With my summer canal cruising for 2017 all complete, in this video I sit down by the roaring stove and give a general update on where I am, what I'm up to on the narrowboat and what's coming in future vlogs.

I don't really have an interest in narrowboats, as there aren't any where I live, but your videos are a source of calm and relaxation after a hard day's toil. Keep making these and I'll definitely keep watching and liking.
David, I think your vlog is about everything along the way and the narrowboat is the just the vehicle. The true interest is you and the way you tell a story. A vlog is really just a series of events tied together to create a storyline. You do that very well and even through I will likely never step foot on a narrowboat (I am in Ann Arbor, Michigan USA) I still find the vlog to be one of my top 5 favorites.
What a lovely comment, thank you.
Matt Targett : Me as well. I’m in Holland mi.
Live streams are always entertaining. Don't worry if it's just you, the interaction is always a real plus. As you rightfully pointed out, the video should be uploaded as a regular video afterwards so people who can't tune in still have the chance to see it afterwards. Nothing is more frustrating than receiving a notification from your favorite YT channel to then realize that the live stream has already ended but is not available to watch because the video was not archived. Keep up the great work!
Thank you, I shall take that into account! Cheers
I think you greatly underestimate your ability to live stream a Q&A program on your own. You are a good speaker who organizes thoughts and your humor is so much appreciated. Thank you for keeping me sane.
Thank you
I'm commenting merely because I enjoy your videos and your journey so very much. And now I get to watch another channel, I'm so glad. Thanks for including us in your plans and I'm wishing you good fortune and health for the coming year.
That's very kind and much appreciated. Thank you :-) Best wishes to you too.
Even as a Kansas (USA) landlubber I find your Vlog fascinating. I've watched every one. You do a great job. By the time someone has finished all of your vlogs they know a huge amount about narrowboats and a surprising amount of this information has other applications as well, even in Kansas. I really appreciate the detailed explanations, as do most of your followers.
Thank you! Good to hear :-)
Six years on and I'm still chuckling at your videos. Thank you. I may even go and look at the FAQ page now.😂
Have mercy on your viewers. Yes, we often focus on the vlogs and it seldom comes to mind that you have a blog and other social media platforms where frequently asked questions are answered. But the bottom line is that you are living the dream that we can only vicariously experience; and believe me, we are EXTREMELY GRATEFUL that you do the work while we your fans reap the rewards. I hope that your camper van project goes VERY WELL.
I genuinely appreciate my viewers (most of them), I really do. But since I post the link to the FAQ page on every video description and even at the end of some videos, it didn't seem unreasonable for people to realise it was there, I though. Thanks for the van encouragement :-)
Not naturally fun...my friend you are a natural at this. Engaging, witty and personable.
You might say you're not naturally fun, but your sense of humour is the reason you're my favourite vlogger, even down to the name of the videos
I was just thinking about how to relate the same opinion, but was at a loss for the exact way to word it. Thanks for stepping up
Regardless where you travel next year, I'll be with you. Thanks for the vids.
A hearty soul indeed.
Thank you
You are naturally funny. Don't sell yourself short. At least this over the pond viewer loves your humor.
Thanks for the update! We'd had hints you were busy, and it's great to see what you've been up to the last few weeks. Eagerly looking forward to the classic engine vlog!
Coming soon! (well, after Christmas)
Because I’m watching at 7:30p eastern standard Michigan, USA, I’m having a lovely glass of German wine (tea is for morning for me) with my 🔥 going watching this blog I do enjoy your adventures. Thanks so much. I do think you need a fireside cat.
Mr Bigglesworth style.
Hello from Maryland. Try sleepy time herbal tea.
And happy thanksgiving clare
Clare Friend I'm eating German Chocolate bar as I watch this. I am from Michigan also. Coincidence. Lol
While I don't have a boat of any type I really enjoy your videos. And I get to see some of the English countryside and some towns. I may never get to England so I enjoy seeing it through your eyes.
Thank you, glad you like 'em. Cheers.
