This Audi Sport Quattro S1 E2 Replica Is Keeping Historic Group B Rallying In Motion

- This week we take a turbocharged, all-wheel drive ride in Volker Gehrt’s 1985 Audi Sport Quattro S1 E2 replica through the rural roads just outside the central German state of Thuringia.
Years ago while attending an auto show with his wife, Volker found an Audi Sport Quattro rally car scale model for sale at a vendor’s booth. Always a proponent of Audi’s iconic gravel and tarmac racer, Volker purchased the die-cast and made the little Group B toy a tasteful desk ornament. Over the course of countless days spent working in his office with the model nearby, Volker found himself infatuated with the idea of building a full-sized tribute.
“With time I thought that there must be a way to build the car. I had to find a way to do it,” says Volker. Coincidentally and initially unbeknownst to him, Volker happened to cross paths with Roland Gumpert-the leading engineer behind Audi’s famous AWD drivetrain. After becoming acquainted with the Grandfather of Quattro, one day the two enthusiast friends started chatting about cars, reminiscing on the Golden Era of Rallying.
That’s when Volker proposed building an accurate tribute to the most extreme version of the various Group B Quattros. Gumpert ecstatically agreed to assist, using his motorsports connections to source parts and manuals needed to properly recreate the racing identity of the homologation hero. It was decided that the build would pay homage to the E2 iteration that Walter Röhrl drove to victory in the 1985 Sanremo Rally-Audi’s first and only ‘85 WRC season win.
To make the recreation all the more special, Gumpert made a surprise arrangement to have Walter Röhrl meet with Volker during the build. “I’ll never forget when he arrived,” reflects Volker. “He stood in front of the car and said, ‘Mr. Gehrt, I feel like I am having déjà vu. I am taken back to Audi Sport looking at my winning car.’” Humbled, Volker smittenly states, “That is one of those stories I’ll never forget.”
Proudly wearing Röhrl’s Sharpie’d inscription across the roof, Volker’s dream Quattro recreation has been finished to resemble Röhrl’s original racer down to the finest details. From every sponsor vinyl, light, toggle switch, and bolt, everything has been carefully selected and painstakingly assembled to appropriately revive and reverberate the original legend.
Once dreamy-eyed over rolling his model Audi Quattro across his office desk, Volker now gets to live his flame-spitting, gravel-slinging, Group B fantasy behind the wheel of his very own life-size car. “The feeling I get when I put on a racing suit, a helmet, and then just start the engine, it always gives me goosebumps.”

Well then, I guess I'll just spend the whole day watching all the s1 and group-B videos ...again
Me too .. Same feeling
YES, THAT THE LEGEND AND A FORD COSWORTH BEATER ALL DAY LONG.
I feel you dude, been there done that several times. Passion for cars is infinite and sincere
that a well spent day my friend ;)
I recommend watching Marvdogger2
Arguably one of the best sounding engines of all time, EVER, in the history of ALL car on the planet.
Not aguably, it IS the best sounding engine ever! Damn I miss my '86 Coupe...
Of course its 'arguably one of the best sounding'; that's a completely subjective thing. You could claim and argue that ANY engine is 'the best sounding'. How do you define "best"? How do you rate it? Does it mean the same thing to everyone? And what does "one of" mean? How small is the field? If "the best sounding engines" is, say, the ten best sounding engines, then the Audi I5 may or may not be on that list...it all depends on who you ask. But "one of" could mean ANYTHING. As opposed to the thousands of pedestrian designs that power commuter cars worldwide, the Audi is one of a limited number of hundreds of racing engines. Provided you think that the sound of a loud, aggressive engine IS superior, it is one of the best sounding engines by mere default. It's a race car engine, of COURSE it is one of the best. What you actually mean is "I really like the way this car sounds and I would rate it highly on my personal list of best sounding engines, and many others would agree with me". But of course you don't say that, you just go around making meaningless statements.
