consider the stick as a machete that when used to strike with full force, its tip swings (specially if the attacker is mascular and strong). the defense can manuever to deflect the force in a different direction. this creates and open an angle to counter strike in a single move. hence, the need to control the stick/machete in all attacks and counter movements. the old generation style is not to block and stop the machete strike but to defensively create an angle so the force of strike deflects in a different way. in a real machete fight, the first attack ends in a chopped head, body, legs and arms. the balintawak style is unforgiving that it gives a flurry of counter attacks in a single strike.
