He must be ignorant because he claims to be sad that climate change wasn't in the debates but yet the policy difference between Clinton and Trump on climate change is worlds apart.
I wouldn't say he is ignorant. Climate change wasn't a question in the debates. Yes, their are worlds of difference between Trump and Clinton on the issue, but he is entitled to vote for he wishes. Jill Stein, much as I think she has serious flaws - especially her embrace of antisemitic movements and unrealistic foreign policy, is still a legitimate choice in the elections.
I want to like this comment, but Stephen is an ass and a buffoon, especially when it comes to anything political. Viggo, on the other hand, fantastic, a total badass.
America should get used to voting for 3rd party candidates. The two party system can be easily corrupted. The more the options of candidates the harder to corrupt all of them. Even if not this time, just an increasing trend towards different candidates can be wake up call for the establishment.
***** Well its pretty sad that you can't see the corruption in the two parties that you have right now. If you haven't noticed that in spite of it being conspicuous, I am afraid I don't want to get in that argument. But my claim, and this can just be inferred by logical reasoning, was that comparatively it is easier to corrupt 2 parties that have a shot at winning than 3 or more.
Though on many economic issues there is nothing wrong with Jill Stein and her New Green Deal. But her entire stance on Russia and China is scary as fuck. And if we look at the world today, electing Jill Stein would've made a much worse president than Trump. Also it's probably thanks to her that Hillary didn't get elected. When we look into her relations with Russia, it's not to crazy to think that she did and said exactly what Russia wanted. Get Trump elected... When asked whether she agreed with Ajamu Baraka's description of NATO as "gangster states", Stein answered that she would not use Baraka's language but that "he means the same thing I'm saying". Yes the gangster states like Estonia, Denmark, Norway and Luxemburg... The happiest, richest countries with the best social security in the world... Oh the misery Stein has argued that the United States "helped foment" a coup in Ukraine, maintaining that Ukraine should be neutral and that the United States should not arm it.[132] She was critical of the Ukrainian government formed after the Revolution of Dignity, saying that "ultra-nationalists and ex-Nazis came to power."[135] She met with President Vladimir Putin in Moscow in December 2015 at a banquet to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Russian state television network RT. While in Russia, Stein criticized U.S. foreign policy. Stein does not think the U.S should become involved in territorial disputes in the South China Sea.[132] Immediately after the UK voted to leave the European Union in June 2016, Stein posted a celebratory statement on her website, saying the vote was "a victory for those who believe in the right of self-determination and who reject the pro-corporate, austerity policies of the political elites in the EU ... [and] a rejection of the European political elite and their contempt for ordinary people." After the death of Cuban former communist leader Fidel Castro, Stein tweeted that "Fidel Castro was a symbol of the struggle for justice in the shadow of empire." Asked by The Washington Post whether she agreed with Ajamu Baraka's characterization of President Obama as an "Uncle Tom", Stein replied that it would be better to ask Baraka about his choice of words, but added that he "was speaking to a demographic that feels pretty locked out of the American power structure." Jill Stein is a wolf in sheep's clothing.
Fun facts about Viggo in LOTR. He actually kicked a real iron helmet and broke some of his toes, AND he deflected a real blade thrown AT HIS FACE with a badass sword swing.
IIRC, they shot that scene before they shot all the running sequences when Aragorn and co. were tracking down the Uruk party that took Merry and Pippin, so it was Aragorn with broken toes, Legolas with a cracked rib, and Gimli's stunt double with a dislocated knee.
When does it ever end? You end up using that excuse every election , and all you get is some type of evil anyway. To get better, you must demand better. Don't tell me "you can fight another day", fight what ? A Hilary Clinton who's president and has even less reason to listen to us? Please.
If all the people who said they liked what Ron Paul stood for - but did not vote for him because 'he could never win' had gotten off their elephants and donkeys and actually voted for the guy, we would have had a president with INTEGRITY. A President who conducted himself under the rules and limitations of the Constitution, instead of grabbing increasing amounts of power... a President who believed that EVERYONE is EQUAL under the law... a President who would not bow to the rich, the powerful, or corporations... a President who would have relied on diplomacy, not aggression toward other nations... If only I could move to the parallel universe where Ron Paul won the election, and Firefly was not cancelled.
+darknightoftroy really? do you share Hillary's values? you don't give a fuck about NDAPL, supporting Saudi Arabia, killing civilians, increasing inequality, worsening social mobility, promoting fracking, rigging elections? selling your own values for money generally speaking (if Hillary has had values at some point...)?
+darknightoftroy of course they are related. When you vote for someone, you are giving them the right to represent you, so they should share in some way your own values, unless you were using the lesser of two evils arguments, which you are not (I would've considered utter bs if that had been the case). LoL have you checked any news about the dakota access pipeline? the only democrat has said something about that is Bernie, so it is fair to think they don't give a shit about that. Do you only get your news from cnn? have you ever looked at the emails from wikileaks? they have proven that none of the things were thought about hillary were wrong or any kind of conspiracy theory, she is a corrupt insider who only favors corporations and big donors (to her campaign or foundation). On top of that, you didn't need wikileaks for knowing about drone strikes are killing civilians 90% of the time, that inequality has rised, social mobility has decreased and salaries are no longer tied with productivity. I wonder why is that, maybe because of politician like hillary and obama has been in the side of big corporation? but just maybe... There are countless examples of her flip-flopping. A classic one is that she was for single payer when she was running against obama and changed her postition after she got money from the health industry. It is sad how people try to defend her without any argument. Are you gonna tell me that you haven't seen any of the wikileaks emails because of Russia? ha ha ha...
