    Well worth blowing 140,000 Avios for. Save hard!
    Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Next trip report is American Airlines 767-300 in business class down to Miami... and after that a real mix! Flying every legacy US carrier in their premium cabin, plus taking in budget heroes Frontier and Spirit. Exciting stuff... stay tuned. 😊

      I'd love to hear your points strategy Paul. Do you focus on Avios specifically or something else like AMEX ?

      Clubcard and flying basically. I don’t play with credit cards.

    • @MattNav
      @MattNav 5 лет назад +4

      @@Paul_Lucas nice. I wish we had something like clubcard points here in mainland Europe. For me, my AMEX gold card is my main source of points income even though I can only transfer them to airlines at a 5:4 ratio.
      Other than that I try and collect with BA Avios, KLM Flying Blue and most importantly Alaska airlines miles. Cashed my Alaska miles recently so I can fly Cathay Pacific business class from Dublin to Hong Kong in December for the first time and I can't wait to see what it's like 😁
      42,500 Alaska miles is enough for Europe to HKG in biz
      70,000 for Cathay first from USA all the way to South Africa with a free stopover in HKG for as long as you want

      If you're in the U.S.A., I really don't blame you. The only thing worse than the airport experience is what you must put up with In the air. If you're flying first, you're experiencing what coach travel in the U.S. was like years ago, when passengers were considered to be "guests". "Guests" who dressed-up for the occasion. Seats weren't torture devices banned by the Geneva Convention, and the fares were reasonable. Now that Virgin America is gone, domestic flying is to be shunned. But, if you want to travel overseas, I still recommend flying. Most of the Far Eastern and Middle Eastern carriers still have respect for their customers. And, treat them that way.

    • @EinkOLED
      @EinkOLED 5 лет назад +10

      Your fear is stopping you from visiting some amazing places. There's nothing to fear, it is the safest form of transport in the world. You will die not accomplishing your goal, so please, please get on a plane. It is nothing special or scary about it.

    • @johnpinckney4979
      @johnpinckney4979 5 лет назад +2

      Renaissanceman… I beg to disagree with you on the "And the pilots (there are always two for safety) want to get there in one piece too " as I can think of two cases where that wasn't the case. Exceptions to the rule? Perhaps. One is still fresh in mind. Of the airlines still in business, I can recommend Alaska, JetBlue, Icelandair, Air Canada, and El Al. Of U.S. airports, perhaps the best is LAX with the worst being almost any other. However, Midway has a degree of distinction in that regard. Of the European ones I've been to, Findel in Luxembourg is a standout in quality. Pity it's under utilized.

    • @johnpinckney4979
      @johnpinckney4979 5 лет назад

      Ray Martin: You're right. It's the safest it's ever been. At least in the U.S. and Europe. But, the experience is nowhere near as pleasant as it was back then. I flew in "the back of the bus" frequently from 1965-2001. And, annually from 2001-2013... but haven't even set foot in an airport terminal except to rent a car (the hours are more convenient than any other location) since. I have driven cross-country solo every year since 2013. Except for being stuck with a domestic when going to Alaska or Hawaii, if I fly again from the U.S., it'll be international on a non-U.S. carrier. The xenophobic protectionism on U.S. domestic routes and the difficulty of entry and business longevity for a new entrant has made the U.S. carriers (and too many of their employees) not only institutionally complacent, but to an almost sadistic degree. United at IAD is the most hideous example.

    I have to say that the thing I appreciate most about you, and your reports, is how real and honest you are. There are so many travelers out there that seem to often, or always, expect over the top service/amenities and/or even complain at the lack of such things. You are always honest, and no matter what, you find something positive to share about your experience, even if we can see it was not really one overall.
    Another thing you do is always remind your viewers that there are other ways to gain access to travel like this, not just money, and it is very much appreciated as most of us are clueless on that aspect, not to mention could not afford it all out right. I will say I would love to see a video from you breaking down how it all works, such as the rewards and perks of club cards, points, miles, etc..
    So a huge thank you for being such a grounded traveler while showing us such diverse ways to travel, which is rarely something others do. Most only show high end, be it flights or trains. I for one appreciate the economic way of travel as much as I do first class, as it all matters and each can give you a great experience in some way.
    Looking forward to more videos :)

      I'd prefer Qatar business class. NEver flew first class lol, I think even I was millionaire I'd still fly business. Something like 20 000$ per flight seems too insane, I better donate money to old poor people. Im pretty 100% honest in it. But for the sake of review using miles I could sure try first class, lol.

