This week I was diagnosed with Neural foraminal stenosis. Is that the same thing as Cervical Stenosis? The exercises are really helpful and I am so grateful to AskDoctorJo for posting.
Hi iam Edwina my problem is cervical spine stenosis and pain my upper back and neck,I watched your video exercises for the neck goes to my head on right side and I want to exercises for upper back, for is helpful thank you
Since I had surgery on my neck in 2016, I have problems with range of motion in the areas you mentioned in the video. I will definitely take your advice. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Ma’am, I was diagnosed with cervical spinal canal stenosis of around 5 mm spinal diameter which was told to be on immediate concern and was advised to go for Anterior dissectomy surgery but I am hesitant to go for any surgeries and Wouk prefer any non surgical procedures. Please let me know if these exercises can alleviate the probability of worsening the stenosis
Thank you! I also just discovered nerve flossing from echo yoga and am really seeing relief from these stretches and exercises. I have severe narrowing so this is now my life!💜
Thank you so much for this! Excellent timing because my doctor told me this is why my thumb is numb. As soon as I get the inflammation down I will be using this video to help!
Would be interested to know if your numbness disappeared - I have a numb thumb and finger - severe stenosis and was due for surgery but cancelled due to Corona virus - would love to try this first.
Thank you so very much. I recently had an MRI for cervical stenosis. My neurosurgeon recommended it because I have mobility and stability issues and involuntary hand movements on my right hand. I really appreciate all the information. Thank you so very much.🙏❤️❤❤
It depends on what stage of recovery you are in and how your body reacts to treatment, but in general, therapeutic exercises can be done 1-3 times a day, every day.
Thank you so much for this. I have severe neural foraminal stenosis. The worst is at C3-C4, and C5-C6 left neural foramen. I also have a herniated disc at C2-C3. The neck pain is often debilitating and radiates down into my left shoulder blade and then is more widespread across my upper back, left shoulder, and down my left arm into my hand. I've had 2 guided x-ray injections over 5 years, which has helped tremendously, but couldn't afford to do the PT they wanted me to do 3-4x a week in the office. Now I'm back in pain again from (I guess) a flare up or something. This video is now bookmarked on my computer and I'm doing these stretches daily. The difference in ROM was immediate. I can't thank you enough for graciously providing this - especially useful now during COVID-19 when we're under stay-at-home orders. My only question is, I have adequate pain relief during and immediately after these exercises, but it's very temporary. The pain comes back shortly after, and nothing will ease it except lying flat when I sleep. I often have difficulty simply holding my head up - the pain gets unbearable. Which is a real problem because I'm teleworking, on my laptop all day. If I'm diligent in doing these exercises every day, 3x a day, will the pain ever get better? Thank you so much.
You're welcome, and thanks for subscribing! It really just depends on how severe it is, but in general, yes, it can get better. You just have to be very consistent with your program even when feeling better. It can be frustrating because it may take awhile (several weeks, months) before really feeling long term relief, but if you stick with it, hopefully you will get there.
Dr. Jo, I have two questions. love your stretches but I'm wondering how strengthening helps? I'm 52 and have been dealing with neck and trap pain for six months. I stretch and ice almost everyday and it helps. Massages also help, temporarily. I'd get them every day if I could. This is getting old. I've never had an injury, it just came out of the blue. I've always worked out and run, but if I'm honest I avoid doing neck strengthening exercises because I'm afraid it'll irritate my neck. Second question, do you have patients that get "over the hump" and relieve their chronic symptoms? I have narrowing of c3 and c5 and my recent MRI revealed I don't need surgery and according to my spin Dr. and PT my MRI "honestly doesn't look that bad". I think the strengthening is what I need but I'm wondering how exactly it helps. I appreciate any advice. ;)
Hey!!! Neck strengthening is usually done by isometrics. I believe when we do isometrics, we are also practising a contract relax method of pain relief, so this neck strengthening exercise should instantly relax the muscles and help ease the pain as a short term relief and outcome. When you continue with your neck strengthening program for few sessions, the strengthened muscles will off load the pain of painful soft tissues and fibres, the strengthened muscles will allow healing of painful soft tissue ( by offloading,by removing pain substances too).