I began watching on Amazon Prime about 1 year ago. I ran out of episodes. Now I’ve run into CTC here on RUclips and must admit to being hooked like a whale on an anchor! Why is this vlog so addictive?! I honestly don’t mind. In fact I’m very glad of it. But, I have a feeling that group therapy is on the horizon, folks...
3 years later and 170k subscribers 👍🏻 wow
I made sure I read the comments before I made the same comment. lololol!
how can anyone thumbs down this vlog!!! really enjoying chugging my way through your vlogs, i can honestly say i have enjoyed every single one.
Glad you like them!
David, I sometimes fall asleep at night whilst wondering why and how you make your vlogs so very very engaging. Addictive really. Not that you're a cure for insomnia, no, not at all.
They are like the delightful offspring of a platonic liason between Charles Pooter and Bill Bryson. You can turn quotidian events into real entertainment. So enjoyable. Such talent.Thank you. Never stop. Here's a thing; have you ever added a thin slice of cucumber along with a slice of lemon to your G&T's ? It is delicious. Have a Happy Winter.
What a lovely thing to say, thank you. I've tried the lemon but not the cucumber!
Thanks for all you do David, a live Q & A sounds great, and really looking forward to seeing your van channel, 25,000 ? I suggest all us regular viewers just bring a friend to your amazing channel and job done!!!!
Haha, if my 24k subs all did that then I'd have 48k and be whining about wanting 50!!
I have only recent found this channel. It looks incredibly relaxing to live on the canal. I look forward to working my way through.
Hello,
I have been following your vlog for quite some time now (I hope you are not put off if I confess I usually use your vlog (among others) as a quiet entertainment to while away tea breaks during night shifts in the laboratory).
Being a bit of an engineering enthusiast I am greatly looking forward to the classic engine bit your are announcing!
Keep up the good work. Thanks for all the effort you put into your vlogging.
I think that's the perfect time to watch my vlogs. I hope I can do justice to any engineers watching. You're going to hate the alternator one when I go at it with my hammer... ;--)
I absolutely love these videos, I originally stumbled across your series last spring, and I have anticipated each new release. From here in Ontario, Canada, (where we do not have canals like these), I do enjoy the scenery and slow pace of life that you portray. It makes me want to have a canal boat vacation sometime in either England or Ireland. Please keep them coming. Also, your presentation is top-notch, you hold the viewer til the end and make them want more. Thanks again.
That's very kind, thank you
David, Thank you for all the work you put in to making all your videos which are great entertainment even to a non-boat owner like myself. But they are very varied in their content and that makes them enjoyable to watch. Enjoy your winter.
Steve, thank you very much. Very kind and good to hear.
A live stream or editing video with TheNarrowboatExperience would be ace!
Haha maybe
Anna and Kath from 'The Narrowboat Experience' for you live-stream would be a gas... Your audience is already familiar with them and you have to admit they are sharp as tacks...
They'd show me up for being too slow-witted, can't have them :-)
Here is a thought. If you have a guest for a Q+A vlog, you should have someone to help answer YOUR questions. Is there a project that needs doing but you need help with ? Something you have wanted to learn but not had the time to read up on ? This is your chance to learn right along with the rest of us. Thanks for sharing your journey. - David (DW)
Interesting idea! Thanks
162k subs! You've got the golden key! That's brilliant!
You may be “an old man”, but you look at be a young 20 something. In fact, when I first started watching your channel, I thought you were amazingly well spoken for an youngster. When I later heard you mention you were a journalist, I realized why you were so good with the spoken word. Anyway, I do enjoy your vlogs, especially the details of locks and how they work. And of course, the beautiful green country scenery.
I love how calmly you said "ow. ow." when touching the _coal burning hot stove door_ we stan a true hero 👏
David = “not given to fun” + “formal and straight laced”. I snickered throughout this vlog because of your dry wit and straight faced delivery. This is the hook that keeps me watching your videos. And now I have new channel to subscribe to!
I'm very dull at parties though. Thanks for the other channel sub!
18 months after you released this you have more than 65K subs! Nice work. 👍
So far I've had a hard time putting my finger on why I like these fireside chat videos so much but I think I finally figured it out. You build a sort of gentle anticipation for the winter content and even next year's cruising. It has a really good energy and lowkey motivates me to make vague plans for my own future.