Much respect to Viggo I wish there were more celebrities. Who were truly informed on the issues and not hung up. On following the crowd and supporting the popular choice. Among the Hollywood elite and fake liberals class. On Tuesday I'll be casting my vote for Jill Stein and proudly!

42 other people read this comment and were like, Yeeup. the system is rigged. Anyone who says her name gets shut down. *then the people observe that that is not the case and insist on still believing in it whilst mocking the credibility of said observation. **then benny comes along and lends even more evidence to support the idea that jill stein was only mentioned because of ulterior motives by colbert. ***the amount of skepticism in a first world country is baffling. why don't you just write a letter to your senators instead of writing to youtube comments. ****are we all just attention whores?
Bojack Horseman You mean to write to our D and R senators? They are so up for electoral reform ... wait a minute... I still hear Obama '08: *...campaign finance reform...* Those were the days... If they couldn't even fix campaign finances why do you think those in power would have any interest in giving 3rd parties a say in politics?
No More 2 Party System donald trump's tax plan cuts taxes for the working poor by 4.5% while cutting taxes for millionaires by close to 15%. take 15k dollars and put it through his tax proposal- a poor person saves less than $800 while a millionaire saves over $2000. his plan dis-incentivizes charitable giving. his plan is predicted to add 5 trillion to the national debt which unless there's 25 million jobs added to the economy in 10 years will demand large cuts to programs. experts say his economic plan will destroy 5 million jobs. for perspective going back to Calvin Coolidge bill Clinton is the only president to add over 20 million. I absolutely agree we need more political diversity. At the same time- Donald Trump is dangerous for this country. we can't let him be president.
Having a multi party system means that people have more choice. Canada certainly benefits from it. Yes there are two dominant parties, but there are also two other parties who constantly hound the party in power to follow up on their campaign promises.Oh, the nagging!
I don't want to vote for trump or hillary. Trump for obvious reasons and Hillary since her VP doesn't understand like most citizens here, that separation of church and state is a law and not just a suggestion. And what Aragon said, both of them(red/blue) don't want to cut back on military spending or address issues like the audit on the pentagon.
It's first past the post still, so it's more a product of chance as well as geographic identity that there are multiple parties. I see a small chance the Republican party could split after the election, but it would always hurt them so I don't know. The most un-kooky Green party I've seen is the one in Germany, because they have proportional representation. Unfortunately in the current system you get Jill Stein pandering to anti-vaxxers because it's so hard to get votes.
escalinci The Canadian Green party wants us to revamp how things are done election wise. Because they have ONE seat in government they can get their views heard. A first step. It may take years for a shift, but at least there is already some discussion. The Green party has a bit more respect up here, I think. They are acknowledged as a real party. So we have the Liberals, the Conservatives, the New Democrats and the Green party. The trick is who ever has the slightest majority has the prime minister post. But to get legislation passed the ruling party has to negotiate with other parties. So there has to be a lot of bipartisan work done in Parliament. It's just something that's accepted here. The Republican idea of obfuscating and wrecking all legislation that would benefit the American people, just to hurt Obama, would get very short shrift up here. We can get really cranky if our members don't do their jobs.
Sandra Nelson Same in the UK, one MP. I'm sure somewhere like Portland in the US could get a green congressman, and they have a few independents. Congress approval is through the floor, but people tend to like their local appointee, funnily enough.
Proportional Representation is totally great! :D As a Belgian citizen, I can vote green, and do. So that's an awesome cause to fight for. However I gotta say, in the current US system, it's irresponsible to vote green in any non-solidly blue state.
I don't understand why it's such a big deal to voter for a third party candidate when both Republican and Democrat nominees are bad. If Viggo dislikes Clinton and Trump equally, why should he vote for either of them? He has a right to vote for anyone he wants to.
Here's an example. When one of those candidates wins, the Paris agreement gets shredded, and ecological progress loses 15 years which drags us back into the fucking caves. When the other wins, we don't do enough to fight climate change. See, as a rational person, I'd rather do what is needed, but given the choices I'd rather not do enough than go back into the fucking caves. Do you understand this elaborate idea?
Anton Tati I don't think anyone's opposed to it in general, it's just that his really isn't the election to be doing it. There's a real chance raving lunatic like Donald Trump could win, and voting third party (if you don't lean far-right) is just helping him.
In general? No not a big deal, but in this election in particular? If you're not voting for Clinton you're just helping Trump. He has a fanatical support base where Clinton doesn't, so his entire strategy at this point is to suppress voter turnout for Clinton as much as legally (and perhaps extra-legally) possible. Look at it this way. There aren't a statistically significant number of undecided Trump voters: you either see him as completely incompetent and unfit for office or you don't in which case you're probably voting for him. But there is a statistically significant number of people who haven't made up their mind about voting for Clinton. But to answer your question, it's such a big deal because it's exactly the same as a refusal to vote. And when the consequence of refusing to vote is possible having 4 years of Donald Trump which will range from being not bad but not good to potentially cataclysmic.
this is one of my favourite colbert interviews, mortensen is a genuinely delightful kind soul and colbert geeking out about lotr was such a plus, it is wonderful to see people excited about things in such an open child like way.
