It's sort of a sideways question. I'm really interested in this Winckelmann character and if there are differences between art historians and art critics. Did the two jobs start as one and split? Are they still the same? Is there a pantheon of art historians and critics who are major players in developing the art history canon? Is there an art history canon? Thank you for making my lunch breaks so educational!
Angelina, glad you enjoy the videos! These are some great questions. Although there is certainly some overlap, art historians generally are looking at the context and meaning around art pieces, movements, and periods whereas critics are strictly analyzing whether one piece is good or not. For example, Winckelmann was studying ancient Roman and Greek art in historical context and finding meaning that was applied to Neoclassicism. I'm sure he acted as a "critic" at times in deciding what made that art good, but he was doing so in a more historical context. Here's a good article on famous art historians: blog.academyart.edu/7-famous-art-historians-who-changed-the-field/ Some of these historians are also considered critics. In regards to art history canon, there doesn't seem to be a well established canon. Generally historians will agree on important literature within art history, and art history books often have the same important artworks related to movements or periods. But there is not a well-defined art history canon. Literature and important artworks will differ quite a bit depending on who you talk to within art history. Hope this helps!
It seems that the the neoclassical period in art coincided with the romantic era in literature. These two trends seem antithetical. Can you shed some light on this apparent contradiction?
Every time I read a chapter in my art history book, I then go and watch your video on the subject which has helped me TREMENDOUSLY and given me SO MUCH more understanding
It's funny studying art history at scale because it's like wait, didn't you guys JUST rediscover classical culture? But it had already been ~300 years.
Do you make digital art history flash cards that we could access to learn more? On web apps like quizlet, brainscape etc. Would love to get better at recognizing art movements and which artists did which works!
Thanks 😊 Yes, I'm planning to get to symbolist art. It's difficult to pick my content as there are so many great movements, artists, and artworks throughout history!
hi great video. if it's really ornate but features classical designs like ionic columns and scenes from greek mythology is it neoclassical or rococco or baroque? thanks./ ps theres a video i did earlier on here im trying to figure out if i incorrectly called it neoclassical.
Yes! It was painted during the height of Neoclassicism. The subject matter, the tight/clean brushstrokes, and the colors make it very much Neoclasical.
@@ArtHistorywithAlder thank you for the quick response, you seriously made me happy. The painting is based on the odyssey, could this also be a characteristic that I can use to motivate my answer to the question “what style does it belong to, how can you tell and name the features of the particular style that caused you to come to your decision”
@@user-nn5rp7jw2h yes, not specifically because of the Odyssey story itself, but because the Odyssey is a part of Greek myth and culture. Neoclassists returned to these Greek and Roman morals and ideas, so they often used or portrayed their stories in art.
@@ArtHistorywithAlder thank you ❤️ I am working on a report about artwork based on the Odyssey for school. You really helped me I will now continue with the information you shared. I might have other questions later on :)
What questions or comments do you have about the Neoclassical art period?

What is your favourite and most significant painting from the neoclassical period ?
is the painting Helen Recognizing Telemachus by Jean-Jacques Lagrenée also neoclassical art?
Yes! It was painted during the height of Neoclassicism. The subject matter, the tight/clean brushstrokes, and the colors make it very much Neoclasical.

This period's art is the pinnacle of human art. After this it was all downhill.
We can't hear yr voice properly
Ypu ate bor used to hearing the human voice naturally, unenhanced.I can hear her fine
Well I hate it. I like rococo and baroque way more you know how they say: dululu is the sololo😂
Nah it’s way better than degenerate art like Dadaism and bauahauss