To hear you talk about having 24k subscribers was sweet. Well I am from your future and in June 2020 You have 136,000 subscriptions so well done Sir!
Hear hear!!
And here, even further from the future (well, just a month further), he's up to almost 151K! It definitely says something about the quality and pure enjoyability of the videos!
It is a really nice picture. You not moving all summer long, renaming the channel in "sitting the cut" and making vlogs about feeding the birds... *lol*. No matter where you will go, it will be a pleasure to follow you via vlog.
That certainly sounds like me.
Yes, do the Grand Circle you will enjoy it and loads of thanks for your vlogs so far, they have been excellent.
Thank you
"Not naturally given to fun" but often very funny besides being interesting.
Thank you :-)
I watched it all and enjoyed every minute of it. I do love this channel as I am a boater in the USA. from lakes, river, and the ocean. I live in the south so my accent is true Southern so I enjoy hearing how you describe things and how it differs from how we describe things. Tks for sharing your life and the beautiful scenery you cruise by.
But ya doan soun suthin, jjdog. Ya doan even soun Amurricun neither. Good lawdy, you even said "different from" rathuh than "different than", which still got up up mah dad's nose after being in Amurrica for 50 years. He never started spekin Amurricn. tho, bless him.
It all interests me. ...the up keep, the problems that occur, your methods of caring for your boat home....you have given me an alternative vicarious life, and I thank you.
Wonderful fireside vlog. Sue and I had a cup of tea and a bar of chocolate as we watched. It’s was a wonderful way to pass the time 😊 we’ve got lots to look forward to! We are very excited
An entire bar of choccy - ooo, you little devils.
Please do live Q&A, you dont have to be funny like firecracker lol, just be yourself. Thanks from Finland, love these videos.
Thank you
You have a wonderful dry sense of humor that I enjoy very much. 😊
Love how you have 159k subs by the time I got to this video! You have made me fall in love with the lifestyle. Also, your videos are so relaxing.
Thanks - it was 1 am, but your suggestion of coffee and a chocolate biscuit was exactly the instruction I needed! Really enjoyed your cruise vlog this year, thanks. We took my boat down to Berkhamstead on the Grand Union in the summer (just because I needed to be there for a morris dance weekend!) and back up to South Derbyshire, and had a lovely cruise. I can recommend it - nothing like as busy as I'd feared. Milton Keynes was a delightful revelation.
Good to know - thank you!
Really enjoyed breezing through these vids David...your broadcasting experience shows. 25k subs (at the time of this going out) and now just shy of 180k what excellent growth you've had...well i have plenty to catch up on still... best crack on.
"Not naturally given to fun" haha! Nonetheless the channel is very entertaining and great watching... and I'm not even half way through my quest on this channel or vandemonium :)
Your vlog is a joy to watch. Keep up the good work.
Very kind, thank you
How about Kath and Anna as guests for your Q&A David ? They're a hoot now and then!. You could even do a series of guest RUclips narrowboaters, Country House Gent has an antique power plant for example. I thinnk you have the Parkinson touch and professionalism.
I had planned to film CHG's engine as it happens but he's quite a distance from me and being a bit hopeless I decided it was too far. I'll get him and his Lister-Perkins or whatever it is when he's next nearby!
Your channel is so pleasant to watch!
Hello from Germany, your vlogs are wounderfull. Every time I tell my friends I want to England for few month and live on a narrowboat their answer is still that I´m mad. After a video night with Cruising The Cut they all chance their mind about the weather in UK, german often think its raining 24/7/12. ;)
From City center to city center by boat, locks handled manualy by hand? One of them told me this is a joke. And now I have to answer all the questions when und how I will collect the money I need to chance my boring live and start living on a boat.
Regards Christoph
Sorry for my basic english
Hello. Your English is excellent. I'm pleased you enjoy the videos. Yes, the locks are nearly all manually operated on the canals; there are a few (mostly on the rivers) that are operated with hydraulics and machinery.
Hello David. You always manage to give me a giggle and a smile. Going to sub to your vandamonium now. Looking forward to the build and your vlogs. Chin chin.