Could you share advanced exercises as I have been doing these exercises since many months and adapted to I am having cervical stenosis at c5 -c6 causing compression while extending my neck and lat flexion n rotation
This is great! Do you recommend these exercises to someone with myelopathy caused by a herniated disc? Also, I am only 35 and wondering if my C5/C6 disc can heal. I'm doing everything, exercising, eating right (collagen, Vitamin D, omega3s, etc.) using heat compresses and more. I am wondering, have you seen someone with myelopathy caused by herniation recover from spinal stenosis without surgery?
Oh my God I can’t believe the first stretch took away the sharp pain I was having for my stenosis. I have to work with the others because I’m really tight right now but I will follow you. Thank you so much!
I like your video with explanations, initially, but could you make some videos where we just follow along an exercise routine, maybe to music. And refer them to this video for how to do it. Please? That would motivate me to do it every day if I could just follow along the routine.

Hello Dr... Iam 35 yrs. I have cervical spondilosis, degnarative disc deases, c5-6 and c6-7 disc bluge, and also stenosis. Plz Dr suggest me what exercise are good for me...
My upper cervical needs to be adjusted almost daily. Got adjusted today. Once the joint calms down I'm gonna carefully do the stretches. Wondering if muscle tension keeps yanking my neck out. I am a blue collar worker.
OH MY!!! I have congenital cervical stenosis. I have been through a couple of therapies and learned a lot on self management, but I haven't been able to figure out how to get the levator scapula. Now I know and I didn't realize how effective isometrics would be when my muscles are already tight. Thank you for sharing your expertise!
Hi doctor, I have been suffering from neck pain for last 6 years. I visited so many hospitals but none can helped. In my MRI report it stated a mild cervical neural foramen narrowing that compressing right side nerve. My pain is increasing day by day and it literally feel like hell for me. Is these stretches can reduce my pain?
Hi Dr Jo I have bilateral foraminal stenosis and end up with numb hands even though I'm taking gabapentin, was just about to take a diazepam as I'm bad today, done most of these (chin tuck gives me a headache) feel a lot better now and will avoid the diazepam for now, thanks these really helped.
I have cervical pain often 2 or 3 times in a month, is this exercise helpful for me for the same as I am taking painkillers on regularly basis ...please reply
Hello doctor jo, my father has this severe cervical stenosis and also high cholestrol so one night he got all weak on his left limbs and doctors said it might be a TIA or the stenosis causing it, and is it possible for the stenosis to make his left limb weak, if so can this excercise be a treatment or a pain relief. And what is the treatment. I am Really looking forward to your reply, thank you.
I am so glad I found your channel. You are so so awesome. My spine and back shoulder area is hurting after me turning this morning. I found this happens more often if I sleep on my tummy at night. any good exercises to strengthen my muscles in that area? Thanks a lot
I had cervical spinal stenosis w/ mylopethy surgery about 6 months ago. I went to physical therapy for a couple of months. My neck pain is getting painful again. I am sure it's probably because I am not stretching. Should I do these daily?
Hi Dr Jo. I don't have headaches but I do have weakness in my right arm and hand once in awhile pain near my right shoulder blade. I had an MRI done and the Doctor i saw said i had spinal stenosis ( assuming cervical )and that it was putting pressure on one of the nerves in my neck. I don't have any neck pain. Will these exercises help to reduce the pressure on the nerve. I was wondering if anyone in the comments has the same symptoms. Thanks for all you do.
Unfortunately, I don't know that answer since I can't evaluate you. Everyone is different. If your diagnosis is spinal stenosis, hopefully these will help, but if there is any way you can see a physical therapist in person, they should be able to help you figure out a specific program for you and help answer your questions.
I just got diagnosed with Cervical Stenosis. I have to go see a spinal surgeon. Do I need surgery for sure or can I just do these stretching exercises?
I'm under the assumption that my vagus nerve is compressed. Tried these stretches tonight and they brought some almost immediate relief my neck tension and soreness, but also seemed to send calming rush through my whole body like it also relieved some nerve compression.
I have a problem of..posterior disc osteophytes complex with left paracentral protrusion and annular fissuring at c5-c6 disc problem ....any treatment without opretion...if possible... please reply
Hey, I have some neck stiffness and every morning when I wake up my middle finger in my left hand hurts. It feels like a nerve is pulled at the side of the finger. It’s been on and off for last couple of weeks but the finger only hurts in the morning and then after I move it a few times the pain in finger disappears. Any idea which one of your videos will help. I am confused where the compression at night when I sleep is coming from.thanks so much!
I have been diagnosed with mild stenosis on the neck, but what hurts the most is my left arm and it gets numb, what exercises can I do for that? Thank you.
