  • This video illustrates the viability of growing pawpaws in the temperate maritime climate of the Pacific northwest. Heavy production of high quality flavorful pawpaws can be achieved by selecting early ripening cultivars and growing them on favorable warm wind sheltered sites.
    Featuring Bob Duncan of Fruit Trees and More Nursery & Demonstration Orchard in Sidney BC, Canada. Created by Allison Gratz. Music by Steppin' In It.

    I am experimenting with planting Paw paw here in the cool Andes. I do not know if they will grow and fruit here but like the other members of the anonacea family i think it is more than worth the effort.

    Will try to grow one in pot in north-east of Canada (zone 4)
    Plenty of trees good for zone 5 live here (prunus avium, acer palmatum, Chamenomeles japonica, ect..) so I hope to get some results, and if it survive the first 2-3 years, I'll get another one for polinisation!

    Hello I just watched your video and enjoyed it so very much. I live in Calgary and I am simply desperate to get my hands on this plant. Have you tried growing the tree from seeds? I would really like to hear back from you, because I want to try this fruit so badly. Thank you for your video.

    i have one paw paw i planted 12 years ago i didnt know at the time you needed 2 for pollination.. its been flowering for the past 6 years but the flowers always fall off. Last year I had hundreds of flowers but the fruit never got larger then pea size before it fell off. This year though I have 6 of them that have survived and are pretty big around plum size at the moment. how is it possible that after 12 years and only 1 plant that its all of a sudden bearing fruit ?

    • @joshconeby
      @joshconeby 2 года назад +1

      It is possible for them to self-pollinate, each tree will grow both male and female flowers. But typically on a given tree, the female flowers mature first and begin to die just as the male flowers mature - so they will not often be receptive at the same time. In your case, you probably got lucky this year and some of the female flowers remained receptive just long enough to be pollinated. Some cultivars are better than others in this way. If you have two different varieties planted pretty close together (or better yet three), the flowers will mature at different times and so there's more of a chance for male and female to be active at the same time.
      What you could try is to graft another variety onto one or more of your tree's branches. That might give you the benefits of two trees without needing a second one. Although it would probably be a good idea to get a second tree if you can.

    nice.... this video is a little alarming... tho it may be unfounded(as i shake and have yet to consume asimina). how often do you consume fruits of the Asimina genus? the condition known as guadeloupean atypical parkinsonism, has been linked to novel fatty acids(also shown to be anti cancer, particularly of liver cancers) from Asimina. that study concluded if you were to consume a fruit a day for year, you'd develop that condition. I've yet to see a study of the accumulative effect. Tho, having a long history of use does give it some credence but, be nice to have some data.

    • @vacciniumaugustifolium1420
      @vacciniumaugustifolium1420 3 года назад +2

      Be carefull with those studies... Most of the data we have has been done in discutable condition like intravenous injection of the purified toxin.
      Also, case of atypical parkinson are mostly associated with leaves infusion and are relatively rare (I heard something like 20 cases confirmed) In asia, the fruits of the Anonacea familly are heavily consumed by the population and they don't seem to present a lot of case of atypical parkinson or they never did serious study on the subject...
      We can't say its harmless, but we can't say it a true danger to healt, personally I think that since Pawpaw are not extremely productive trees and the fact the fruit don't stay good for long, the risk is really, really small if consumed in rather small quantity and during a short period of the year.
      If you dig further, you'll hear some rumors about Neil Peterson tremors associated with his extreme consuption of pawpaws : M. Peterson clearly said his tremors are related to his medication ( lithium) he take for chronical headache. Anyway, I doubt we will ever truly see a serious study on the subject of the toxicity of pawpaws since the commercial interest for this fruit is fairly low.
      Good news is the KSU ( I think they are now the most serious developer of this fruit) started to include the annonacin concentration in their selection critera ! Maybe in a few generation of selection, their won't be an issue at all!

      mumbairay I don’t know if it is possible. You could try a nursery called Minter Gardens in Chilliwack BC. I bought mine there. The owner is a very popular gardening guru here. Maybe he could ship you a couple of trees. I mean, we are able to get lobster from Newfoundland... who knows. Good luck!

    I was given Paw Paw seeds and don't know if they are from different variety trees. Does that mean that I cannot expect good fruit from them unless I purchase different varieties to go with these future trees?

    • @meethu101

      Every seed produces a genetically different and unique tree. Therefore seedling trees from the same fruit/tree would still cross pollinate and give you abundant fruit

      @@veryannoyingname Yes most fruit tree will fruit faster from cutting and rooting from older tree and No pawpaw it 95% chance likely will NOT root from cutting. I grow fruit tree and garden as hobby around my house watch them grow and stay happy ( my pawpaw is now enter its 2nd years it only 3ft tall but it very healthy that keep me happy ) remember pawpaw like lot of water but have to stay above water.

      It not invasive at all because of it slow growing rate, rich soil picky and small to mid size tree.
