- In June, SpaceX CEO Elon Must tweeted that Starlink's default SSID Wi-Fi name would default to 'STINKY' to encourage customers to change their Wi-Fi network name.
It seems this wasn't a joke, and now new Starlink routers are shipping with the SSID set to STINKY. This also happens when a router is factory reset.
Learn how to change your SSID back to a less odorous name.

This tripped me up this weekend after a power outage. I thought my router was dead and ordered a new one. I’m actually ok with having a spare. I bought the travel case and an extra 75’ wire so I can now just pull the dish when I travel. Boy was it hard to find customer service. You have to go to any frequently asked question and give it a thumbs down to start a service ticket. Hell of a place to hide it.
I was setting up today for the first time and spent a couple hours trying to get it to work. I saw STINKY on the list of available WiFi connections with no password but I thought it was a neighbor. After I gave up, I thought that maybe a disgruntled Starlink employee had renamed the default, so I performed a Google search and that brought me here. Thanks, Elon. 🤦🏼♂️
This was very helpful. Thank you! We had our Starlink reset itself yesterday and had no idea what Stinky was lol
Thank you so much!! Once I watched this I was able to set up with no problem. Prior to watching this we were laughing at whatever neighbor had named their WiFi stinky 😅 then found out it was us!
I live in Missouri and ordered the best effort plan. I was surprised it was named Stinky. I quickly changed that to Skynet. At least someone at SpaceX has a sense of humor,
Thank you!!! I just spent 2 hours trying to figure out why my starlink wasn't showing up. Lmao
Thanks for this I was very worried at what might have happened to my Wi-Fi network
Gee. I was looking for Starlink. Seems like this shouldn't be this difficult - or stupid. Thanks. Why would I ever click on a network labeled 'Stinky'?
I was confused when my dishy showed up today and I didn't see a "Starlink" SSID but for some reason there was a "Stinky" network. It took me a minute to figure out that was the starlink network.
that's poor hygiene to have not already removed defaults
it would be helpful to see some troubleshooting and mounting videos for Starlink
Good information
Gracias, for the info!
this was helpful.. mine was delivered with "stinky". i thought it was one of the neighbors wifi or something was wrong with the unit..
OMG, I I was T/S my Starlink and had to reset it and I never found my Starlink SSID name, Thanks for your help. This was really dumb move by them., I saw the Stinky wifi but never thought that this was it.
It would be nice for them to include instructions. I had to look up this video after an hour, for initial setup
Yeah those picture instructions are ridiculous...
Thank you! I thought my stinky neighbor had stolen my network.
Happen to me... Where did it go.. I lost it and couldnt find it.. resetting it many times before seeing this name...
So my my starlink just randomly disconnected and came back up as just starlink and as just a open unsecured network, how do I change it back to what it was before cause now there no password either the old network name and network was there however but obviously didn't work
Hey. I’m having the same issue. Did you figure it out?
@Maria Sol Ricart Pacheco hey yeah I did, I had to log into my Star link account link it to the app or whatever and you should be able to just change it back to whatever and have the password along with a secure network again.
I’m setting up but no network even shows up
No stinky
No starlink
Thought I was crazy for a minute lol
Ugh 😑 I even had mine changed and now it reset to stinky…
I’m waiting for “Twitter Sucks” Elon is the best!! 😂
how to hide SSID STARLINK ROUTER
Notice he didn't call it STINKY MUSK
Something smells "stinky" around here.
