This lens has made my old camera like brand new. The aperture of the kit lens I used to have was so small that the photos were just like what a phone could take. This lens with a large aperture gives off a great atmosphere. The blurry effect is so pretty. It's small yet the metal quality is excellent and it's really sturdy. Manual focusing makes photography even more enjoyable. The focusing ring is really smooth. After getting used to it, focusing is quick. Great value!
Thanks for your feedback. I agree that any f/1.4 lens is a huge step over a kit zoom lens. And regarding price and performance, the TT Artisan 35/1.4 is fantastic!
My mind got confused starting this video. I was searching for some third party fuji lens reviews when i stumbled upon this one. The first shot of your video is just around the corner of where i live. I walk here everyday. What a coincidence. Thanks for the content!
I love Köln. I’ve been a few times over the last 20 yrs, the last time Christmas 3 yrs ago and we have good friends there but I’m from far away in Australia. Looking forward to returning again in easier travel times!
Thank you for taking the time to review this lens. I own the lens (as well as the Takumar lens you mentioned) and I am very pleasantly surprised by it's performance. For its price point, it's outstanding and overall it is very respectable.
@@florentbellom I bought the 50 too. This time from BH as I was hoping for faster shipping. Still has not shipped as far as I can tell. I ordered it in early December.
I enjoy your review style. Thank you! I have this and the 17mm TT on the way. Very much looking forward to trying them out. I spent many years using adapted or converted classic manual lenses on my EOS 5D and it is nice to find tiny, fast lenses to go with my small Fuji system.
Thank you for a wonderful, pleasant, and informative review. I have (in hand) the 50/1.2 and just ordered the 35/1.4. I will also buy the 17/1.4 when it becomes available. My lenses will be used on my Sony APS-C cameras (A5100 & A6600).
Nice photos, Good solid lens by the sounds of it. Good review. I have a fuji x pro and use the "fujinons" so really didn't think about the OVF being blocked but that's something I will look out for more now.
I know especially from Leica M how the bigger lenses can intrude into the OVF view. But as far as I remember when I tried out an X-Pro the last time, it was the same there. So I guess the smaller and shorter the lens barrel, the better it is if you want to use the OVF.
Hi Tom! I never comment but I wanted to say thank you for your review. I've been on the hunt for a new camera for a few weeks, since the original Canon G7 X has become a real pain for doing real photography. And yes, I've been using G7 X for portraits, I'm insane. Anyway, with my modest budget, I finally got a used X-E2s paired with 7artisans 35/1.4 and couldn't be happier. Not the same as TT but still quite similar. I'm blown away with the results, performance and the amount of control I'm not seizing. Your review was the last straw that broke the camel's back. I'm really glad I've nailed the perfect ratio of price/performance. Again, thank you, and keep doing great, detailed, and eye-pleasing videos that you do. Greetings from Moscow, Russia!
Thanks for your feedback! Yes the X-E2 is still a great camera (as are many older Fuji bodies). I never tried the 7Artisans 35/1.4 myself but from what I have seen, it is also a good lens. That combo is all one needs for awesome photos. And yes manual focus gives you even more a feeling of controlling the result yourself!
Thanks for your great review, I went and bought one, love this lense it's so tactile and very easy to use, I even like the lense cap, no plastic! An all round great lense.
Thank you very much for this review. Will be ordering this lens soon for X-E2 :-) I had 7Artisans 35mm f/1.2 and I did not like aperture ring without clicks (for photography). Also it was quite very soft at 1.2 so I usually used it anyways at 1.4+. Surprisingly TTartisan is also cheaper so that is all sure pickup for me :-)
I didn't try the 7artisans 35/1.2 for myself. Should be also an interesting lens if you're ready for some more "dreamy" look at open aperture. 7artisans now also released a brand-new 35/0.95 which should be much better than their old small f/1.2, but is also way more heavy and more expensive.
Thanks! Just to be clear: The XF 23/2 and 50/2 are brilliant lenses and have (almost no) optical distortion - only the 35/2 shows a lot of distortion and heavy digital correction to cure this!
Hi Tom, I have the Fuji 35mm f/1.4 but this lens is a better compact solution for my X-E4. Sadly though I have just had to sell mine... as I found a new silver version - very cool!
It’s a different lens from a different manufacturer (even though they have oddly similar names!) but yes, you are right: the optical performance should be similar!
i just recieved my copy! fantastic lens. i also had problem with my focus but it is so simple to fix! took me 2 min to correct it from focusing past infinity. for the price its just crazy value! waiting for 50mm and 17mm.
That sounds great! So you got one that focuses past infinity. Mine stops at around 30 or so metres, just short of infinity. But in practice, it's never a problem. They will ship the 50/1.2 next it seems.