Thank you, very helpful. When I do the chin tuck, I feel a lot of pressure at the base of my skull and forehead, kind of a viscous headache feeling.. and crackling, squidgy sounds. Should I still do that exercise? I have a gentle cervical kyphosis (xrays show very straight cervical spine), I have some instability C3 on C4, and disc herniation and central canal stenosis at C5 slightly flattening spinal cord. C6/7 marked foraminal stenosis with bilayeral nerve impingement - cannot extend back at all from C6/7, modic 2 type degenerative disc disease with broad based endplate osteophytes. Can trying to improve ROM aggravate my condition?
Your 5 best cervical stenosis exercises & stretches are strictly for those who are diagnosed with cervical spinal stenosis, but not for thoracic or lumbar spinal stenosis, am I right? Thank you and hope to get your professional advice.
Having the spine strong and flexible everywhere is a good thing, but if you have stenosis somewhere else, these are probably not the best ones for another area.
Hi Doctor Jo I have cervical spinal stenosis at c6-c7 and this exercise definitely helps , do u think with the exercise can Iive a normal life ? I have consulted doctors they said to do walk and this exercise , so have few questions 1) How much time should I do these daily currently Im doing twice a day? 2) Is there any more exercise I can add with these?
Hi @AskDoctorJo, I'm not sure if you will see this but if you do I was just wondering in your experience, when is it you recommend surgery for someone with cervical spinal stenosis? I understand that stenosis is common for many and for some people surgery is not necessary at all, but for some people it is. I am getting so much conflicting advice from medical professionals and I do not know who to trust. I want to avoid surgery at all cost, but I also know my symptoms have been getting much worse lately and on a recent MRI they say I have a herniated disk and Moderate to Severe Spinal Stenosis on my C5/C6 vertebrae. I am 28 years old and am a very active athlete in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. My main concern is I don't want to risk having surgery if it is unnecessary, and could possibly cause me more problems down the road, but I also do not want to risk putting it off too long and possibly becoming paralyzed/losing strength or dexterity. My chiropractor says he doesn't think I need it because I still have strength, although every time I cough my arms tingle/feel asleep/numb. I just don't want to put it off and eventually lose strength. My regular doctor says he doesn't think I am going to become paralyzed out of nowhere, but he does not see me getting better without surgery. I talk to a surgeon soon, and I am sure he is going to tell me I need surgery ASAP. I truly don't know the right answer. I respect my chiropractor and I understand and am thankful that he is trying to help me not be frightened or bullied into having surgery, but I also don't want to risk becoming permanently damaged, and I am tired of living in pain. Once again I don't know if you will see this, but if you do, I understand that all individuals cases are different, but overall, at what point do you see physical therapy/non surgical treatments no longer seem to be working and you would recommend one of your clients to seek surgical intervention? Thank you for your time, and sorry for the novel. I am just trying to get as much input as possible from as many professionals as possible.
@@thalai143 sorry I'm just seeing this. What ended up happening was I got a disc replacement but my symptoms returned after about 3 months. They took out the artificial disc and then did a fusion of my c5-c6. I am about 5 months out from that surgery and I really feel great. I haven't lost much mobility and I havent had any numbness or tingling. I would have preferred no surgery at all, or that the first surgery took, but besides that I am happy with the results. I went to different surgeons and doctora and the surgery seemed like the best idea after trying therapy and other methods to avoid it. I think if you have to have surgery, just make sure you find a surgeon that you trust and that is reputable. It's a scary situation, but once you weigh the options, you shouldn't be scared of it. Hopefully you can avoid it at all, but don't think it's the end of the world if you do. Now I'm still only 5 months out so it is still early, but overall I am thankful I did it and am thankful it went well. I am happy overall with the outcome so far. I hope that helps!
Hi there I have cervical spinal stenosis did facet nerve blocking injection for 3 times by neurosurgeon.. To continue my upper body workout can I do BAND exercises for my arms and upper back muscles?? Thx
Hi Dr Jo, I have poor proprioception and tingling in tongue/scalp on left side (almost like a nerve problem) after an injury to my left neck/jaw area - would these kind of exercises be useful for the SCM area of the neck?