I really do appreciate that Annette! Cheers
Very entertaining as always David. Can’t beat a good fireside chat!
Hi , love your cruising , nice to see your trips , I couldn’t live in a narrow boat as I get a bit twitched about water , I know a sad woman but it’s great to watch your journeys , stay safe David ! Regards liz
You certainly know how to stimulate our appetite for the coming goodies. It looks like it's going to be a good winter! And I'm just dying for the vintage engine vlog. That would be my choice for my narrowboat, and I've been noting CountryHouseGent's adventures with interest. So bring it on!
I hate to tell you but that one's a couple of months away, I've still got filming to do for it!
Hi David, Looking forward to what's coming up, in the next few weeks. Anna and Cath , Kevin Shelley would be good for your Q And A. They are brilliant to watch as well. Thanks x
They are indeed.
After building over 75 Hot Rods. You just said it classic each motor has its on character its own quirks it is a work of pure love to build a motor that is 1500 horsepower or 2 horsepower it is a gift to work on any motor it is a work of love and I do enjoy it so. I spend a lot of time polishing the motor and it is a lot of work. Last car I built was a 55 chevy two door post. They are works of art cheers.
So much polishing!
You have a very nice channel. I've been binge watching for quite a while, but I still really enjoy it! As of 1/27/ 2019, I see 52K subscribers! Wow! I'm impressed. :)
I likee your dry sense of humour. Itś a riot!
I'm looking forward to a "Christmas Special" from you David - it would be so lovely. In the face of the negativity and perpetual bad news elsewhere, you lift one's spirit in your genuine, unpretentious authenticity. Thank you for all that you do.
Oh crikey, I don't really have anything planned for a Christmas special, sorry. I know I did the Christmas meal vlog last year but I think it's just going to be a quiet time for me in 2017. There'll still be vlogs of some sort though.
It was just a selfish thought really - something to look forward to, like the BBC's long-abandoned "A Ghost Story for Christmas". Scratch that one, and have a lovely time.
I don't remember that! Cheers
I enjoyed the fireside chat. It was interesting and informative.
Looking forward to the further adventures.
Cheers
Hello David,
Looking forward to the DIY vlogs as I usually just get someone in to do things. I have every tool known to man and they are all unused apart from the ones I have loaned to other narrowboaters.
I've stopped loaning my stuff out, it disappears!
CruisingTheCut Same thing used to happen with my lovely "Self Help" book collection. People get rather attached to stuff we loan out!
True!
We are so glad that we have found you. We find that when the political gets too dark we turn on you Vlog and our blood pressure goes down so keep up the good work. Walt and Judilyn Duba, Morro Bay, California, USA
:-)
It has been a while since you have posted this however it was most informative. Thank-you for posting your FAQ website. Now I don't have to ask a question and making a total arse of myself. Slowly working my way through all your vlogs. I miss England so much and love looking at your cruising vlogs as it reminds me of the time I spent hiking through the Midlands and the lake district when I visited.
It's a very pleasant vlog altogether, I've binged everything (up to this one) over these past three days - it's a meditative exercise and a lovely insight to to a bit of British history. Thanks captain!
You were dreaming of reaching 25-K Subscribers, and you now have reached over 180-K Subscribers! Excellent, always happy to see a success story!
Thank you so much 😀
Its 24/1/2020 as a watch this episode. And you are now on 98900 subs :)
So your channel has grown a bit since this video was made :)
I'm watching daily as at 28/01/2020 99.4K, I like to see great channels hit milestones!
David, really enjoy this vlog. Watch it frequently.
Thanks to you I have started getting into narrow boating and already looking to buy one soon.
Most youtube channels get approx 10% of their sub count in views. ie 10,000 subs = 1,000 views. You seem to get between 80% and 150% of views to subs. So not only can you be toasty warm next to your 24/7 fire but you can be smug about it too !! Good 4 U old bean !! :)
You wouldn't believe just how smug I am ;-)
This is funny given you have 163,000!!!
183,000 in 4/2021
With the van channel I'm going to be busy for days and days! I'm so excited!