@@jasonyoung1999 if your lens focuses past infinity then loosen 2 of 3 screws, not removing them and, precisely focus your lens on infinty. Then lose last screw and very gently turn now completely lose ring to match the infinty with index. Slowly screw down the screws. Job done. If lens cannot rech infinity turn ring to stop as near as possible then back it down a little like 5mm, losen the screws and gently push now lose ring forward and screw down. Apply corrections same way as in first method. Simple and safe for lens no worry to brake anything
@@ninjastronghold Yeah, I tried that but loosening the 3 screws the focus doesn't disengage when I try to reposition. One screw came out because I thought it was still catching somehow but that wasn't it. Not sure why it's not working so I sent it back and waiting another copy. Hopefully, new one is better aligned.
@@jasonyoung1999 strange, my ring came lose easy, with no force. You should try to remove screws completely and maybe poking it a little? Its just ring over another ring , only those 3 scres hold it in place
Great review and video. I was wondering if you had tried to use the zone focussing scale on that lens and if it was precise enough for street use. Thanks
I rarely use zone focusing. But yes, the scale is reasonably accurate on this lens. That's the advantage if you have the infinity mark set up correctly. I'd always recommend to zone focus at apertures around f/8 though, but that's my general recommendation, not just for this specific lens!
Hi Tom,. fine Review ! I recommand the Fotasy 39mm Lens Hood, it matches this TT Artisan 35/1.4 APS-C Lens perfectly, it's a HQ vented Lens Hood Design.
@@tomscameras Small update - TTA released into 2020 later it's very own 39mm Lens Hood, with funnel design. Whileas not a special vented Lens Hood, i like it on my TTA 35/1.4 Lens.
@@marcp.1752 many thanks for updating your info!! The vented design would be useful on the X-Pro series bodies… but otherwise there’s no difference in use. I admit I am using my lens without any hood most of the time 😱😜
@@tomscameras exactly! Not onto the X-E Series, since they all use a EVF. ;) I like the Lens hood, both of them, but since the 35/1.4 TTA is only my E1, i do prefer the original hood. On the X-Pro1, it's a different Story, the vented Hood for the hybrid OVF/EVF for sure. :)
Thank you for the detailed and very useful reviews. I have some of these cheaper prime lenses amd use them on my sony apsc cameras. These cameras have zoom extender softwares bulit into them, so prime lenses can be used as zoom lenses with some quality loss of course. Its great fun and a cheap way to learn and enjoy creative photography . I would love te read reviews about how this new ai zoom extender software works on various cameras.
Yes Sony uses some clever software to zoom into pictures. Petapixel talks about it here: petapixel.com/2023/09/21/behold-the-power-of-sony-clear-image-zoom-a-feature-nobody-talks-about/ Myself, I don’t use Sony cameras anymore on any regular base so unfortunately I also can’t comment on how good it really works.
Thanks for a nice review of this new lens that I hadn't heard of till now. I am a fan of classic manual lenses so this will work well in my collection especially at its reasonable price. I wear glasses and find the EVF of the X-E3 awkward to use for manual focus. This lens would sit better on my X-T30.
Thanks for your comment! Yes I also love manual lenses a lot. I use the Pen Zuiko 38/1.8 often as well but this new lens is better IMO (except distortion). But maybe also my copy of the Zuiko isn't the greatest, after 50 years ... The EVF of the X-E3 is small and bad for glasses, yes. Good Fuji gives us a choice of many different body styles ... :)
I always enjoy your lens reviews. I have been a typical dad taking family pictures using autofocus for several years. Now I am dedicating some time to learn real photography. Still new. My question is I just bought a Sigma 18-35 F1.8 DC lens. Would this 35 mm be a good addition giving me extra or different abilities?
The Sigma is a pretty substantial and also a very good lens. And f/1.8 is not the hugest of differences to f/1.4. So the TT Artisan won't offer you a lot of new abilities. But it will be MUCH smaller and more light weight. So maybe you'll take your camera with you more often! Note the TT Artisan is manual focus. Some photographers love it, others don't. It's definitely slower but also you'll pay more attention to where you place your focus point. So it can be a rewarding process. If you're asking me about a lens that really compliments your Sigma, maybe have a look at the TT Artisan 35/0.95 or the 7Artisans 35/0.95 lenses. They're again about an f/stop faster, and that can sometimes make a real difference compared to f/1.8. I have reviews of both these lenses on my channel.
AS for the lens cap , the push on cap just slides off even just turning the camer upside down. Its now available in Cann RF mount which I bought last week, it has a 39mm filter size but no filter or screw in lens hood will fit !?
Hello from Portugal. Nice review Tom. I'm in the market to buy a manual fast lens. My doubts about what lens I'll buy, were disapeared when I saw this video of yours. I have a Canon M50 and I think this lens will match perfectly. Keep up those good reviews. Best regards
Thank you for this nice review. I am wandering if the TTArtisan 17mm 1.4 would be a nice addition to my Panasonic GX80 + 12-32 3.5-5.6 lens. Manual focusing is a bit of a challenge depending on the situation.
