Lyrics
Narrator:
Joseph's coat annoyed his brothers
Brothers:
But what makes us mad
Are the things that Joseph tells us of the
Dream's he often had
Joseph:
I dreamed that in the fields one day,
The corn gave me sign
Your eleven sheaves of corn
All turned and bowed to mine
My sheaf was was quite a sight to see
A golden sheaf and tall
Yours were green and second-rate
And really rather small
Brothers:
This is not the kind of thing
We brothers like to hear
It seems to us that Joseph and his
Dreams should disappear
Joseph:
I dreamed I saw eleven stars,
The sun the moon and sky
Bowing down before my star,
It made me wonder why
Could it be that I was born
For higgher thing than you?
A post in someone's government,
A ministry or two
Brothers:
The dreams of our dear brother are
The decade's biggest yawn
His talk of stars and goldens sheaves
Is just a load of corn
Not only is he tactless but
He's also rather dim
For there's eleven of us and
There's only one of him
The dreams of course will not come true
That is, we think they won't come true
That is, we hope they won't come true
What if he's right all along?
The dreams are more than crystal clear,
The writing on the wall
Means that Joseph some day soon
Will rise above us all
The accuracy of the dreams
We brothers do not know
But one thing we are sure about
The dreamer
Has to go

In the summer of 1967, Andrew Lloyd Webber was asked by Alan Doggett, head of the Music Department at Colet court, St Paul’s Junior School who taught his younger brother, Julian, to write a ‘pop cantata’ for the school choir to sing at their Easter end of term concert.
Andrew immediately approached his friend Tim Rice to ask if he would write lyrics for the project. After toying with ideas about spies, 007′s and the like, Tim suggested the story of Joseph.
The first performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was on a cold winter afternoon on 1st March 1968 at the Old Assembly Hall, Colet Court, Hammersmith.
Accompanied by the School orchestra and conducted by Alan Doggett, the performance was only 15 minutes long.
It was such a success that a second performance was arranged on 12th May 1968 at Central Hall, Westminster, where Andrew’s father was the organist. Julian Lloyd Webber gave a classical recital in the first half, along with Bill Lloyd Webber. The audience of approximately 2,500 consisted mainly of parents of the Colet Court boys. To Andrew and Tim’s surprise, Derek Jewell, Jazz and Pop Critic for The Sunday Times, saw the show and wrote a favourable review of Joseph, which appeared on 19th May 1968. A third performance took place on 9th November 1968 at St Paul’s Cathedral, where Joseph was expanded to include songs such as ‘Potiphar’ for the first time.

I love how they all looked like they had fun with the production. Sad I will never see a professional production live. I bet it would leave me stunned in amazement.
The actors are actually teachers.
I saw it with my mother when I was a child and remember loving it!
Never say never.

IM GOING TO BE IN THIS SHOW!
Okay, so Joseph was spoiled (I blame Jacob for that), but that's no reason to sell him into slavery!
Right. They had to repent of their jealousy. Yes, Jacob spoiled Joseph.
@@Musicienne-DAB1995 Thanks.
God knows before we do. He walks before us. He used the brothers jealousy to help them and the family. He had talent of interpreting dreams so God used it for good.
@@Meganolia Oh.
I disagree. We are doing this in school and everything he says is just so annoying 😭
It probably doesn't help that I'm playing a brother, who originally tried to kill him
Let's be honest here. Joseph's being a brat about his coat and dreams. I'M NOT SAYING HE SHOULD BE SOLD INTO SLAVERY. But...
@@karigonzales5912 dude it's a joke calm down please
Excatly why I like this show. We can understand why the brothers hated him. As a small child I could never understand that when I heard the story in Sunday School.
Katie I agree 😂

Commentators on Genesis have said the same thing in different words. Joseph saying that the sun, moon, and eleven stars would prostrate themselves to him hardly smacks of modesty.
I just now realized after 5 times of watching this movie that from 1:50 to 1:56 the book Joseph is reading is called “The Book of Dreams”.
@Chloe Mayfield I noticed that when I first watched it
Chloe,
There is no 'book of dreams'
It's meant to be funny. 🙂
He's actually reading the lyric sheet
“It made me whonder whu-hai”
HAHAHA

My brother did this for a play and he was JOSEPH
Did you force him against his will to play the part in exchange for money?
@@zissler1 no
@@corvo6842 that's good.
MINE TOO! I was one of the brothers (it was a small drama class) and i gotta say it was awkward as all hell watching him in the Potifar wife makeout moment DX

It is white!