Just watched this vlog for the first time, here in April 2024. In late 2017, you were hoping to make 25K by the end of the year, if all went well. Lo and behold, 6 years later and you have a QUARTER OF A MILLION SUBSCRIBERS!!! Guess there's something to be said for narrowboating and your vlogging. Well done!
Thank you
You know you’ve ‘got it bad’ when you’re having to watch 2 year old vlogs just to tide yourself over. On a more serious note, a few years ago I designed what - for me - would be the perfect cruiser, one that would go anywhere from Oxford (my home turf), all the way down the Canal Du Midi to the South of France. It was/is rather beautiful, despite still just being a figment of my imaginings; I might just send you those plans for you to have a laugh at - anyhow - you have now inspired me to do the same for a narrow boat, maxing out at 60’. I will - when complete - send you those plans too, and you can tell me why I’m bonkers. (Apart from not - at the moment - being able to remotely afford such an ensemble of perfection!). Thanks again for such blooming marvellous videos.
I was looking at the canal du midi yesterday. Makes me contemplate on buying a barge instead of a narrow boat. All knew to me this and choosing the boat stage. Any advice on either including getting across to France canal system and which would be better for a combination of uk France, Amsterdam, is very welcome.
It is lovely to watch and listen to an agenda free channel.
well said.
Just picked this one up David in May 2021. Bloody freezing. Coldest May in 25yrs apparently. I hope you are keeping safe and warm. Off to check on your Vandemonium now. Wish me luck.
I can understand why folks asked the questions you have already supplied on other formats. I only started On your RUclips vlogs a couple of months ago, Summer 2021, and as far as I knew that’s all there was. I didn’t even know you were on Facebook! I have come to realize that if I lived in GB I would never have a narrow boat. Those damn locks are exhausting!! But then I’m 87!
Just over 80,000 subscribers by September 2019 = well done. Enjoy the videos
...and now, one year later, 160.7K, so you've doubled it in a year. And what's more, you jumped up from 159+K while I was watching this episode! Great stuff, and well deserved. However, it does concern me, as my current fantasy since finding you a few weeks ago has been to leave everything in Australia, move to the UK and do it myself while I still can.. But if there''s this much interest in narrowboating, I may well have left it too late, and missed the boat, as it were. Has this uptick in interest been noticeable to you since starting a few years ago?
I'm speaking to David here, of course.
Well that's peculiar as RUclips tells me, the channel owner, that I have 157,700 subs so it's odd you're seeing 160.7K. But YT is very random sometimes. There does seem to be more interest but the number of boats registered on the canal doesn't go up that much, it's been hovering around 35,000 for ages
@@CruisingTheCut Today it's reporting 157K to me too. Curious. Still, stellar growth, and evidence of an escapist streak in all of us, which you satisfy in your unpretentious way. Keep on keeping on!
Another great vlog thanks David, when we had our holiday on the cut way back in September 2017 e done the Leicester ring from Warwick. When we went passed Yelvertoft our boat ran out of fuel, We were told that there were a few fuel thieves on the canals especially on the Grand union Leicester branch Have you heard anything on this subject or were the hire company we used trying to cover their own backs by blaming thieves when they could have just overlooked filling the boats fuel tank before we set out on our holiday ?
Hmm. It's not unheard of for people to syphon off the fuel but I don't think it's hugely common; perhaps there are spates of it or blackspots. I went to the bother of having my fuel filler fitted with a padlock but I'm rather paranoid about such things and it seemed like an easy target otherwise.
Hey.....good idea on the tea!! It made me head to the kitchen for a cup.
One should always have a cuppa on the go!
David thank you for the update and what will be coming up in the new year, I do enjoy your posts and am looking forward to the upcoming vlogs. Thank you
Great; thank you.
Dave,
Regarding the live stream... why do you think 25,000 of us are glued to your channel? We watch you because you are who you are, not despite it!
If you want a guest, have a guest but for us, just you is perfectly fine.
Keep up the great work.
Stuart
That's very decent of you, thank you!
I paused this to make a cup of tea and grab a biscuit :)
Good! Quite right too.