The 17/1.4 should be also nice on MFT. There's another lens though that I really loved on my MFT cameras and that is the small Panasonic 20/1.7. You can get it used at pretty low prices. There is an old version I and a II, but optically they are identical. It is extremely small and compact, offers almost the same field of view and speed as the 17/1.4 ... and it's auto focus!
Hi Denny, many thanks! Glad you like it! BTW, I also wanted to make a review of the new TT Artisan 50/1.2 but somehow they just didn't ship my lens so I cancelled the order ... And then I did other videos and got distracted :) Have to order that one again!
I have the 50/1.2 lens from the TTArtisan trio. With a small screwdriver, I was easily able to adjust the infinity stop to perfection. Does this lens have the same three screws to loosen the focus ring?
Hi Tom, now a year later, the TTA 23/1.4 is out, i get my copy next january 2022. :-) Would like to see a review with many samples as usual also from you. Greetings
Actually, TT Artisan wanted to send me one! Or so they said. But I didn't get a copy. I assume the one hand doesn't know what the other does :) and my channel is still very small, as well! I think I'll be reviewing this lens also in January 2022!
@@tomscameras Sounds Fun, Tom! :) First Reviews are out now, the one from Richard Wong is surely better, this time than Christopher Frost. But i want(ed) that Lens anyway. :-)
Yes! There were no manual 23/1.4 lenses so this gap is finally closed! By the way I got now the confirmation. I will be able to shoot and review the TT Artisan in early January 2022!
Hi Tom, would like to see Samples and a Review from the TT Artisan 50/1.2 APS-C, and 17/1.4 APS-C, when it is being released. The 35/1.4 APS-C. i ordered straight after Announcement. ;-) Its for my old X-E1. Famous Fujifilm Ambassador Jonas Rask already reviewed the 50mm F1.2 TT Artisan APS-C Lens, with excellent Results, as Portrait Lens. Merry Xmas!
Hi Marc, thanks for your comment. Yes, I already ordered the new 50/1.2. I hope I can do the review in January. Yes Jonas Rask and the other ambassadors ofc get their lenses even before release. I already saw his review. It seems a very good lens just like the 35/1.4! Maybe one day they'll send me lenses to review before sales release as well :)
Hi Thomas. Thank you for your review. Thanks to your review I bought the lens. I have a Panasonic Lumix G6 Body. The aperture number is not shown on the display I noticed. How is that possible? I can't adjust aperture on screen either. I had returned the previous 7Artisans to Kamera-Express because of this problem. They didn't know there either. Does it work for you to set the aperture on the display?
Hi! The behavior of your lenses is absolutely normal. These are fully manual lenses. They have no electrical contacts and so they cannot communicate with the camera. You have to set the camera to A (aperture priority) or M (manual exposure) and you set the aperture on the ring on the lens! That’s how all manual lenses are designed. Also adapted old lenses will work like this.
@@louismaxell I didn’t do a direct comparison, no. I already prefer the TT Artisan because of the clicked aperture and the somewhat self-adjustable hard stop at infinity, which is a very convenient feature in real life. And the TT Artisan‘s optics are very good. It’s a bit different to the f/0.95 lenses where the 7Artisans is better than the TT Artisan, which has some optical flaws. But the TT Artisan 35/1.4 is so good that I would always base my decision on the handling, as said before.
Hey, I am really sorry! But video is not the scope of my reviews. Having said that I would have a look at other brands for video because the clicked aperture of the TT Artisan lenses is not good for video, whereas for example 7Artisans or Kamlan all have stepless aperture rings …
Is this alot better image quality than 7artisans 35mm f1.2 mark II ? I got that used for 100 dollars.. here in Norway it is about 180dollars new. Should I sell that i buy this instead for my xs10 ? The 0.95 filter size was just to big. I like my setup small.. if you feel the quality of this lens is much better than the 7artisans 35mm f1.2 Mark II.. I'll probably change. I just read that Jonas rask review of 1.2 .. and even if it was the worse lens his mounted... it seems like he loved the imperfection of that lens. The look and so on.. I haven't gotten it yet. But, it will be fun to see how worse this image quality will be against fuji f2 35mm and 50mm f2. I feel that my pancake 27mm 2.8 it's just as good as my f2 lenses..
I have not tried out the 35/1.2 in detail but from what I have seen, the TT Artisan 35/1.4 has better optics, yes. What I like about the TT Artisan is that it's nicer to handle (if you are a photographer) because it has the clicked aperture and infinity hard stop. I don't think the f/1.2 is so much faster that it makes a big difference ... if you want "super-fast" then you would go all the way to the 7Artisans 35/0.95 instead. But you already own the 35/1.2 ... ? So if you enjoy it, I would maybe just keep it. It should be a nice contrast to your "perfect" Fujinons! The Fujinon pancake 27/2.8 is a very good lens optically. Yes it should be every bit as good as the Fujinon 23/2 or 50/2.
