I agree with Galloway on this issue. I never allowed my children on cell phones and social media until they were grown. I just don't think children need to be on social media. Parents have the right to refuse social media services to their own children and restrict gaming and television. Sometimes family time with board games and books goes a long way. 🙂📚📚📚📚📚📚📚📚📚📚📚

I don't think this is the governments job. It is a nice thought but their job should be more focused on providing education to people and children so they can critically think better and hopefully in turn become better parents. The problem is even FB and Instagram have age restrictions and parents let even those super young children have accounts who don't meet that obviously pathetic age restriction. You could set laws up for it and then you would have parents who be cool with their 13 yo daughters saying they are 18 yo just so they can hang out. Parenting has gone to Shite.

I have to say as a Teenager and now adult who grew up in the middle of all of this. There are two sides of social media that are damaging. There is the aspect of body image that destroys your self confidence. But I think what's arguably worse is the loneliness it can induce. The experience of lying in your bed alone scrolling through social media and seeing people having fun constantly while u feel isolated is something any teenager today has experienced. However I don't think taking away communications isnt the solution either. I still enjoy being able to contact friends easily through Snapchat and I did when I was younger as well. Overstep and miscalculated responses are a real danger here. Issues like this require surgical care. If u deny your kids access to social media you can double down that isolation because they become the odd man out. I'm not an expert on this and I don't pretend to have all answers. But social media is more complex then drugs and alcohol. It plays into the need for connection which is more powerful than any aspect of our lives. We need reform but not total bans.

I am a teacher (grades 5-12 science) bothered by the pressure put on younger kids, as young as 3rd grade in my experience, to make their own bodies a sexualized tool to gain status. I don’t believe it’s a new problem but social media platforms make comparisons, photo alteration, and body shaming easier to participate in. Kids, both male, female, and non-binary cannot seem to escape the addiction of it. Compare the poses of young girls from stores like Target to the women who model for pornography photography - the similarities are striking. Add social media platforms to an already toxic culture of gender roles and we have a big mess with our kids in the middle.

It’s not problem with social media in itself. I was a teenager in the 1990s - without social media obviously- but the level of toxicity regarding body image was extreme at that time. It seemed as if every second teenage girl was suffering from bulimia and anorexia.Did people forget how it used to be? It wasn’t just fun and games. There are many great and inspiring stuff on social media that actually can help young people , especially the ones who don’t fit in. Of course there are some bad stuff on it, but that’s just one side of it. The same like with TV (old generation used to make the same toxic arguments about TV). The same can be applied to radio, books, and other form of entertainment. Teach children and young people responsibility and how to use social mediA and don’t ban it. It’s so bizarre to me how people fail to think rationally these days.

I understand both sides of this argument but, sometimes I think society is shifting them blame to things like social media and violent video games. I grew up with guns in my home but, my parents drilled gun safety into us. Which my siblings and I have distilled in their children. A video game is a video game. I played Mario Brothers until my gold coins came out my ears, but you dont see me robbing banks for loot. A shoot em up video game is not like real life either. They never encouraged me to pick up a gun and go shoot the person I was made at. I see red every time someone blames some person's horrendous actions on a game. I grew up when chat rooms started to become popular and then the rise of social media. There were preditors online then. If someone got skeezy you said see you creep and shut them down. I can see how it can affect younger people since they are so impressionable but, my parents also instilled the belief in me that if someone doesnt like me or makes fun of me that they are not worth my notice. There are others out there that are worth my time and effort. My niece has gone through some bullying via social media. Unplug. Step away from social media. There is nothing life altering or life ending happening on social media that they cant live without. There were some things my parents did that irritated me growing up and I would not want to repeat that myself but, I got to ask, what did we do wrong with raising our kids versus our parents to get children that cannot advocate for themselves. I see parents doing things for their kids all the time that my parents never would have done because, they wanted to teach me how to do it or know where to ask for help. I swear if I hear "I didnt know" or "I dont know why I didnt do it", I may not have any hair left. We have got to instill a more self-sufficient mindset in our young people today!
