It's just like how they make things nowadays except you have to pay for a subscription to play the game and can only buy the new bulbs from the original manufactorer for a premium 😂
A lot of old devices and toys had spare parts inside of them because it was common for people to actually fix their things instead of buying a new one, sadly it's more cost effective and profitable for companies to make it so you can't repair it at all and have to buy a new one
1980 wasn't ancient America tho. There were plenty of really creative things that were well made during that time. Just before WWII, we were at our peak.
@@JuicemanGravy I'm comparing to what I know from my childhood in Poland - country influenced by soviet union. Plastic toys in the 80's were brittle, rough edges, mold marks, constantly breaking, made from whatever junk polymers were left after building bankrupting socialism.
I duno why you're surprised the mould was good for 1980, they put more craft into their products in 1980 than they do now. Mass consumerism was only just getting going.
I would have kill for a game like that, I remember a class mate had a similar one, analogic, no ligths, and I couldn't believe what I was seeing, it was like the future. 😄
It's good to remember past memories, reminding us that times have passed, and times will continue to change, those who can't keep up will be lost in the face of time.
Ah, this really takes me back! I had a game like that, but it was all about planes instead of cars, and it made a similar noise. By today’s standards, it’s a decent paperweight, but we thought it was the bee’s knees back then. Cheers for the stroll down memory lane, mate! Sending good vibes from Patagonia!
Remember having a similar game, this one had a hand-drawn track that would rotate on a spool instead of light up cars and the car you drove was a sticker on some clear plastic that you controlled
This toy brings back nostalgia when I was a child, I used to have a western bar game watch, submarine, space ship, helicopter ect. every Casio game watch
Omg this brought me back. I was 6 and had one of these. That exact same one. Also had some football one I could never figure out how to play, with little red dots that would light up.
Yes, that was a really nice touch. When I first opened the game, I thought the gear level might just be decorative with no function so it was a nice surprise to see that it actually changed the speed.
I remember seeing videos of the Tomy racing game that was images of cars on a film roll. It was simpler but offered no variability of the cars on the road. I suppose this is effectively an evolution of that game.
Ah yes, I think that’s Demon Driver that you are thinking of. There were two rolls of film with cars printed on them if I remember correctly. It was an earlier game - I think late 70s. My best friend had one - we played it for hours. You’ve triggered a memory now, I’ll have to go and find a broken one on eBay! 😂
Cool, my friend has one similar to that back then when we're kids, there are quite a few versions of that as far as i can remember, same concept but different designs.
Truly astonishing difference between this (what I grew up with wishing for something better) and the ps5 with gt7 that I have now. Still, it was moments of dull interest. 👍
I’ve never actually had any of the strands poke me but now I’m thinking I’ve just been lucky up until now 🤷🏻♂️ This might be one of those things I have to learn the hard way 😂
Great video! I didn’t have that game but still have a couple of similar ones that have stopped working. Will see if I can fix those using a similar method
Thank you! Definitely worth a try. In my experience, it is nearly always something simple and is often obvious as soon as you open the game up. It’s rare to find something completely unrepairable to be honest (at least from this era anyway!) Good luck!🤞
I had one that was basically the same thing, but it was huge. It had a steering wheel in enough that I could hold in my hands but it was small enough I could play with it on my lap when I was like 4.
Yes, it’s just a polish with a very fine abrasive in it. Polish on, polish off 👍 For deep scratches, it may need to be sanded first - have a watch of my video restoring the Grandstand Scramble game. I restored the black plastic case to a gloss finish using about 12 stages of abrasive pad and then polish…
@@DistinctlyAverageRepairs Just type, "Stick Shifters" . They have plenty of the original commercials here. It's a bit older than I thought though. Guess I was about 10 when they came out. 😂
I’ve just had a look - I don’t remember those at all, I wonder if they were actually released here in the UK? They remind me of the Evel Knievel stunt cycle.
@@DistinctlyAverageRepairs I think they came out around the same time being they worked on the same principle. I remember the stunt cycle as well. The large wheel toys came out about that time. I can't remember the name of the one where you pulled a long plastic wire out to turn the wheel but I remember having one of those as well back then. Update: Zipcord cars
@DaNinja60 I think I know the type you mean - I had a car with a long plastic pull cord thing that had notches on one side which engaged to spin a big wheel and then you dropped it on the floor and it shot off into the nearest piece of furniture or a wall! 😂
I was born in 2005 so i never grew up with toys from the 80's or early 90's, but this toy reminds me of the Simon game which came out around the same time as this. The simon game also uses light bulbs. Now everything uses L.E.Ds lol. One thing i find interesting is that there are these Halloween animatronic items that are called "Motionettes" the ones I'm talking about came out in 1988. They make a spooky generic sound that everyone who grew up in the late 1980's - late 1990's has heard lol. They use L.E.Ds for the eyes, but a an actual light bulb is used for a skull or pumpkin that is on one of the hands. I like how in old stuff like that you could actually replace the light bulbs (Not L.E.Ds) without soldering.
Thanks for your comment. I actually repaired an old Simon game in this video - ruclips.net/video/J2mUmHnIDmE/видео.html - it’s the pocket version but the technology is basically the same. Older stuff is definitely easier to repair, the circuit board on something like this game compared to, say, a Nintendo Switch are poles apart! Not to say you can’t work on newer stuff, it just takes a lot more concentration! 😀
Not to discredit your frankly amazing work, but I'm curious: if the ultimate problem was a single bent piece of metal, could this have been fixed by simply smacking it a few times, without any disassembly?
Technically, I could have just disassembled the little jack plug socket and bent the piece of metal without taking everything apart but I wanted to retrobright the case to restore some of the colour. Also, I didn’t actually realise it was just this piece of metal causing the problem until the game was in bits. What can I say, I like taking things to pieces 😂
This is so fun to watch. My lifetime question is "how do people get to learn how to do this stuff". I mean did your father teach you, or you work somewhere related, etc.
I am completely self-taught. I have always liked taking things to pieces to see how they worked and over time, I learned to put them back together again too. I think the best way to learn, if you don’t have someone to teach you, is to start by taking something simple apart. Find a RUclips video of someone else doing it and follow along. Then see if you can put it back together again. Over time you gain confidence and skill. Just don’t start with something too complicated. Oh, and take photographs as you disassemble - this really helps when you can’t remember where the bits go! 😂👍
Other than some issue with the wiring, physically that game was in immaculate condition by the looks of it. Must have been in a box for a large portion of the 44 years. Very few scratches, stickers in very good shape and not a lot of caked on dirt, dust or hair.
It’s in great condition and is indeed still in its original box, with the original instruction leaflet. As you say, I imagine it has been in that box for most of its life!
On this game there were actually numbers on the plastic casing which corresponding to the connector on the board, 1,2,3,5,4 etc. It was fairly obvious with this game though because the wires were all different lengths and naturally fell to their correct position to a certain degree…