Nog een vraag - When you focus in infinity, from where does infinity start? And - The meters guide on the lens, From whereon do you start counting the meters, from where the lens ends or where it is mounted to the camera? Maybe a stupid question, but would like to know what, thanks in advance Tom.
That’s actually a good question! Here’s the answer: All these measures are from the sensor plane within the camera! Many cameras have a symbol printed on them so you know exactly! (It really is important to know especially for some close-range and macro shots.) Here‘s a link: petapixel.com/2018/07/16/that-weird-symbol-on-your-camera-is-the-film-plane-indicator/
And one last question. The first ring on the ttartisan 35 , what does it mean? The second one I understand, you set the distance where your subject is and it should be in focus. But that very first, where the lens is mounted to the body, 4 left, 4 right etc..?
@@WVMUSIC_NL that’s called a depth of field scale. Below‘s a good info link about how it works. But be aware that these scales are a bit „relaxed“ in the sense that what’s within the depth of field according to the scale, in reality is often already a bit soft in detail! www.fineart-photography.com/dofScale.html
That really depends on what you are looking for. These three lenses differ considerably in speed, size, price and AF/MF. If you want / need AF … then the choice is clear. If you want the smallest lens for travel with very good quality, it’s the f/1.4 … and if you are looking for an ultra-fast lens for low light and the most possible background blur, then get the f/0.95.
My copy the infinity focus hard stop is wrong. I have to stop 1 number before to get it to focus properly based on test shots. How do you fix it so the hard stop works properly? Is it the real tiny screws located in the focus ring and loosening it then moving the infinity back to center from where it should be? Any help would be appreciated.
@@tomscameras Ok, I really loosened the 3 screws but it keeps moving the focus ring when I try to change the infinity position. Seems like those screws don't do anything for me.
@@jasonyoung1999 I am traveling today (have only my analog camera with me) but will try to make a RUclips short video in the next 1-2 days how to adjust infinity on my lens! Hope that will help!
@@tomscameras That would be great since I can't find info regarding this lense and others built the same way. For some reason it won't disengage the focus even after loosening the 3 screws nearly all the way out. Enjoy the rest of your trip.
i assume the focus problem can be fixed in matter of minutes using small flathead screwdriver. very simple fix. had the same problem with my 7art 25mm 1.8 and i corrected it in no time.
@@tomscameras also there is easier way. just unscrew the lens mount, use it as template to cut a ring from a thin cardboard. mark and punch the screw holes. inser the ring between lens and the mount. screw everything back. if your lens still go past infinty just add layers of sticky tape to the rig to make it thicker. this will fix the problem for 99% of chinese lens.
@@tomscameras if the lens dont reach infinty at all adjust at the focus ring if possible. if not possible to adjust the focus ring unscrew the mount and usually there are two thin distance distance rings under it. remove one or two of them. that shoud do the trick. if still not reching infinity only way without moving the lens assembly is to sand down the mount to thin it down on some fine sand paper on flat surface. if THIS does not help throw your lens out of the window. problem solved
I really enjoy your manual lenses reviews! I'm looking for a 23/35mm budget lens, your reviews are really helpful. I use the same camera + grip setup 🙂.
Many thanks for your feedback! I'm very glad that you found some information that is useful for you! This 35mm lens from TT Artisan: I think there's nothing better in this price range! There is a brand new (late 2021) 7Artisans 35/1.4 as well. I haven't shot that one yet ... maybe it's a good alternative! A really nice budget 23mm lens ... sadly there are not that many options, the Kamlan 21/1.8 and the Zonlai 22/1.8: I have a review about the Zonlai. I like it but still I would actually love if TT Artisan would also start making a 22/23mm lens one day!
.grazie
• Anyone whos purchasing or purchased ttartisans 35mm f1.4- it has a 39mm filter thread & if wanting to use filters on front of Lens & you already have filters but larger sized ones, just buy some 'filter step-up rings'..for example: 39-52mm, this may save you money, rather than buying same filter/filters in a 39mm size too. Enjoy! 👍
Yes, thanks for your hint! It would have been great if TT Artisan would use the same filter threads at least where it is easily possible: For example, the 17/1.4 has 40.5mm and this 35/1.4 has 39mm ... but WHY? They easily could have used 40.5mm for both these lenses ...
@tomscameras what ifs don't solve problems.. solutions do. Stepping rings!! I agree, a universal system is a nice dream but the engineering of things require different measurements 😎
@@Stop-All-War You're right: What if's don't solve problems, but still sometimes someone reads it to improve things for the future ... I mean, the newer TT Artisan 25/2, 50/2 and 23/1.4 all share the same 43mm filter threads finally! Whereas the 17/1.4 and 35/1.4 with their odd filter threads are older designs ... I think that could be related to photographers complaining in the past that all these lenses have different filter threads! Having said that, your tipp about the step-up rings is very good, of course! Especially if you intend to use somewhat more expensive filters like high-quality ND filters or polarizers ...