Nice van. Very much enjoy watching your videos in South Carolina, USA.
I am a new watcher from Dunedin New Zealand. I find it fascinating and am slightly envious of your life style. I am a UK citizen so you never know for the future. Very entertaining
I think this episode created a record.
I have been amazed at your ability to not ' um and ar ' during your narratives. At least I have not heard them to date. Except in this episode you said ' um ' twice . No seriously, it has been great hearing you talk so professionally.
There remains one spooky thing and that is your ability to not blink ( at least for very long periods ). I tried to out stare you once and failed miserably.
Hahaha. Sorry about those ums :-(
Watching this in March 2020, 113k subs.. :)
a week later and now it's 116k :O
@@Kallinenjp end of march and it is 120k
11th of April it's up to 125 k. 200k before the year is out? I wouldn't bet against it. It's a stonker of a channel, this. I'm now on my, I think, fourth time re-watching the whole lot.
18th April. 127 subs. G'day from Sydney Australia!
21st April, 128k Subs. Hello from Greece.
I've really really enjoyed all your vlogs so thank you for this year!! And I'm looking forward to the following vlogs coming... Cheers!
Thanks Micke!
Gidday from Auckland NZ.
I have thoroughly enjoyed your canal videos.
You present them very well. The scenery is brilliant.
I have started reading about the history of the canal system and how it was a major part of the development of England.
Thanks for the entertainment and keep up the good work.
Will check out your van conversion.
Ernie Mansfield
Hello Ernie, thanks for that. Yes, the canals were the backbone of the industrial revolution until the trains took over.
Ha! 2020 mid-August. You have 6 times the subs you were aiming for!
I do love how these chats are what seem to be single takes, not an edit or splice. My other half watches makeup unboxing vids and there's a badly edited splice every few seconds, most annoying. CTC is just in a league of it's own for production.
As somebody who drives a Campervan all year and actually now posts from it I can only say "go for it". Thanks for sharing your tours for this year and I am looking forward to watch the DIY and fireseide chat videos.
Thank you. I shall do my best!
All of your future blogs sound lovely. I really like the fireside chat, do as many as you can please. I love the idea of a live stream Q&A, alone or with a guest.
There'll be a few more over winter, I'm sure :-)
129k subs now mate - loads of us looking to break free from the "norm". Now the "norm" going forward looks even more blurred I suspect there will be more people realising a different lifestyle is for them.
Rise in wfh makes it a lot more possible for more people to break away.
Well a year on you have doubled your subscribers to 50K (as of Jan 2019) so congrats.
Thank you!
I was about to say the same thing lol
Another great vlog and I hope you have a good and productive winter mooring. Looking forward to your diy vlogs and the van conversion. ATB, Bri
Cheers Bri
Avast! Great show ! Thanks old Bean!
Lol now in lockdown ..your on 129k subs and very well deserved.
All this time after watching perhaps 20 of your vlogs, I had imagined that narrowboat hulls have a keel. Instead, from the glimpse of the construction, it looks like is the bottom is not only flat, but as flat as the floor at the fabricator. I suppose that is fine and it has been working well enough for 250 years. I just didn't expect to see that.
Your channel appeals to me because I am myself retired and intend in June join what we here in the US call the RV life. The RV equivalent of your routine is called dry camping and relies on no outside resources (water, power and waste water) to get through the night (the situation is sometimes referred to as being off-grid). As near as I can tell, there is not a single RV manufactured since the beginning of time that does not have some form of power generator. One glaring thing I noticed is your vlog never makes any mention of an onboard generator.
I am widowed and will be traveling alone with my dog. The solitary life will not be a hardship because I have been living the bachelor life for almost 4 years already. Thanks for the inspiration.
Completely flat bottoms apart from a handful which have a slight V shape but this is uncommon. The engine is often used as the generator though many boaters do carry a separate generator too. My solar panels generally meet my needs.
David, as always a fine production! Looking forward to your van project as well. Stay safe!
Thank you
I had to laugh at the part about reading the FAQ before asking a question, guilty. I felt like you were talking to me. I have read it and refer to it often. That being said, thank you for answering my questions, you are very kind.