@@justforever96 I bet you're fun at parties...
I'd say it's on par with audi's r8 10cyl, and lexus lfa, and ferrari f40. But yeah, 5cyl is really hard not to love.
@iwontdieofdeath wrote this 5 years ago on the video about André Lotterer’s daily driver..
As Michèle Mouton herself said when asked what she missed the most about Group B:
*"The noise of the Quattro, I think even today we miss that kind of noise"*
As a kid living in the states in the 80's, rally racing was rarely shown on television. When it was though, I was enthralled. I remember a rainy Saturday afternoon, watching through the fuzz of crappy living-in-the-boonies reception, as this little car with the "sorta Olympic rings on the grill" screamed and slid and jumped through the mud and woods of some unknown country. It blew my elementary-aged mind and at 8 years old, the Audi Quattro was the first car that I fell in love with. My hat's off to Herr Gehrt for building my earliest childhood dream.
A real S1 E2 won the Olympus Rally run out of Olympia, WA in 1985 with Hannu Mikkola at the wheel. The factory Audi team sent it to the US Rally as a shakedown prior to its debut at the Argentina WRC event. I was lucky enough to see it run the Olympus.
Who's cutting onions?

I legit got chills reading that.
Danke Herr Gehrt das Sie diese einmalige Legend wieder haben aufleben lassen!
I have two things to say.
1- This video should be at least 30 minutes long
2- I want one sooo bad.
This were just the two things I thought before reading your comment😂
dude honestly, i couldnt believe it .. the video was just over, i feel like theres so much more to show and tell about
I remember seeing the original Audi Quattro, I was living in West Germany at the time, serving with the Canadian NATO forces based in Lahr, I was heading home, crossing the Autobahn, when this small car with a huge rear wing pulled off the autobahn, crossed over and headed back up the autobahn toward Karlsruhe, it was around 1980 I think and the car was all white with Ingolstadt plates on it. I can still picture now, then I saw the photos of it in Auto und Sport.
4:53 No garage is complete without a few naked lady posters...
High quality replicas are severely underrated in the car world
Was eine Ehre :D
Du baust ein Auto und der Walter will sich das angucken...
I recently got a chance to be in a SWB Group B Quattro going for it. 550-600hp and it was something i'll never forget. A real one actually used by Hannu Mikkola in the 80's
Awesome how he just casually talks about being best buddies with the inventor of Quattro and builder of the Gumpert Apollo.
I know, it's almost as if he was just a regular man like the rest of us, and those around him didnt worship him as a god on earth. Hard to comprehend, isn't it?
Gumpert didnt invented the Quattro System . Franz Tengler had the famous idea of the hollow shaft. The point where Quattro differed from everything that came before it. All-wheel drive without extra transfer case . Gumpert was "only" head of the Audi Sport rally team.
Mister Gehrt thank you so much to show us your car, your work, your emotions, your eperience. Goose bumps!
This is an AMAZING replica. No words, only goosebumps.
Group B > Anything else on Planet Earth
Echt tolles Auto!
Best machine ever.
Also , I have never seen a German expressing so much emotions. The power of a Quattro S1 I guess. :D
That's because all you know about Germans are the typical bullshit stereotypes. Of course, Its okay to do _that_, because they aren't 'ethnic' or brown-skinned or anything. Germany is a big place, and it's made up of dozens of smaller regions and subcultures. A 'typical' Bavarian looks and acts little like a 'typical' Prussian, who is your quinessential stereotypical German. Tihs man is from Thurringia. And of course, you can find jovial Prussians and cold, methodical Bavarians. Thats why they say you shouldn't stereotype people. Even if the stereotype is based in some fact (as it often is), it isn't safe to assume it applies to every person of that group.