@tomscameras I have a Sigma Art 40mm - 82mm filter thread (ft) & Nikon 28mm - 52mm ft. Ttartisans 35mm - 39mm ft. So, I bought 'step-up rings' of: 39-52mm 52-82mm 3x lenses covered. Step-up rings were 2x £8.
Top!
Hey, bedankt voor de feedback! 22-25 mm … sadly there are less good options out there. Most Chinese lenses in that range are older and pretty basic designs. But did you see my video about the Zonlai 22/1.8? Maybe that lens is also interesting for you: ruclips.net/video/RJSSiAdiHIA/видео.html
@@tomscameras bedankt Tom! I have seen your review but you said it was less good for landscapes. Another option would be the Kamlan 21mm 1.8 which seems to be much better I read on a review and the pergear 25mm 1.8 is praised a lot as well. I wanted to have a sort of iPhone focal length to play with. Maybe 25 would be a better choice?, a little less wide. Do you have some photo examples online taken with the Zonlai?. btw I saw a couple of reviews on the ttartisan 35 including yours and it just arrived this evening. Testing it tomorrow!
Oh ja, ik denk dat de Kamlan ook een goede keuze is! In general, Kamlan is one of the higher quality Chinese manual focus lens brands. But they are also a bit more expensive. I personally also used the Fuji 23/2 a lot and totally loved it. But that lens is 300+ Euros used.
Thanks for the info! Yes I read that pretty often by now, thanks for pointing out! Did you (or anyone else of my viewers) ever really try out adjusting the infinity focus with these small screws? It should be fairly simple ...!
Dimension and weight wise, the 25/2 and 50/2 are absolutely identical !! For street it depends, I’d say the 25 is more universal and easier to zone focus!
hi, I got this lens for XT30-II but when I put this on my cam, and try to take images it doesn't do anything and the cam doesn't take photos. I think I have to make some setting changes, can anyone help, i. am new to this cam n lense as well
There is a menu setting called "Shoot without lens" that needs to be activated. For some weird reason, it is deactivated as default when you get a new Fuji camera! Also see this thread in the DP Review forum, maybe it helps you to locate that setting in your menu: www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4054316
just got mine was looking forward to using it, but the aperture control got stiff and seems to have seized up. Contacting seller about it, sucks I was liking the pictures out of it.
Oh yes, that is a big bummer. Sorry to hear you got these problems. I hope they'll replace your lens soon. I'm going to also order the new 50/1.2 when it becomes available and ofc I hope that they don't have any real QC issues with their manufacturing!
Overall, if I only leave the house with the camera and one single lens, then I prefer the 35, because I like this focal length a lot. The 50/1.2 is best for portraits where I also like it a lot. And the 17 offers wide field-of-view, so if I'm in a tight place like an old city center, I might prefer that one. 35mm on APS-C is too tight (you don't get enough on your frame) in some circumstances. So I can't say just one lens is the best for me :) but again, if I go out of the house and take only one lens out of the three with me, then it almost always would be the 35.
I enjoy your videos quite a lot! I'm looking for a first 35mm prime manual e-mount lens. But there are many brands out there.. TTArtisan, 7Artisan, Peargear, Meike.. is there a winner on these budget lenses? Thank you so much!
Thank you! Well I really can recommend the TT Artisan 35/1.4. The only one (in my opinion) that is really worth to consider here is the new 7Artisans 35/1.4. Most of the other lenses are older designs. And these new Chinese manufactureres learned a lot just in the last few years so the new designs are just much more refined. I did NOT shoot the 7Artisans 35/1.4 so far. Only the "big brother" 35/0.95 which is a different category of lens (superfast, more heavy, more expensive). However I do love that all the TT Artisan lenses have click stops in the aperture. Very good for photography. 7Artisans does NOT have click stops. So basically, if you want to shoot more video than photos, go for the 7Artisans 35/1.4 (no click stops) if you are a photographer and don't care for video, the TT Artisan 35/1.4 would get my vote.
Yes, no one really understands why these two brands have such a similar name ... It seems they really should make infinity setting user adjustable. Cause the idea is very good!
@@tomscameras TTArtisans seems to have been something of a spin-off from 7Artisans. Both companies lens's are manufactured by DJ Optical, but they are two separate companies using the same (independent) factory for production.
Actually, I disagree a bit - especially this 35/1.4 in my opinion is a real gem of a lens, even without having a look at the price! But apart from that, the price of any product is always a very important part of the consideration ... :)
I have an old Sony NEX-5 that comes with a good 18-50mm kit lens. When I tried TTartisans 25mm f2 and 35mm 1.4, that's the time that I fully realized what a sharp image is, which is not being delivered by the Sony kit lens that I am used to. I also used the Canon SX series (big zoom bridge cameras, with non-interchangeable lens) which I thought were of very good quality and character already, but I still enhance the look that it matches my taste. Upon using the TTartisans 25mm f2, I realized that its normal vignette is exactly what I am trying to create when enhancing, also the contrast, together with the sharpness that I never captured before (even when using the DSLR with kit lens and/or prime lens of my friends). TTartisan lenses cost less, and perform better than any other lens I tried, for me to achieve the image that I want. I even like the lens flares of it when stopped down. In one image I captured in a retreat, I used the glare to create an effect of halo above the retreatants.