OMG I didn't know Viggo Mortensen is this sharp!! He is definitively holding himself to a higher standard than most people during this election. Of course you shouldn't vote for Trump or Clinton if you don't like their policies and Dr Jill Stein is a very good choice indeed!!
Bernhardina Hörnstein Unfortunately, voting for Stein or Johnson is a waisted vote because every believes that it is a wasted vote. It will take a few more elections for the American people to truly believe that they can make a change.
AGolstonT The electoral college makes all votes wasted votes, noone that votes with their morals and conscious wastes a vote, infact a more correct description of a wasted vote is voting against your states electoral lean.
+RC360 The Electoral College falls into the "American people" that I speak of. Civilian voters and electoral college voters alike need to wake up and realize that we have the power. Education and unity is the key.
His point was that he doesn't feel comfortable voting for either major party candidate. He doesn't want to choose between bad and worse. There are other candidates out there, and he's found one he is comfortable voting for.
Finally someone with some sense. I never understood why people could only vote Democrat or Republican. And now especially it doesn't sound like a good idea to vote either one. I don't get why Stephen has a problem with Viggo voting for a third party.
As someone who voted for Bernie, I totally respect Viggo's decision to vote for Jill. If any of the past Republican nominees were running this time (Romney. McCain.), I'd be comfortable voting for Jill. However, Trump scares the living crap out of me. As worst-case scenarios go, that's pretty freakin bad. It just isn't worth the risk for me.
Lindsay Mead As someone who has supported Bernie. I can never support a Clinton presidency as it will only set a precedent that honest candidates can be brushed aside just like that by money and corruption. Also, all the Clinton leaks and her corruption in the past to the pathetic foreign policy endorsed now and practiced in the past just cannot be pushed aside anymore. Why even take part in this facade?
Weeb Lord Well, I won't get into a pointless debate here. But imo, Trump is way worse. Not just as a human being, but his policies are not in line with anything that I want to see in this country. I'd rather we take a tentative step forward with Hillary than a giant leap backwards with Trump.
Why is voting for someone whose policies align with your priorities considered "throwing your vote away"? I mean, think about it: isn't voting for someone just to spite another candidate more of a throwaway vote?
It was a similar situation in Canada last year for the federal election. Many people weren't actually wanting to vote liberal, they were voting against the conservatives and Stephen Harper.
+darell johnson lol, considering the options we did okay. Quality of living in Canada is better than you brainwashed Americans. You had a chance to better your lives drastically with Bernie, instead you have a fascist and war hawk to chose from. Your republic is going to be destroyed from the inside. Enjoy 4 years of trump, it'll be the last four years before you're thrown into a depression.
Because 'Merica, fuck yeah. My recommendation as an outsider is: get rid of electoral collage and introduce two-stage election (in second stage two top candidates from previous run).
According to a recent Reuters poll which asked "what is your primary reason for supporting your preferred candidate" , more than 50% of Trump supporters and more than 50% of Clinton supporters indicated that their primary reason was opposing the other leading candidate, rather than anything of merit about their own intended candidate. If all these 'lesser evil' supporters voted for Stein instead, she'd win by a landslide, but instead they are panicked and corralled into voting for someone they don't actually like. It's madness.
*he's a sjw liberal nut* LOL no, he's a centre right pro oil pro business chameleon who spends more time doing photo ops than following through on campaign promises. If you're an American though you're probably severely handicapped in understanding anything about the left as our version of a centre right is considered a radical lefty in America apparently.
Rolling Ormond Not my fault. The DNC got what they deserved. You can bitch and moan all you want, but it would have never happened if they nominated Bernie Sanders.
The Eastern Promises fight scene is the best ever, specifically, because he did it nude. It made it more raw and, ultimately, more grandiose. It's a great movie, check it out.
BoothTheGrey actually, considering it's a winner takes all system, your best interest is the person who agrees with you the most while having an actual chance of winning. This years third party candidates have no chance of winning. Voting for them is voting against your best interest.
PretentiousRed But you DONT check what candidate agrees with you "most" - you check what candidate you agree LESSER with. Because with the both "big" candidates all normal people agree in such little parts. The word "most" is absolutely inaccurate. If you take one drop water or one drop tea... and think about what drop will help you not getting thursty in the next 4 years... I would rather choose NONE drop and ask for the many, many bottles over there you could reach if all the people who wants those bottles would work together. To choose a drop is just another word for insanity. To say none drop is better than one drop... is just pure blindness.
John Bantha we've got to break free of this corporate monopoly eventually and when the alternative is a loudmouthed obnoxious buffoon with no political ability there has been no better time to vote with your concience :)
Tell you what John. Actually watch a long interview with her or the "debate" when she answered questions that were posed to the other 2 candidates. You watch that and tell me she doesn't have much better policy on top of being more intelligent than the other two. The only thing I don't like about her is she'll use cheesy lines like misleaders *cringe* but her policies are fantastic. Oversimplifying nuanced subjects she has a good grasp on while literally editing her responses MID SENTENCE for soundbites to make her sound stupid is all every major network has done since they realized hillary was hated.
