bit the bullet and decided to make soap with the hope it would work as a bug repellent for me when working in the garden. I used an essential oil blend that works well with garlic and so far my testers have given it the ok. Let's hope it works 🙂
Fingers crossed!
Can you make a DIY lip plumper? I like the toofaced one
I'll keep it in mind-thanks for the suggestion!
😂🤣😂🤣🤣 this was great, funny and, insightful
I'm glad you enjoyed it! 🤣
2:53, omg I laughed so hard I spewed my coffee!
🤣
Rancid is the one thing that always makes me😫😒. Raw ingredients like Shea took a bit of getting used to because the first time I ordered shea, the refined butter was definitely rancid. That sour acrid stank is just the worst.
Shea in its unrefined state smells a little sheepish. Refined Shea on the other hand has a nice scent in my opinion. Only, find an ethical supplier because A Lot of suppliers, some unethical but some without quality control., will sell rancid Shea Butter! Its funny how they always have the same response, "That is the nature of Shea Butter, it has a unique, strong odor." My response: "Yes if it's unrefined it does smell a bit sheepish but when it's refined... NO it should not!"
You can tell Shea has gone bad when it has a very sharp smell, sour and acrid. I purchased some, from Sweet Essentials, and it was beyond stank. It actually felt like it was burning a whole through my olfactory. I let them know several times and they gave me the line above. "Shea butter has a unique, strong.... "
Yeah right, they are talking to a perfumer and a skincare formulator with over 7 years experience. And someone that uses huge quantities of shea in lotions and creams. They wouldn't take it back. Scoundrels..lol! They lost a loyal potential customer.
It really is nasty! Rancid (for me) is always paired with disappointment, too-"awww crap, this went bad before I finished it 😓".
I wash my face and body with Aleppo soap because it's all natural and does wonders for my skin, but the first time I bought it and smelled it, I was really taken aback. It smells very earthy, and kinda stale/musty, sort of like what you smell when you enter an old castle, or the basement of an old building. I'm guessing the main culprit is the laurel oil because regular olive oil soaps don't smell like that. Luckily I got used to it, on the body the staleness goes away and it just smells nice and earthy, but ooooh boy was I surprised when I first opened it.
How interesting! I've never encountered Aleppo soap, but now I know what to expect if I do :) Thanks for sharing!
Aleppo soap is made from a mixture of olive oil and Laurel oil - which is the source of the smell you described. I adore it but it's definitely not for everyone lol
I've used Aleppo soap too and I thought the same about the smell but I got past that after using it on my skin, it was fantastic!
I once purchased 25 pounds of some really bad smelling shea butter from a reputable wholesaler. It smelled like it had come from a factory where everyone was a heavy tobacco smoker-days old tobacco residue! They subsequently lost my business after they denied anything was wrong with the product. I latter learned that the batch had probably been overcooked or burned during processing. Nothing I did to my formulation improved the smell. I had to dispose of the shea butter.
My supplier after I convinced him to import Polyquaternium 10 (I live in Israel):
"Here's your... stuff. It smells like death :D"
also, I had one customer that sniffed my shampoo bars and said it smells faintly of mustard. After scratching my head for a moment I let her smell my btms 50 - which is made of safflower. That was the culprit! I use a small amount in my products and was amazed she picked the smell. turns out, she's a perfumer 😂
🤣 Too funny! I must say... I think I am glad my sense of smell isn't as good as your customer's!
@@HumblebeeAndMe Me too! I have a great sense of smell but it's hard to compete with an experienced professional. She did end up buying the shampoo, which was funny.
I suppose if one's sense of smell is that amazing one would get used to a lot of products having some pong-y elements? 🤷🏻♀️
That shade of lipgloss on you looks good, in my opinion. Did you create it?
I did! It's not out yet but should be soon-ish :)
@@HumblebeeAndMe can’t wait. Big fan of shiny lips! Yep, I’m a hippie
Neem was the only thing (except for one formula an Indie made) that even slightly helped my hair, but yeah, I had to walk away from that stuff.
😬
really ...make yours then, I notice the store bought once smell awful...just felt your herb & infuse it yourself...
I opened a new bag of stearic acid without giving it the sniff test and it ruined my body butter. I tried to hide the smell with loads of lavender and sandalwood EO, but nothing could help the rancid smell of my otherwise so fluffy and creamy body butter :’(
Benzyl alcohol is smells awful hot can use it?
I totally agree with the neem oil. It wasn't worth the benefits.
oooh I was once very stupid and had a huge bag of modeling mask (peel off mask, very popular in korea). anyways I wanted to add a color to it so I ordered spirulina powder and stupid me put a good portion the thing in the whole bag...what a waste. it smelt so bad I couldn't even mask it with fragrance oil...threw that out and the half a bag of spirulina powder out
thanks for the lanolin tip!
Oh no! Does spirulina smell seaweedy? I have definitely ruined a few things with seaweed 🤢
@@HumblebeeAndMe i haven't worked with seaweed yet. but thanks for the heads up on the smell!
This video was 🤩 fun. Made me laugh
Thanks, Laurie!
Your face/makeup look 😍, btw!
Thank you! ❤️ The gloss is one of my own-in development 😉
I also spin yarn with a drop spindle with rovings and you end up with lanolin on your hand... it really turned me off from the idea of using lanolin in formulations
Very understandable, but also-what a cool DIY/hobby! Do you dye your wool as well?