This lens can create nice bokeh but it is not the most creamy. It uses a classic lens formula so keep that in mind. If you want to see more bokeh shots, also have a look at my written review here: tomscameras.wordpress.com/2020/10/25/image-quality-tt-artisan-35-1-4-for-aps-c-review-part-2/
Love all I see about this lens but the strange thing for me, every review I see, states this lens CAN NOT focus to infinity at wide open!!!!! 5:30 WHY? when design wise, it should be really easy to let a tiny more turn and thus Infinity. In fact, most Samyang/Rokinon (My GoldStandard of Manual lens design) do pass the infinity, that is one fantastic option they provide, to cover minor adapter imperfections, once those lenses are adapted to something else, that I really appreciate. Now Chines being number one copying, why didn't they do that? Or is it some sort of ego thingy: Copy western, Good. Copy So.Korean, Yakkkkk!😱🤔🤣😵😎
The idea of TT Artisan is that the hard stop is right at infinity. If done well, it is a HUGE advantage over having the lens focus "past" infinity such as a Samyang etc. It makes photographing landscapes, night shots, etc. super quick - just move the focus ring to the hard stop and you know it's right at infinity. I am still unsure if the TT Artisan 35/1.4 can be user adjusted. Some people say that it is possible! I did not try yet because actually I'm fine with the way how my lens is factory adjusted, even though it is not 100% perfect it works well for all practical purposes for me. I do really like this feature and prefer it a lot over lenses that deliberatly go past infinity. But you are totally right, it would be great if they could make that more precise, or they should communicate how users can adjust it (like they do with user-adjustable rangefinder coupling on M mount lenses).
@@tomscameras Absolutely. But because I'm practical, I must add: However that is one BIG "IF" that can't be achieved easy so goes the more realistic more visionary approach of Samyang.
@@samsen3965 Have a look at the way how TT Artisan ships their M mount lenses with user-adjustable rangefinder adjustment. Now that's what I call "visionary" :) Maybe we want something like that for these TT Artisan APS-C lenses as well! That the user can easily adjust the stop on the focusing ring!
Depends on the camera model, many older ones were made in Japan, most recent ones apart from the X-Pro3 are made in China as well. It's a global world these days :)
It hits the four c's for me: crazy small, crazy light, crazy sharp, and crazy cheap! This is my 'default' everyday carry on my EOS M50.
Yes, the EOS M50 is a perfect camera as well for this lens. I wish you a lot of fun with it and I agree on the "four c's" !
should i buy this for my Canon R50 ?? (its manual focus right?)
I bought mine some weeks ago and it is my current get out lens on my xt1 for black and white shoots . Great quality for budget investment

Yes, I agree! Even though, for me personally it’s even better than just „good enough“!

Thanks for this review. i plan to get this lens at some point so this was helpful.
Thanks for your comment. Maybe manual focus is a bit slow for slot cars :) but I hope you‘ll enjoy the lens!
Many thanks Paul for your feedback! I'm glad you enjoy the lens, and wish you a lot of fun with it!
Thank you very much for this review. Will be ordering this lens soon for X-E2 :-)
I had 7Artisans 35mm f/1.2 and I did not like aperture ring without clicks (for photography).
7artisans now also released a brand-new 35/0.95 which should be much better than their old small f/1.2, but is also way more heavy and more expensive.
this is very helpful! thank you for the video
You're welcome! I'm glad you like it!
Great review. I’m considering it. Your review helped so much. Thank you
Many thanks for your comment! Have fun with your next lens!
thank you for the review! and also for pointing out severe distortion on Fuji's XC and XF f/2.0 lenses.
Yes, this lens is a real gem and it matches the compact X-E3 and X-E4 bodies perfectly!
I have the 7Artisans 35mm 1.4 and I think it is basically the same lens, really nice.
It’s a different lens from a different manufacturer (even though they have oddly similar names!) but yes, you are right: the optical performance should be similar!
@@tomscameras Yes, that is what I meant.
xe3 user here. im convince to buy this lens 👋🏻
Sounds good! I hope you'll like it as well! :)
i just recieved my copy! fantastic lens. i also had problem with my focus but it is so simple to fix! took me 2 min to correct it from focusing past infinity. for the price its just crazy value! waiting for 50mm and 17mm.
That sounds great! So you got one that focuses past infinity. Mine stops at around 30 or so metres, just short of infinity. But in practice, it's never a problem.
They will ship the 50/1.2 next it seems.
What did you do to adjust the infinity? Do you completely remove the 3 screws from the focus ring? Is there a link or guide on what to do?
Oh thanks, that hood looks great yes!
@@tomscameras Yes, it does.