Dear doctor I have multiple ostephytes lesions ,c5c6 bulging&spinal stenosis &bilateral neural canal narrowing mild to moderate. After this excercise my right hand also started numbness and tingling.before only left hand .otherwise I feel better my stiffness is it normal waiting for u r reply 🙏
Sometimes it's normal to feel slightly more pain or soreness afterwards as long as it goes away in a few hours or by the next day. But with all that is going on, you really need to go see a physical therapist in person for treatment. This video is just for stenosis, not all that you have.
Got that same problem today c5/6 narriwing mild to moderate from mri scan . Bad news! I wonder how you keeping/ and treatments did you have! Any recommendations ?

Hello doctor jo, my father has this severe cervical stenosis and also high cholestrol so one night he got all weak on his left limbs and doctors said it might be a TIA or the stenosis causing it, and is it possible for the stenosis to make his left limb weak, if so can this excercise be a treatment or a pain relief. And what is the treatment.
I am Really looking forward to your reply, thank you.
mentioning the wall for the chin tuck helped greatly.

I had cervical spinal stenosis w/ mylopethy surgery about 6 months ago. I went to physical therapy for a couple of months. My neck pain is getting painful again. I am sure it's probably because I am not stretching. Should I do these daily?
Yes, you can do these 1-2 times a day. Good luck.
Thank you . I already felt the relief from the pain. Doing this exercises will heal the stenosis?
You're welcome.
I just got diagnosed with Cervical Stenosis. I have to go see a spinal surgeon. Do I need surgery for sure or can I just do these stretching exercises?
Dr jo when I doing weight training that time my neck and shoulder pain from left side.these exercises will cure my problem
They might help.
A saving grace for me ohmygosh. Thank you for all the help! I could feel the difference 😊
You're welcome!
I'm under the assumption that my vagus nerve is compressed. Tried these stretches tonight and they brought some almost immediate relief my neck tension and soreness, but also seemed to send calming rush through my whole body like it also relieved some nerve compression.
Hi Dr Jo! How many times a week can I safely do these exercises?
I have mild cervical stenosis. Thank you for your exercises which help when I have some arm tingling. Is it ok to play golf with cervical stenosis?

I have a tumour in my spinal canal inseparable to the c5 nerve root, I find it so hard to find specific stretches like this! thank you
How are u now?
Very useful indeed!
My physiotherapist asked to count 1-10.:) You included many more exercises.
Thank u!
You’re welcome!
Will pt and stretching stop the progression of spinal stenosis? Help to avoid surgery or just relieve symptoms?
Yes, it can do both.
@@AskDoctorJo What kind of doctor are you?
Doctor of physical therapy.
@@AskDoctorJo The exercises really help. Thank you! I don't want surgery!!
You're welcome. Good luck!
Thank you.
The above video should help. Getting more flexibility and strength in the neck should help with the numbness.
Hi Dr. Jo. I was diagnosed with cervical stenosis and myelopathy (cord compression), are the exercises safe if you have cord compression? Thank you!!
I have cervical stenosis. These stretches made my day. Thank you so much.
You're welcome.
I start to get nerve involvement when I do the tuck. Is that ok or should I only move without any pain?
I'm finding some nice warm heat packs feel good after these stretches. Is that cool???
Hi Doctor Jo I have cervical spinal stenosis at c6-c7 and this exercise definitely helps , do u think with the exercise can Iive a normal life ? I have consulted doctors they said to do walk and this exercise ,
so have few questions
1) How much time should I do these daily currently Im doing twice a day?
2) Is there any more exercise I can add with these?
Did you get any cure ?
Hi Bro,how has it been going so far?
Hope you’re getting better
Hello whats the progress?
I hope that helps!
will these exercises work for cervical retrolisthesis?
Great thanks You for your work!
You're welcome!
During sleeping or neck bending feels vertigo then which exercise is best to avoid vertigo?
Hi there I have cervical spinal stenosis did facet nerve blocking injection for 3 times by neurosurgeon..
To continue my upper body workout can I do BAND exercises for my arms and upper back muscles??
Thx
I don't know since I can't evaluate you. You will need to ask your neurosurgeon if it's okay.
Hi Dr Jo, I have poor proprioception and tingling in tongue/scalp on left side (almost like a nerve problem) after an injury to my left neck/jaw area - would these kind of exercises be useful for the SCM area of the neck?
Dr Jo could cervical spinal stenosis cause lightheadedness (The dizziness that at times could cause passing out?) ?
There is something called cervical vertigo that can cause dizziness.
What a relief. Thank you so much!
You’re welcome!