Trump makes me sick but not as much as actors and actresses saying "you MUST vote Hilary". Viggo's a real man. If you can't vote for either of them with a clear conscience, don't.
The interesting thing about Viggo Mortensen is, he had never heard of The Lord of the Rings and was brought in last minute because the first guy they hired just wasn't up to the job. Viggo got the call and was going to turn it down until one of his kids, who had read the book, told him he had to do it. And then Viggo got so into character he'd actually dress as Aragorn all the time and wanted to keep the sword. He was absolutely dedicated to the character and to his craft, and I love that. I always hate it when actors are embarrassed about the roles they play.
Ok I actually tried to figure out what you're talking about before posting this reply. Her official stances from her website are that she wants to: "Enforce the Bill of Rights by protecting the right to free speech and protest", "End persecution of government, corporate and media whistleblowers", and "Issue an Executive Order prohibiting Federal agencies from conspiring with local police to infringe upon right of assembly and peaceful protest." Googling "Jill Stein free speech" returns nothing, so do you have an example of where she has gone against this?
I'm voting for the candidate in the election championing Ranked Choice Voting. Because we gotta fix that issue before we're stuck with another pair of crappy major party candidates.
I just got back from seeing Jill Stein in Philly. She is AMAZING! Jill is the only candidate that's earned my vote. A vote for Jill is an investment for our future. 🌎💚Jill Stein 2016💚🌏
Well there's always a rehearsal. In a way, there's almost everytime everything scripted, in every single talk show. Fun fact: Talk Shows's don't even make a secret out of it. But that he has a cellphone instead of a smartphone, that's e.g. a true thing. The show around it, obviously is for entertaining. :D
I don't know about that. Usually Stephen doesn't try that hard to conceal when a bit has been pre-rehearsed but he looked genuinely surprised when there was actually someone on the cellphone. Not saying it wasn't scripted but I don't think Stephen knew about it. Viggo probably got a producer backstage to call the phone without telling Stephen that he was going to.
To be honest, I am on the blink of flipping out and buying out of those flip phones... there is something about smartphones that is just no good for us in the end (comparing the good things and the bad things) and this enhance my theory that people that dont use smartphone have some kind of different vibe, almost like a relief.
I wish this man could've been my father growing up; alternatively, I wish he could be my husband. He actually talks SENSE, that is so rare these days; he is so intelligent, so talented, and seems to be a spiritual person as well. How can you not be drawn to him? Please God let there be more people like Viggo Mortensen!!!
I have enormous respect for Viggo, but don't vote third party. Spoiler Effect is a thing if you like it or not. Instead, go and protest the system that enables it. Campaign and petition for electoral reform. Make it clear to the powers that be that this issue is not going anywhere.
Sgt. Peppermint: How about voting for Jill? That'd be a good start. If she wouldn't run for the presidency, she would be completely ignored, and no electoral reform would take place at all.
there is NO spoiler effect. a) many people voting third party would not vote otherwise b) gary Johnson is taking at least as much support from traditional republican voters c) If Clinton wants the votes of Jill Stein supporters she should actually make an effort to reach out to them. She needs to earn votes, not assume she'll get them because she's only the second most disliked candidate in history
Cem Dursun Always vote while conscious. Don't black out in the voting booth. The lines are already long and they probably wouldn't check in on you for a good while.
Ad C OK, you're correct on a). If you're not going to vote otherwise, go ahead and vote third party. b) is a problem though - if you would prefer HRC over Trump, at all, you're not doing yourself any favours by relying on a right wing Lib voter to cancel you out. c) has some merit - your political parties have changed in the past - but there will never be more than two viable/likely options at a time without electoral reform. I can accept voting third party - but only if the main options, one of whom will be elected, really are 100% equally unpalatable.
Fortunately, I once was close to a friend who had (and I sincerely hope still has) a worldview and disposition very similar to Viggo Mortensen the person, not the characters he so convincingly portrays. Unfortunately, I've lost touch with my friend because of repeated increases in geographic distance and diverging careers as well as a host of other changes that have taken place over time. I really should reconnect with him for yet another rare dose of keeping company with a person of calm intelligent wisdom and an utter lack of pretense. This video clip and every other one I've watched featuring Viggo Mortensen being interviewed always have made me feel this way and it's about time I act before my all too short life comes to an end. Thanks, Stephen Colbert, for reminding me of a dear and kind friend I once knew well, especially after the incessant sensibilities beating of this soon to end all too drawn out presidential election season.
Derek Diercksmeier Thanks, Derek. True deep friendships are rare relationships that should be honored and fostered with loyalty and compassion for a lifetime, don't' you think?
I like Vigo he voices his opinions. He doesn't shout them simply voices them. He made some jokes kind of pointing a little at everyone which I thought was funny and fair. On top of that he doesn't judge anyone based on their opinions. He simply moves on in a polite fashion. Be like Vigo. Respect.
Mr. Mortensen lives primarily in Madrid. That, and the insulation that money affords allow him the luxury of "voting his conscience" with impunity. The rest of us, here on the ground in the U.S., will have to deal with a Trump presidency should the unthinkable occur.