@@justforever96 You sure like to throw in big comments with lots of words to seem smart. Yet you are the one becoming offended by a RUclips comment, something so trivial, that is how you can tell that although you act smart, you are dumb to the core, no understanding of different biospheres or people. You should find a new hobby because when you are online, no one cares who you are or what "facts" you have to offer, all you do is make us think "well he is a bit of a cunt, probably another sensitive soul".
@@mastrolegend9277 Please, just shut the fuck up, you idiot!
I'm German too, and I can asure you, that "William Walker" said nothing wrong about us Germans.
You seemingly know nothing about "Germans", because we are more than 83 million people in this country, and the cultural diversity in Germany is very wide. The "typically German" doesn't exist... You boring clown!
We simply aren't dumb enough to play by your primitive stereotype rules, which are still coming from Brits and all sorts of uneducated "Anglo-Saxon" culture people in 2020. You really know shit about Germans!
All what you know is your fucked up stories about the two big wars in the 20. century and the typically Prussian military culture, which is still in your minds. But I can tell you, this has nothing to do with the modern Germany from today, you uneducated clown!
The dumbest stereotypes about "Germans in general" coming from Brits, you can witness every two or four years, when football World Cup or Euro Championships are like "paradise" for all of your fucked up British yellow press, which are writing the most fucked up and dumbest stories about us Germans, but which has nothing to do with reality. Your disgusting idiot yellow press is still poisoning the heads of too many dumb Brits about Germany. You are still full with shit about ancient times, which has nothing to do with today.
The majority of Brits is seemingly still living in a kind of stupid "British WWII bubble", where even today Brits are still the big winners, and Germans still have the "Pickelhaube" on their heads and are marching in "Gleichschritt Marsch".... Absolutely facepalm!!!
In fact, this is so fucking boooooooooooooooooooring!
Just wake up, because your dumb stereotypes about Germans SUCK!
Just get a bit more education about the modern Germany from today and all the different kind of people and cultures, which you can find in this country!
@@Porsche1969 I'm gonna be honest, I can't be bothered to read all that, it has been a year since that comment, goodness me! Don't get so hurt, it's just a comment on a RUclips video, although I do know quite a bit about Germany, considering I am from Estonia myself, yes I learnt about the wars and I love Germany, I love the language even more. All I was trying to say was that you shouldn't get so up in arms about an innocent comment about a small stereotype about how Germans are precieved emotionally. Estonians are precieved in the same way, yet I quite enjoy the stereotype, not a big deal at all.
Now that is what you call a good story. I hope there are many more chapters.
I didn't want this video to end. Thank you, Ted and friends. I will rewatch this many times over!
This episode could have been an hour if it were allowed to be, WOW! I'm American and 47 years old and we had ZERO coverage of group B racing but as I got older I found out about and watch and listen to everything about it. For people around the world that followed it and got to see it live, well, your fortunate!
Get the lawyers out of the way, sign the waivers and get this series back up and running once again. From my understanding it wasn't always the car being too fast that killed the drivers! I don't want anyone risking their lives but I'm sure there's people out there ready and willing, as well as skilled, to pilot a 800+ HP modern group B car today!
This was one of the best vids to date, GREAT work Petrolicious!
Hab Pipi in den Augen... Emotion, Geschichte, einfach alles!👍
The story of this car deserves a full length feature.
Audi Sport Quattro, after so many years it’s still mesmerizing ❤️ the sound is absolutely gorgeous 🤩 one of the best cars ever build 👍
There is any video of the making of this car? I would like to see the all process
Not a video, but I found a series of images on this page: www.unfallservice-gehrt.de/audi_s1/bilder_s1/
Thank you
Herr Gehrt has a pretty serious operation, with 50 employees according to the website. So a project like this is not something for amateurs. His shop did the painting for the magnificent (and lamented) Wiesmann cars.
You can see that they aren't amateurs by just looking at the website and the pictures on it. They do so much different stuff, for example they also build rollover simulators to train people and emergency helpers how to extract themselves or a crash victim from a car that's come to rest on its roof after a rollover and so on.
