Rypdal is a great guitarist in many different ways. Here he's really evoking the Ventures-type sound he had waaaay early in his career; of all the footage I've seen of him where he's revisited his roots, this is by far the most spirited and fresh.
Someone sent me a really spotty audio recording of this gig (like someone had a dictation recorder in the audience or something) and I had no idea there was video and it sounds 10 times better. This is great!
If you don't get it, just move along. It's intentional. Part of the sonic pallete Rypdal employs to great affect. Like any other. Use whatever the hell each individual artist wants to achieve THEIR sound. Don't likey, changey channely- It's a matter of taste. Or not.....
Terje here is a tasteful "cool" player (Norway, hahaha), more playing, less show. My favorite part is from 10:49 to 20:06. That blows my mind away!!!!!! Thumbs UP, guys.
I like both players. They can both capture a texture and sound really well, giving their music a lot of pathos and atmosphere. Both seem to describe landscapes with their playing. Cinematic players. Neither are pure 'speed' players, and they aren't total pedal hounds either, using stacked delays and reverbs to make a big bad wash of sound.
Baily's probably respected /admired/ loved, whatever by someone, but for whatever reason he just didn't hold it up here. A few dozen bassists I could list woulda done Much cleaner work with less stumbles & screwups & trips than this poor guy here tonight. Maybe it was a bad day he just waded through, who knows. He was way off the program for some reason, playing on the weak or sloppy side. Étienne M'Bappé would be the ultimate pick of course, but Dave Holland or Neon or Clarke or Peacock or McBride or Haden or . . . . . - Rypdal deserves someone who can meet him in outer space where he frequently travels. A fitting complement to his unique style would only be just. OTHERwise, . . . . . what a rare appearance combination with tippity-top talent like Rypdal & Cobham. wowee.
Thank you Eddie
Terje's records on ECM in the years 70, 80 were incredible Thank you Eddy!!!

Welcome on festival with Terje Rypdal and other ECM-Style Grandees facebook.com/events/512460446220458/
Terje's concept has a lot in common with Bill Frisell's.