I have no argument with shafting Hillary. The real task is how to do it without shafting yourself. Have you seen Michael Moore's TrumpLand? I was an enthusiastic Bernie supporter. Then I put on my big boy pants.
Bete Noire Just know that by putting on your big boy pants you're also supporting the candidate most liked by Wall Street and the military industrial complex. Just be aware.
Mad Hatman The Greens are polling between 1% and 2% and falling. There is no chance that they'll reach 5% this time around. You talk about the election as if you're observing from Mars. It's not a question of whether the Dems deserve to win. They don't. It's a matter of millions losing their recently acquired medical coverage, the increased militarization of the police, the breakup of NATO, etc., etc. These are scenarios that won't punish the DNC. They'll punish you and those you care about. You will not be a spectator at the Trump debacle...you'll be one of its victims, along with most of your countrymen.
ChillChannel - It's funny, the other side says a vote for a 3rd party candidate is a vote for Trump... Hmm. If everyone who truly dislikes both Hillary AND Trump voted for a 3rd party candidate (and not just for the BS "lesser of two evils" excuse), maybe the crooked 2 party system could be changed up. Wouldn't that be a novel idea...?
How is a vote for a third-party a vote againt Clinton? Third-party voters will come from both side, not only the Democratics. Gary Johnson's policies are much closer to the Republican Party as well, so should get more republican votes than democrats, while Stein gets all the socialists and eco-friendly from the Democratic side. Johnson has way more voters, and should technically have snatched way more republicans than democrats based on policies.
Thank you, Viggo, for being brave and voting Green. I'm so sick of celebrities talking about being environmental but don't have the courage to speak out for the environmental party.
I take my hat off to people like this. I've also always voted my conscience even though I knew I'd never win. People who don't vote for Jill Stein will regret it.
Viggo Mortensen and Keanu Reeves are always themselves - even in interviews. Other actors usually try to show themselves in the best way possible - even if that meant to pretend to be someone else. Not these two. And that´s why I really admire them.
My favorite, favorite character from LOTR; moreover he's never, ever done a bad job, no matter what role he played. This is the first interview I have seen, and he seems to be a very humble, normal individual....Thanks for uploading.
I remember meeting him at our mutual alma mater around the time Two Towers came out. Came there and did various things...poetry readings, autograph signings. Met him, got an autograph. Very nice guy, tremendous actor. LOTR are my favorite movies of all time. Especially Fellowship.
Viggo is just the perfect marriage of a gentleman and an hidalgo, I'd even say an icon or canon for the educated cosmopolitan leftist. Such a voice such be heard more often.
This man is special. He has an elegance about him that i've never been able to ignore. I love Viggo.
Seeing him now just reminds me that Fellowship of the Ring came out 16 years ago. He's always been a very composed character though, guy never seems to want to be in the limelight
I bet he only came on the show to get Stephen to stop calling him every day ;)
16 years ago???? WOW!! So I was like 9 back then. Crazy. Time flies.
He runs parallel to Daniel Day-Lewis in that.
When I seen him as a kid on lotr I was hooked since.. Wish they brought that franchise back with him as the lead!! He's the goat!!
I honestly believe that Viggo is the real-life, modern-day representation of what Aragorn would be: off the grid, not modern, very humble and brilliant. Viggo Mortensen's calm demeanor is something to watch.
Jill Stein was just endorsed by the King of Gondor.
Gondor has no king! Gondor needs no king!
Authority is not given you to deny the return of the King.
Yes, chad, someone who doesn't think like to must be ignorant. Brilliant.
I literally said out loud, "If it's a flip phone I will love you forever."
Then I fainted, no idea what happened after that.
Kaydiasez 😂😂😂
Why does the King of Gondor need to vote?
Joaq Wizard Phoenix it's because this vote is a vote for middle earth
Because the United States of America is, sadly, not part of the Kingdom of Gondor.
Nathaniel Nogales if only it was.
thank God United Shithole of America is not part of Gondor.
Joaq Wizard Phoenix good point!!
How about we all vote to dive back into a monarchy starting with Vigo. We'll all call him king Elessar, of course.
Shane Alexander only if he will appoint Jon Stewart as Court Bard.
The entire 1% have lobbied themselves the trappings of a monarchy 10 times over. Nobody needs any more kings and queens by proxy.
You're not being very fun, Phil. I'm just enjoying myself for a moment as a massive Tolkien and Vigo fan.
Sorry. I don't get paid to be funny.
You'd go hungry if you did.
"There's actually a guy on the phone, I thought you were bull shitting me."
LMAO
Goat moment
So, how long before Stephen starts referencing The Lord of the Rin-okay, one minute.
Azmar I am impressed by Colbert’s restraint.
Aragorn knows what is right for both Middle-Earth and America!
Mario Franco But he's decided to stand down and allow Sauron to grow in power. Stupid as fuck, not heroic.
But the alternative is Saruman.
ROOKTABULA you grow up. He's voting for who he believes in. End of story.
Maddie Siegmund more like Thorin Oakenshield
Middle Earth is a good land. America is not.
Viggo is the most real and pure person in Hollywood and Stephen is just a superb interviewer in the way he dealt with him.
I want to like this comment, but Stephen is an ass and a buffoon, especially when it comes to anything political.
Viggo, on the other hand, fantastic, a total badass.