Actually, there is a video I saw on youtube of someone making a replica audi s1 quattro. Isnt the same as this one
A lambo might have a v10 but that 5 cylinder is just legendary
Awesome story. I also appreciate you guys filming it in a way so I could read subs and still see that amazing car.
Perfect Saturday afternoon TV :) Thank you!
Fantastic video!
Seeing my favourite car go up in detail on this channel is awesome!
I asked for another audi video couple of months ago and here we are. This channel is so great. Thank you Petrolicious !!!!!!!
I can't believe that thing is street legal...
Germans make their 65t Leopard tanks street legal. No surprise here.
Matthias Schmitt this is legal. But not the stuff you want as somebody who is young..
Matthias Schmitt All rally cars are street legal, it is a requirement in all rally series since the cars have to be driven under their own power on public roads between stages.
Yep, they're street legal, that's the genius of rally cars.
They have to be street legal to drive between stages on public roads hence the reg plate, lights and indicators etc etc
One of your greatest stories to date. Loved it!
Petrolicious, you are a gift from the car gods, thank you for your skills to make such beautiful videos.
Es wird nie mehr ein faszinierenderes Gruppe B-Monster geben, als den S1....Allein der Sound ein Wahnsinn!
Absolutely superb, Petrolicious you've done it again. The story, the background and most importantly the sound 👍🏻.
I don't know what he's saying, but it's all beautiful. This video is beautiful. Many tears of joy have been shed over this masterpiece.
there is something magical about old rally cars, especially the iconic ones
Audi Sport quattro S1, para mim o melhor carro de rallyes do mundo, fantástico video, saudações aqui de Portugal.
I initially rolled my eyes at it being a replica, until I heard his story. That's just cool!
crazy, i'm at his shop at least two times a week, and now i randomly find this vid. awesome! always try to to peek into the garage when i'm there, and sometimes, when i'm lucky, the S1 is there too
The stories behind the cars you guys feature are always amazing. Keep the videos coming!
Best sounding rallycar ever.
That car has an awesome history, my dad would cry if he sit in a S1 ... For a lot of folks out there, it's THE machine
This is what real passion looks like.
Wow, when he talked about getting goosebumps, I got 'em too.
What a dream, to be able to afford to build a stunning replica of the mighty S1... love the Quattro and that 5 pot engine!
Was eine schöne Geschichte, ich finde es MEGA das das Auto auch genutzt wird und nicht nur rum steht🤗 sehr sympathisch
The story is unreal... Gotta love the passion about the car!
Fantastic story!! What a blessed man to have the creator of the Quattro aasist him in building his dream car...
Dear Petrolicious, please stop making videos, all this stuff on your channel makes me sad because I know I never can own or simply drive all these fantastic machines.
You have so much talent, I think that you could makes a Dacia Duster desirable.
Regards.
And sorry if my english isn't perfect.
Never say never. Some times it is a case of finding the right people, or an opportunity will present itself. I will be getting a Classic mini soon, its not a Ferrari or Porsche but its a car I know I will love and enjoy driving :)
I dream about so many cars, I know a life isn't long enough to simply drive them ^^
And nice for your Mini, a friend of mine had some (4 to be precise !), these are great little cars !
You never know. Have you watched the scooter vids? I have not seen one on this channel yet. In America we have Rat Rods. Rust can be beautiful.
I think the story of this car is so unbelievable and touching as the story of that guy who built up his own replica of a 1960 Ferrari Racer. But it is more unbelievable as the former Chief Manager of Audi Racing Roland Gumpert was involved and made it possible to built the car in this way. This will never happen again.
Your videos are of simply the best shots in the web, period!
Danke fürs hoch laden und für das bauen dieses Audi Meisterwerk's
This is hands down my favourite 80's car. I am going to own one of these..
