Not a Massey, a mini Advance-Rumley Steam Traction Engine

I have always been infatuated with steam power, and while on FB marketplace, half-heartedly looking for a baler - this came up. Had to have it.
Unfortunately, it came with a couple of problems, one being it was out of time and would only run backward. I got that figured out, but as you will see, the shake-down cruise wasn't totally smooth sailing.
This is a scale model of, from the best I can tell an Advance-Rumley Universal Engine, I don't believe it to be exact, but follows the general design.

The steam valve must be set correctly. It doesn't sound right.

I agree it isn’t fully correct and works against itself. However, when I set the valve to work perfectly in one direction it will not run at all in the other direction. It almost appears that the valve itself is too short