Viggo sounds like such a great guy
Andrei Simionescu yeah, he knew Stephen's a huge lotr fan so he sent him a box of lotr characters carved in chocolate. so nice of him.
not like, he is
Good solid personality and very articulated, down-to-earth kind of guy.
You should hear his toe-breaking scream, I hear it's hot. xD
America should get used to voting for 3rd party candidates. The two party system can be easily corrupted. The more the options of candidates the harder to corrupt all of them. Even if not this time, just an increasing trend towards different candidates can be wake up call for the establishment.
Jill Stein has accepted $0 from corporations
Sritanshu Sinha
We can't continue to pigeon hole ourselves into a two party system or this shit happens.
Sritanshu Sinha It is so easy, look at the Libertarians. They took corporate money and their candidate, Gary Johnson, supported the TPP.
Oh the misery
Stein has argued that the United States "helped foment" a coup in Ukraine, maintaining that Ukraine should be neutral and that the United States should not arm it.[132] She was critical of the Ukrainian government formed after the Revolution of Dignity, saying that "ultra-nationalists and ex-Nazis came to power."[135] She met with President Vladimir Putin in Moscow in December 2015 at a banquet to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Russian state television network RT. While in Russia, Stein criticized U.S. foreign policy.
Stein does not think the U.S should become involved in territorial disputes in the South China Sea.[132]

[and] a rejection of the European political elite and their contempt for ordinary people."
After the death of Cuban former communist leader Fidel Castro, Stein tweeted that "Fidel Castro was a symbol of the struggle for justice in the shadow of empire."
Asked by The Washington Post whether she agreed with Ajamu Baraka's characterization of President Obama as an "Uncle Tom", Stein replied that it would be better to ask Baraka about his choice of words, but added that he "was speaking to a demographic that feels pretty locked out of the American power structure."
Jill Stein is a wolf in sheep's clothing.
The way Viggo admits how good Aragorn was for him is a testament to his humility.
Awesome!!!
Fun facts about Viggo in LOTR. He actually kicked a real iron helmet and broke some of his toes, AND he deflected a real blade thrown AT HIS FACE with a badass sword swing.
And he came back to work after that...
IIRC, they shot that scene before they shot all the running sequences when Aragorn and co. were tracking down the Uruk party that took Merry and Pippin, so it was Aragorn with broken toes, Legolas with a cracked rib, and Gimli's stunt double with a dislocated knee.
Yeah that deflect was badass
That real sowrd part is a lie
@@ridwanahmed9710 nope it’s made from real steel
He is right, vote for those you believe in. Not because one is lesser evil. If you will vote always for lesser evil the cycle wont end.
The two party system will persist until we get rid of our first past the post voting system. Which will never happen.
Are you gonna tell me that you haven't seen any of the wikileaks emails because of Russia? ha ha ha...
I liked this guy a lot before, now I like him even more!
***** Because he has some common sense.
I could not, would not, on a boat. I will not, will not, with a goat!
Trump supporter? Big mouth, all talk.....no brain or spine. Get upstairs, your mother is making you hot pockets.
probably the best celebrity on the planet
Much respect to Viggo I wish there were more celebrities. Who were truly informed on the issues and not hung up. On following the crowd and supporting the popular choice. Among the Hollywood elite and fake liberals class. On Tuesday I'll be casting my vote for Jill Stein and proudly!
Patrick Small Likewise. Today is the day!
KyleBuschPackFan Yes indeed time to get out and vote!

Wait, wait, wait. One of the big media outlets actually allowed Jill Stein's name to be said on air? And let her be talked about???
waveman99 it only happened because Stephen loves LotR

I still hear Obama '08: *...campaign finance reform...*
Those were the days...
If they couldn't even fix campaign finances why do you think those in power would have any interest in giving 3rd parties a say in politics?
Benny Frank the 3rd the SCOTUS under GOP control made the decision on Citizen's United, not Obama.
Obama won taking money from big corporations. As soon as he did that, that reform was dead.

Nellie K. Adaba Right on. I hope you check out our work at No More 2 Party System
If you want to fix it then allow IRV and don't feed into the Spoiler Effect.
Having a multi party system means that people have more choice. Canada certainly benefits from it. Yes there are two dominant parties, but there are also two other parties who constantly hound the party in power to follow up on their campaign promises.Oh, the nagging!
I don't want to vote for trump or hillary.
Trump for obvious reasons and
Hillary since her VP doesn't understand like most citizens here, that separation of church and state is a law and not just a suggestion.
As a Belgian citizen, I can vote green, and do. So that's an awesome cause to fight for.
However I gotta say, in the current US system, it's irresponsible to vote green in any non-solidly blue state.
The man the myth the legend. Aragorn himself. The guy that defected a piece of metal with a prop.
Good on you, Mr. Mortensen, for voting for your conscience and your principles. I don't think I've respected that man more than I do now.
I don't understand why it's such a big deal to voter for a third party candidate when both Republican and Democrat nominees are bad. If Viggo dislikes Clinton and Trump equally, why should he vote for either of them? He has a right to vote for anyone he wants to.
Anton Tati And we have a right to criticize him out for it.
Both bad, but not equally so. By all means vote third party and/or your conscience though.
Weak audience. I thought Viggo was hilarious
I think they didn't really understand that he was having fun with everything.