Just want to say I love your channel and everything is beautifully shot
Volker Gehrt, what a true car guy. He is all passion about his car; love it!. Usually am not to keen about clones/recreations/copies, but the here it is all passion driven; no speculation or thinking in bragging rights. Good on you Volker, it is a great car you have, love the 2:29-2:33 segment!
Four years of high school German and I think I picked up about every ninth word. Didn't matter. Subtitles would have been a distraction from the visual appeal of the video itself while getting the owner to stumble through his thoughts in English would have stunted the passion he has for his car and driving. Another excellent job by the Petrolicious team!
Honestly one of the greatest sounding cars ever built. I place it second to the Rebello Datsun 240z video from this channel.
Hard to choose between this, the D-Type Jag, and the 250 GTO. I'm leaning Quattro at the moment.
dudeinc10 but he needs to drive it much harder to get the sound of those wastegates opening
Oh yeah, when driven in anger this thing would sound crazy. Still, I have enough grainy videos from the 80s to listen to.
best engine sound ever
The Quattro was revolutionary back then especially for its first ever 4 wheel drive technology applied to motorsports, gave it a huge advantage over its competitors. But one car in my opinion is the only one that could stand out against these Quattro monsters and actually win, that is Lancia with its 037 group B rally beast! I would love to have one, that car was just majestic in its performance (rwd) and looks! Those were the days of glorious rallying.
The Lancia 037 was obsolete. It only had an advantage on dry, clean asphalt roads with many tight corners, where the Audis had problems because the rally version drove without a center differential. That was also the reason why Lancia developed the Delta S4. A vehicle that, like the 205T16 and Ford Rs200, was superior to the Audis due to its design as a mid-engine vehicle on a space frame. Despite this, Audi still did quite well. And of course, who wouldn't like to have one of these rally legends in his garage, as an Audi fan I would also like a Stratos, 037 or S4 because it's the time when Group B was "alive". But i decided to build my own car - Audi Quattro Rally A2 ... :-)
this is the most beautiful car sound ever made.
My fav car in the whole wide world!!!!!!!!! That noise of the 5 cylinder engine is unbeliveable ! Wish group B was still going....
1985, I'm in my BMW 323i, In front of me the Audi Sport Quattro group B with Walter and Christian, they are entering special stage, they are reviewing pace notes, I am behind the Quattro on the limit and suddenly Walter opens the throttle, it was like an explosion and I just hit the brakes, I just saw him disappear in a roar out of this world. Will never forget this until the day I die...
Finally after a long wait a good petrolicious movie. Finally the filmer understood that the sound of the car is important instead of music. And ofcourse the whole car should be seen (like in this movie) instead of just closeups.
Great car, one of the best soundig cars ever! It's so agressive, love it. Although the owner isn't driving it as fast as back in the glory days ;-)
Fvck, i just cried when Walter Röhrl said he got a deja-vu
Such an excellent video!!! It must be glorious to meet a personal hero, who then helps you build your dreamcar, which leads to meeting more heroes. Excellent!!!!
This is a super video. I lust after this car. The owners enthusiasm is intoxicating. I just wish Petrolicious would get under the hood a little more...some stats..interesting facts and close ups..and as much cracking and popping as the engine can muster😉
Ein geiles auto, mein Traum und wird er immer bleiben.
Top
It's amazing how the sound of an engine can interpret any language.
video is too short. we need another hour of the car!
Did not understand a word he said, but I have the same enthusiasm as the owner for the car. Always loved watching these Group B Audi cars and their distinctive 5 cylinder sound. Damn were they fast....
turn on closed caption
I don't even speak German but I can watch this all day!!
Wow.

I have no interest in rallying or in boxy Audis but I was enchanted by this video. Herr Gehrt's joy is contagious and his pride in the building of this impressive replica (which you can apparently rent for publicity events!) is completely understandable. Another sympathetic and beautiful video from Petrolicious. With no distracting music, purists!