I just got cast as one of the brothers and I’m so psyched!
Joseph's brothers sings about how to get rid of him
Joseph: "Oh hi guys." 👋
And next second he's in the pit. I hate this bit- it makes me so sad. I don't care how much Joseph shows off, nothing justifies his brother's actions.

1:21 Narrator gets lifted to her trap
I used to see this movie on vhs only the songs were at a different key. But the key in this video along with the others is the same key I heard on the soundtrack. And I like the soundtrack version better than the movie, until I heard it here on RUclips. By the way, my dad played Joseph at HIghland's Little Theatre back in 2002. I was in Junior High back then.
You guys no that this is donny Osmond right?? Best guy in show business ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
know* :)
I appreciate people who are able to perform this live but the movie will always be my favorite.
My friend mikey played the narrator and they did SO GOOD LIKE CHILLS THROUGHOUT THE SHOW
I'm auditioning for this and super excited! I hope I'm one of the brothers 😂

i'd die for a coat like that
This scene is so darn crazy!
things that are never explained jospeh reading a book of dreams where did he get that jospeh reading a book of dreams while eating icecream where did the icecream come from
The magic of Theatre.
I always took this play as (well, versions like this, anyway - different theater groups do their own takes on it) a teacher telling the school children this story, and the performances are the kids' ways of "living" the story through their imaginations. And that would explain all the wackiness, and the narrator being able to interact with the other characters and the anachronistic aspects. Their imaginations of the story unfolding is like a bridge between the two time periods.
From 1:27 her face is mood
Why is this comment section so barren
2:17 whys he touching her like that
I love the narrator!

When did they have 🍨🍦🍦🍨🍨🍦🍨🍨🍦in their time haahaahhaa??!!😁😁😂
Just remember that this is a childlike retelling of a Bible story. And the ice cream is obviously a joke.
If you've ever seen the stage version of this in Chicago (starring Donnie Osmond) the segment where Jacob's wife's are introduced it shows stem working at several things like knitting, carrying baskets of food, tending sheep and one of the items that passes by is a replica of The Sears Tower / Willis Tower, how ironic is that. It's a play set to music about the story about Joseph. Just contemporary storytelling.
Toby's brothers are mentioned in Joseph's dream because of "Joseph's coat annoyed his brothers" as Toby's brothers and Joseph's brothers are several brothers
Joseph’s not great at picking up social cues is he
Don't be mean. This comment hits hard with me because I'm autistic- a condition that means I have difficulty picking up social cues. Believe me it is not something to joke about. How do we know Joseph wasn't autistic?
My favourite is naphtali because singing and dancing really good xx
it is sooooo good
ILL LOVE THIS SONG MY WHOLE LIFE 💯

Relatable to a Greek Chorus character.
She helps tell the story.
TheOPPOSITE you could also claim she’s God in this show, since she pushes the story along.

the bible NEVER mentioned his African American brothers as shown in this and the other one looks like hes Half. Id like to know the story how those came about with his father.
I mean yeah, the other brothers are white. Most (if not all) of the cast is not the same race as the Bible characters. Benjamin (the seemingly mixed brother) was also a baby when this went down.
"African American" American?
Sounds like the relationship of Trump and the populace. Perhaps he had a dream.
the absolute mental gymnastics here
This movie is lowkey nostalgia I remember seeing this sht when I was in 2nd-3rd grade 21 years ago