He is...I was lol till I nearly fell of the bed
Stephen Colbert: Like living with the ultimate fanboy ..
who enjoys 'sword practice'.
It's funny how Viggo kept slipping that in there and it went over Stephen's head each time lol
yes i was disappointed stephen didn't get it once
I used to really like Viggo before I heard about this. Now I adore him.
this is one of my favourite colbert interviews, mortensen is a genuinely delightful kind soul and colbert geeking out about lotr was such a plus, it is wonderful to see people excited about things in such an open child like way.
I use a flip phone. They're cheap, makes calls, sends texts and, best of all, don't explode.
He's such a quiet, curious man. How lovely
Jill might care about the environment, but she still asks you to throw your vote away
The respect for this man just went up 1000%
Finally someone with some sense. I never understood why people could only vote Democrat or Republican. And now especially it doesn't sound like a good idea to vote either one. I don't get why Stephen has a problem with Viggo voting for a third party.
Some Americans can call themselves progressive (liberal elites like COlbert) but they also fall into line and fail to embrace real change
*I had no idea he was a US citizen, for some reason I thought he was a from Norway or something.*
he is part danish
malthex larsen *My bad, I just checked.*

He is part american and part danish and has lived all over the place

John Bantha *Ah, thanks.*
*I really needed your opinion on that.*
*A bit ironic since you're doing the same thing, I assume for extra attention.*
Viggo is so chill and doesn't play any games. I have mad respect for him.
Thats because you're just another coward gullible enough to fall for the 2 party one liners.
88 MIKE Yup, and I totally care about the opinions of some generic internet troll. Smh.
You are doing the right thing. This election is not time to dick around. Vote for Stein / Johnson is just a mathematical probability for voting Trump.
I don't know this guy but now I'm a fan. He's fucking cool.
Gina you wanna tell me youve never seen the lord of the rings?
Why not just make her watch the movie instead of burying her alive? Jeez!
Gina you've really never seen the lord of the rings?
Go to his IMDB movie list and watch them all. Every movie where he is a lead is amazing haha
That's okay. I haven't seen Harry Potter.
*he's a sjw liberal nut*
LOL no, he's a centre right pro oil pro business chameleon who spends more time doing photo ops than following through on campaign promises.
If you're an American though you're probably severely handicapped in understanding anything about the left as our version of a centre right is considered a radical lefty in America apparently.

BaileysBeads it was lovely
What are you talking about? If they panicked they woudl of forced stephen to change topics quickly??
Well, the show isn't live. If they were panicking it wouldn't have aired in the first place or they would've done the whole interview again.
Stephen is the one who ASKED him about it. It was ON script.
Yeah, Middle Earth don't need trump or Hillary.
I love how Colbert started stuttering and became lost for words when Viggo suggested they practice sword fighting.
No one dares to clap when he says he's voting 3rd. The hesitation is so sad.. Sheeps
Getting Trump in on a throw-away vote is something no one wants. Makes sense.
Rolling Ormond Not really. I wasnt scared into comforming. I live in Virginia. Maybe the dems should have picked a better candidate (Sanders).
KyleBuschPackFan We'll try to appreciate that when Trump gets us nuked.
Rolling Ormond Not my fault. The DNC got what they deserved. You can bitch and moan all you want, but it would have never happened if they nominated Bernie Sanders.
Rolling Ormond Plus, Hillary won Virginia anyways, so stop complaining. Youre going to lose, and you deserved to.
Vigo, good on you for thinking critically)
finally someone who uses his intelligence and puts forward suitable candidate for president

The Eastern Promises fight scene is the best ever, specifically, because he did it nude. It made it more raw and, ultimately, more grandiose. It's a great movie, check it out.
7:47 all these people applauding, but then they will vote for Trump or Hillary...
What difference does it make? A vote for Stein, Johnson, McMullin, or any other third party candidate is a vote for Trump or Hillary.
he lives in California... not gonna make a difference
This only is accurate because millions of people think like this and vote AGAINST their own interests. Strange behaviour, isnt it?
BoothTheGrey actually, considering it's a winner takes all system, your best interest is the person who agrees with you the most while having an actual chance of winning. This years third party candidates have no chance of winning. Voting for them is voting against your best interest.
PretentiousRed
But you DONT check what candidate agrees with you "most" - you check what candidate you agree LESSER with.

Alex Gulino thankyou yes
I mean I like the idea of voting my concious and stuff. But if even Bernie couldn't do it.. and he had time and a huge voterbase.
I fell a little in love with Viggo when I saw him tell an interviewer he once threw his phone out the window.
I don't remember his name, but a Native American Chief once said, "Remember, the left and right wing are on the same bird".
Trump makes me sick but not as much as actors and actresses saying "you MUST vote Hilary".
Viggo's a real man. If you can't vote for either of them with a clear conscience, don't.
Viggo's level of chill is powerful. Love it.
viggo is such a cool guy, and also really good looking and with an awesome sense of humor. thank you, stephen, for uploading the interview.
I always hate it when actors are embarrassed about the roles they play.
omfg Colbert's face when Viggo utters the phrase "my friend Stephen"
You can come back anytime in cannes !! In france we dont blur a pic and we love freeman who act and speack freely from their heart
I'm voting for Jill Stein too.
