- Inmates will be able to use computers and phones in their 'rooms' (left) - not cells - at HMP Berwyn in Wales, which will become the UK's largest prison when it fully opens later this summer. The £212million facility can hold up to 2,100 prisoners and also contains a full-sized 3G football pitch, gymnasium (bottom right) and even a children's playroom in the family visiting area (top right). Directors say the prison is taking a new approach towards rehabilitation where men 'will be given an opportunity to return to law-abiding lives'. Once fully operational, it is estimated the prison will create about 1,000 jobs and boost the local economy by about £23m per year.