Petapixel talks about it here:
petapixel.com/2023/09/21/behold-the-power-of-sony-clear-image-zoom-a-feature-nobody-talks-about/
Myself, I don’t use Sony cameras anymore on any regular base so unfortunately I also can’t comment on how good it really works.
Fantastic extensive video. Thank you.
Many thanks for your feedback!
Nice review, I'm exited to try out this lens.
If you like manual focus lenses, I am sure you will like it! Wish you good luck and fun with it!
AS for the lens cap , the push on cap just slides off even just turning the camer upside down. Its now available in Cann RF mount which I bought last week, it has a 39mm filter size but no filter or screw in lens hood will fit !?
Great video. Thank you very much for the review

Hello from Portugal. Nice review Tom. I'm in the market to buy a manual fast lens. My doubts about what lens I'll buy, were disapeared when I saw this video of yours. I have a Canon M50 and I think this lens will match perfectly.
Keep up those good reviews.

@@tomscameras Thanks you. It is clear for me. I thought the lens was not good like the people in the shop who did not know.
i love the lens cap because i was already using filter caps as lens caps for all my 7artisans/canon/nikkor lenses 😂

@@tomscamerasthank you for reviewing this lens. have you tried the 7artisans 35mm f1.4? which one better compared to ttartisan 35mm f1.4? thank you
@@louismaxell I didn’t do a direct comparison, no.
Another great review!!!
I got it for my old NEX. I'm surprised with build quality and beautiful images it produces.
Thanks! Yes it's just amazing how much quality you get these days for so little money! Glad you like the lens!
Hi Tom's Camera, is this lens good for video? Any focus breathing issues?
Hey, I am really sorry! But video is not the scope of my reviews. Having said that I would have a look at other brands for video because the clicked aperture of the TT Artisan lenses is not good for video, whereas for example 7Artisans or Kamlan all have stepless aperture rings …

Hi Thomas what do you think about the new Ttartisan 23mm 1.4? Planning to review this?
Yes, I'm trying to get my hand on one currently and hope I have a review ready in January 2022!
@@tomscameras oh yes looking forward to that!
I did now the scheduling for the upcoming weeks. My review should be out in January 2022!
THANKS !! FOR REVIEW❤
Well, thank you! Glad you liked it! And hope you have fun with your photography!
(It really is important to know especially for some close-range and macro shots.)
Here‘s a link:
petapixel.com/2018/07/16/that-weird-symbol-on-your-camera-is-the-film-plane-indicator/
@@tomscameras so if a subject is 4 meters away from my camera I start measuring from that point on? I found the symbol on my xt100 already:) thankyou!

Sir 1 question hi 6400 ke liye 35 mm0.95 or 35 mm 1.4 or 35 mm1.8 with af konsa better rahega
@@tomscameras thanks sir
My copy the infinity focus hard stop is wrong. I have to stop 1 number before to get it to focus properly based on test shots. How do you fix it so the hard stop works properly? Is it the real tiny screws located in the focus ring and loosening it then moving the infinity back to center from where it should be? Any help would be appreciated.
Yes exactly these screws! There are three screws but usually you can move the ring already when you loosen only two of them!
@@tomscameras Thank you once again.

i assume the focus problem can be fixed in matter of minutes using small flathead screwdriver. very simple fix. had the same problem with my 7art 25mm 1.8 and i corrected it in no time.
Thanks for your info. Yes there are some very small screws in the focus ring. But I didn't try yet to fix it because there's no real need for me.
@@ninjastronghold Your method works as well but only if the lens focuses PAST infinity before it hits the hard stop.
@@tomscameras if the lens dont reach infinty at all adjust at the focus ring if possible. if not possible to adjust the focus ring unscrew the mount and usually there are two thin distance distance rings under it. remove one or two of them. that shoud do the trick. if still not reching infinity only way without moving the lens assembly is to sand down the mount to thin it down on some fine sand paper on flat surface. if THIS does not help throw your lens out of the window. problem solved
if You throw really hard lens should reach infinity :D

I agree, a universal system is a nice dream but the engineering of things require different measurements
😎
@tomscameras I have a Sigma Art 40mm - 82mm filter thread (ft) & Nikon 28mm - 52mm ft. Ttartisans 35mm - 39mm ft.
So, I bought 'step-up rings' of:
39-52mm
52-82mm
3x lenses covered. Step-up rings were 2x £8.
Top!
Hey, bedankt voor de feedback! 22-25 mm … sadly there are less good options out there. Most Chinese lenses in that range are older and pretty basic designs. But did you see my video about the Zonlai 22/1.8? Maybe that lens is also interesting for you:
ruclips.net/video/RJSSiAdiHIA/видео.html
Great lens indeed!
Yes! Actually surprising how much fun you can have with a simple lens like this!
I wish i could have a camera too 🙂. I always watch your video even though i don't have camera hehe.
Thanks for your comment! Glad you enjoy my videos! Maybe one day, you'll get a camera as well :)
Very useful. Thank you.