Ok I actually tried to figure out what you're talking about before posting this reply. Her official stances from her website are that she wants to:
"Enforce the Bill of Rights by protecting the right to free speech and protest", "End persecution of government, corporate and media whistleblowers", and "Issue an Executive Order prohibiting Federal agencies from conspiring with local police to infringe upon right of assembly and peaceful protest."
Googling "Jill Stein free speech" returns nothing, so do you have an example of where she has gone against this?
Hm, she actually has her own page about it

Jimbo Mackay oh yea, I'm not disagreeing with you. I just didn't know she was riding that short bus
I'm voting for the candidate in the election championing Ranked Choice Voting. Because we gotta fix that issue before we're stuck with another pair of crappy major party candidates.
So... how did the vote work out for you? #TrumpisNotmyPresident
I just got back from seeing Jill Stein in Philly. She is AMAZING! Jill is the only candidate that's earned my vote. A vote for Jill is an investment for our future. 🌎💚Jill Stein 2016💚🌏

I don't really know why, but Stephen talking Tolkien is very sexy to me..
Renske Dunnewold I totally agree.
And it's like, the only times he's sexy, but, ohmygod. 😍
Totes
I like how Stephen baits him into talking about himself, boast, etc. at the beginning. Nope. He’s solid. A man of character
I can't tell where the scripted parts end
hint: they don't
Ohaye
Yea that's also a thing, partly scritped, with either the host or the guest knowing about it. :D
To be honest, I am on the blink of flipping out and buying out of those flip phones... there is something about smartphones that is just no good for us in the end (comparing the good things and the bad things)
and this enhance my theory that people that dont use smartphone have some kind of different vibe, almost like a relief.
Aragorn is such a *weirdo* in real life.
He's cooler than I imagined. Strange, but cool.
And fluent in several languages. He even has a different personality when speaking Spanish: he's a bit cheekier, but in a friendly way.
this inspires me to have a flip phone again:)I like this man:) few americans consider over spending in millitary an issue
No, always vote your conscious.
That was beautiful.
Derek Diercksmeier
Thanks, Derek. True deep friendships are rare relationships that should be honored and fostered with loyalty and compassion for a lifetime, don't' you think?
"We have your sword"
"...You have my sword?"
"IGOTHIMTOSAYIT!!!!!"
Respect.
What the hell was that intro music
Sounds cajun.
Mr. Mortensen lives primarily in Madrid. That, and the insulation that money affords allow him the luxury of "voting his conscience" with impunity. The rest of us, here on the ground in the U.S., will have to deal with a Trump presidency should the unthinkable occur.
I'm probably way poorer than you and I'm voting for Stein. Yes, in a SWING STATE. How d'ya like 'em apples?
Bete Noire I give my vote a lot of thought. I don't see a path to progressive change by voting for Hillary Clinton, so she gets the fucking shaft.
Mad Hatman
The Greens are polling between 1% and 2% and falling. You will not be a spectator at the Trump debacle...you'll be one of its victims, along with most of your countrymen.
well every vote for Jill or Garry is a vote against Hillary, so that is good
ChillChannel Or against Trump.
it's a triple vote! three times the voting power
ChillChannel Well, since he most likely lives in either NY or LA his vote doesn't matter anyway.
This guy is awesome!
One of my favorite actors...please welcome Aragorn son of Arathorn heir of Isildur
The best interview on this channel!
Thank God for Viggo! At least someone heads still attains their morals and still is sane in this wretched election.
Based fucking Viggo. A true artist.
Viggo Mortensen and Keanu Reeves are always themselves - even in interviews. Other actors usually try to show themselves in the best way possible - even if that meant to pretend to be someone else. Not these two. And that´s why I really admire them.
A flip phone has never looked more cool than in the hands of Viggo Mortensen
My favorite, favorite character from LOTR; moreover he's never, ever done a bad job, no matter what role he played. This is the first interview I have seen, and he seems to be a very humble, normal individual....Thanks for uploading.
Finally an actor who wasnt paid to promote Hillary, my hero Aragorn.
I remember meeting him at our mutual alma mater around the time Two Towers came out. Came there and did various things...poetry readings, autograph signings. Met him, got an autograph. Very nice guy, tremendous actor. LOTR are my favorite movies of all time. Especially Fellowship.
*He's last movie "Captain Fantastic" was really great, I loved it*.
He was so good in Eastern Promises, if Day-Lewis wasnt playing Daniel Plainview that year, Viggo would have won he Oscar
"i trust her as far as i could throw trump" lol i gotta use that
I'd pay money to see how far he could throw Trump.
You're just gonna hafta toss meh!!!
“can I live with you?”
meeeee😂
Meeeeeee
His full frontal scene in Captain Fantastic... I wonder if it involved prosthetics!
0:48 that moment where people cant quite recall Eastern Promises but clap anyway because why the hell not
"We lehft Russia for a bey-ter life."
Ololol I thought I was the only one who remembered
Why are people criticizing his choice? It's not like he's advocating people to vote the same as he would.
I know this isn't spoken of much but my favorite role of his is Master Chief in GI Jane.
Viggo is just the perfect marriage of a gentleman and an hidalgo, I'd even say an icon or canon for the educated cosmopolitan leftist. Such a voice such be heard more often.