@@HumblebeeAndMe i do... the whole yarn spinning came out of a desire to knit something and didn't have a project in mind.
I just love making things in general.
i think people are more impressed with the formulating... but i get alsorts of ideas in my head about things to try.
Mine cupuaçu butter smells divine, chocolaty, whisky kind of vibe. I really love it!!! Bacuri butter, well, that's another story!🤢 And of course I have a kilogram of it🙈🙈😫😅
Cuapasu butter I've gotten just smells like chocolate or Coco Butter so not getting a "Stink" 🤔
That sounds like a lovely upgrade!
I was waiting for you to say BTMS 25 & 50. They are the worst IMO. I made conditioner bars that smelled fishy once they were made. I was so mad lol
The first time I got btms 50, I opened the bag and took a big whiff! Ohmigosh the immediate gag I had 🤮 I am now more cautious when sniffing new ingredients 😅
I had similar experience with BTMS 50 in conditioner and lotion. It’s hard to cover its strong smell with any essential oil. Wish I had known this earlier. Thanks Marie for this insightful video.
OH nooooo, that would be SO upsetting! Especially with how expensive they are 😬
@@nsingh2155 what percentage are you using it at? And who is your supplier. I use btms50 all the time but never smell it in the final product even before scenting it
@@jessecurlgoddess7320 I used 5%. Bought it from aussie candle supplies although this ingredient is little hard to find here in Australia.
I use neem oil to control pest in my garden 😂
One man's rose garden is another man's midden. I hate chocolate so always look for refined coco butter, Palmer's Coco Butter, which to be fair is heavily fragranced, makes me gag like a cat.
The cupuacu butter doesn’t smell great….but you can cover it up with essential oils,,,,thankfully
I'd say it depends on the concentration-sometimes trying to cover up a scent with essential oils just ends up with essential oils + stink :/
@@HumblebeeAndMe hahaha true, you are such a great teacher 🥰🥰
I use a baobab and honeyquat in one of my lotions. Baobab is nasty! Honeyquat isnt bad at all
How interesting! What baobab product was it? I haven't noticed anything unpleasant about my hydrolyzed baobab protein, and I find the oil smells rather nice :)
Aloe vera powder 😂 I felt the smell in my throat
Keratin and lecithin can also smell bad
Good to know! I haven't encountered stinky versions of either, thankfully.
Camelina oil.(not to be mistaken for camelia oil) Omg I just ordered some from a NDA and it smells disgusting!!
Interesting! I'd been considering trying it but perhaps I'll steer clear...
For me, borage oil smells soooo bad. It made all my formulations stink and I always thought it was the Cetyl alcohol. Nope, just the stinky borage lol
OOoh yeah, those GLA rich oils can smell a lot like the floor of a meat department 😬
Your faces are funny 😄
For me its- wheat germ oil, cupuacu butter, vitamin E oil. Can;t stand their smell.
I added Korean red ginseng to a massive lip balm batch.. and it smells like cooked peas.. much regret
Ahhh nooooo! How heartbreaking! But also, what a funny description 😂
Sunflower lecithin 😷 Smells soooooo baddddd!!!
I will have to take your word for it 😬
Hands up for throwing neem oil into the trash bin cause it smells unbelievably horrible! ))))
🚮
Neem! It’s the worst. And, it’s so sad because it does so many wonderful things for your skin.
Agreed! 😬
Raw Shea is terrible
It can definitely be overpowering in a formulation! I don't mind the smell, but it has to be in the right sort of formulation to work.
@@HumblebeeAndMe I agree and I haven't found one yet. 😂 Don't think I want to.
Oh yes neep oil is so 🤮but I do use it still, and btms oh my when I smell that I was like wth why.
🤮 indeed!
The stinkiest ingredient has to be garlic essential oil
Oh WOW, yeah, I can imagine! 😬🤣
That would probably only be good in a hair Oil or Pre Poo
What? Never heard of it. Got to be kidding. Maybe if you mix it with Dirt essential oil…nope 🤢
Bacuri butter stinks horribly
I've never tried it! What's it like?
Omg, yesss...but I use it in my eczema cream and it works wonders but it definitely stinks....
I wonder if you got a rancid batch?
Bacuri butter in its raw form is very dark and smells like rum cake. So it should be used in a small percentage otherwise when mixed with other ingredients it comes out very yellow. The smell reminds me of chocolate rum. Yum:) It is very rich so very little is needed. Can be used in tanning lotions, face balms and body creams. Its important to get it from an ethical supplier otherwise it won't smell good if it's rancid.
GuarCat
OH gosh yes!
lol
😍😐😍😍😍
😄
hemp seed oil - smells like fish oil.
Oh yikes! Mine smells grassy/green, but not fishy 😬
If people can use lard in soaps ! People who can eat fish comfortably , if people can eat even pork and beef comfortably!!! Neem oil is NOT THE WORST INGREDIENT AT ALL BEYOND ALL THESE STUFF !
You cannot define what stinks it depends on peoples own choice !!!!
Neem is divine !
Lol 😂 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
NEEM HANDS DOWN!!!! Yikes and YUCK!!!
🤢
Hysterical. I use and love Lanolin but the smell.....oh man. It's SO nasty. Also, btms50.....yuck, yuck, yuck. #gag
😬🤢
What ghastly thing is castor oil 👎👎👎👎😕