Thanks, I appreciate your feedback! :)
There are 3 screw for correct setting of focusing to infinity
Thanks for the info! Yes I read that pretty often by now, thanks for pointing out!
Did you (or anyone else of my viewers) ever really try out adjusting the infinity focus with these small screws? It should be fairly simple ...!
So hard deciding between this or the TTartisan 25mm F2 or 50m F2 for street photography. I am leaning towards this despite it being thicker
Dimension and weight wise, the 25/2 and 50/2 are absolutely identical !! For street it depends, I’d say the 25 is more universal and easier to zone focus!
@@tomscameras do you prefer the 25mm f2 over the 23mm 1.4? I have a XF27mm already so maybe getting the 25mm is too similar and I should get the 23mm?
@@matttheoneonly6617 Hey Matt, check out my review of the TT Artisan 25/2. I also compare it directly with the 23/1.4 in that video!
Nice review! Thumb up
Many thanks!
nice catch of view
hi, I got this lens for XT30-II but when I put this on my cam, and try to take images it doesn't do anything and the cam doesn't take photos. I think I have to make some setting changes, can anyone help, i. am new to this cam n lense as well
There is a menu setting called "Shoot without lens" that needs to be activated. For some weird reason, it is deactivated as default when you get a new Fuji camera! Also see this thread in the DP Review forum, maybe it helps you to locate that setting in your menu:
www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4054316
@@tomscameras many thanks🙏
Very nice review. How close does it focus? Thanks
something about 20cm
0.28 metres. (This is camera sensor to object, so about 0.20 metres from the front lens element to object)
just got mine was looking forward to using it, but the aperture control got stiff and seems to have seized up.
Which is better for you the 50mm, 35mm or the 17mm??
Overall, if I only leave the house with the camera and one single lens, then I prefer the 35, because I like this focal length a lot.
The 50/1.2 is best for portraits where I also like it a lot.
And the 17 offers wide field-of-view, so if I'm in a tight place like an old city center, I might prefer that one. 35mm on APS-C is too tight (you don't get enough on your frame) in some circumstances.
So I can't say just one lens is the best for me :) but again, if I go out of the house and take only one lens out of the three with me, then it almost always would be the 35.
Nice example photos.
Many thanks!
Great Video!!
Many thanks!
I bought one for MFT At first I thought it was by 7artisans...Have heard it is not great for infinity setting.
Yes, no one really understands why these two brands have such a similar name ...
It seems they really should make infinity setting user adjustable. Cause the idea is very good!
@@tomscameras TTArtisans seems to have been something of a spin-off from 7Artisans. Both companies lens's are manufactured by DJ Optical, but they are two separate companies using the same (independent) factory for production.
nice explain
Thanks a lot!
Optic is good. One thing i don't like is the aparture ring.
Yes, they're about the best optics of any sub $100 lens ... What do you not like about the aperture ring?
@@tomscameras it is too thin and hard to grep.
maybe a blue screen with flowing lava or swarms of bees might help.
Y sony 6400 ke liye chalega kya batayiye
This lens should be every bit as good on the A6400!
Thanks sir
Like every TT Artisans lens, great lens... "for the price". In other words, no so great but it doesn't cost much.
In one image I captured in a retreat, I used the glare to create an effect of halo above the retreatants.
what about creamy bokeh?
This lens can create nice bokeh but it is not the most creamy. It uses a classic lens formula so keep that in mind. If you want to see more bokeh shots, also have a look at my written review here:
tomscameras.wordpress.com/2020/10/25/image-quality-tt-artisan-35-1-4-for-aps-c-review-part-2/
no video taken?
Sorry, what's exactly your question?
2:37 You have some dirt on your sensor, Or inside lens.
Yes on the sensor :) but it later came off thanks to automatic sensor cleaning!
@@tomscameras i thought that automatic sensor cleaning (vibration) does not actually remove anything.
@@winkzi On my Sony A7R2, I think the same :p but with the Fuji and especially with Olympus cameras, it really works well!
@@tomscameras I turned it off on my xt3, but should maybe turn it back on ! 👍
But because I'm practical, I must add:
However that is one BIG "IF" that can't be achieved easy so goes the more realistic more visionary approach of Samyang.
@@samsen3965 Have a look at the way how TT Artisan ships their M mount lenses with user-adjustable rangefinder adjustment. Now that's what I call "visionary" :)
Maybe we want something like that for these TT Artisan APS-C lenses as well! That the user can easily adjust the stop on the focusing ring!
I got one for $50
wow, that's a bargain! Hope you have fun with it!
@@tomscameras i just received it today. It's perfect for my xe2
that is not TT ARTISAN that is T7 Artisan
What do you mean?
chinese lenses :) And Fuji camera is made in ?? ;)
Depends on the camera model, many older ones were made in Japan, most recent ones apart from the X-Pro3 are made in China as well. It's a global world these days :)