    In 2017 I flew Cathay RT from ORD to HKG, best coach ever! I preordered Indian vegan meals, they were absolutely delicious and the best IFE of any airline I've ever used! I dont fly enough to get the kind of pts to cash out a First or even Business class flight but if I ever get enough cash to fly that route in a premium seat, I wont hesistate! The only thing about Cathay I can knock is they seem to fly through some nasty turbulence when I'm trying to eat! I'm glad I'm not the only one to experience that, Paul!

    Paul, it goes without saying that your videos are excellent. They also demonstrate the difference between rail 'journeys' and air 'travel'. No one takes a cruise or a journey by air. There's nothing to describe except videos of airline food, rest rooms, lounges, even if it includes the Taj Mahal of lounges, which is a lot of excess for comfortable seats . The rail experience is that of the sights, sounds and adventures of a journey, of history, of meeting and communicating with people, a shared experience. The railway itineraries represent actual physical locations, which itself has a history, and not some three dimensional space that one is passing through. And passing through without any sense of doing so.
    Those who find it among the greatest of joys to attend a week of seminars on the topic of plastics will find air travel to be pure heaven. I know...I know...it gets you from A to B in the shortest time. However, when the best feature is having the facilities to spend as much time as possible sleeping, well, that kind of says it all.

    Sounds a great experience & glad you enjoyed it so much 😂👍 One of my few experiences of flying First Class on Cathay was when I was booked in Business with my boss (we usually flew Business on flights over a certain length), but one of the other passengers travelling First was a major corporate client & he wished to sit next to my boss, so we switched seat and for that flight I became rather a well-known & wealthy Singapore Chinese businessperson - not a bad switch for a few hours 😉👍

    Great report Paul. I love the CX F pajamas, I actually have them on right now when typing this, they are so comfortable.
    The Pier lounge is my favorite lounge in the world, the main reason I keep my BA gold status is to visit there and enjoy it a few hours before a flight.
    Always hard to film on night flights with the low light, but some great footage.
    Shame you don't like Champagne that much, but the Krug is a great bottle to be served on flights, though I did prefer when JL Served Salon on their First class flights.
    And the Caviar service is always wonderful.
    The amenity does need an upgrade though, the products inside are not high quality enough for First, and its needs a bit more added to it when comparing to other airlines.
    All of the food looked great, I really liked the look of the food on the second leg YVR-JFK, the crab started and Steak looked excellent.
    After all of that , Cathay shows how they might not be the most glitzy airline or have all the bits that go with it, but they have a consistently excellent first class product, as I can agree that my CX F flights have been some of the best in the world I have ever had.
    Thanks for Sharing Paul.

      I know that CX has been struggling to make a profit for the last few years, which is a real shame.
      Notice how their A350's don't have first class, so I think there is a high possibility of CX removing all first class from their planes in order to pack in more Business class seats.

    • @RB747domme
      @RB747domme 5 лет назад

      When I Travel The World if anything, CX might follow other premier large Airlines, and keep first class for Premium routes that are always busy.
      British Airways have done this, of late, leaving business class on lesser routes, and keeping first class on their busy premium routes.
      Premium routes will always be Hong Kong - London, New York - London, LA - London, and London, Dubai, Hong Kong, Australia, and Hong Kong to LA.
      I would imagine that shorter Direct routes centred around the Pacific Basin may just stick to 2 class cabins.
      It's always a great shame when an airline removes a cabin in order to increase flight revenue, but I suppose the accountant's will always be in charge of airline operations.
      I adore Cathay Pacific, and whenever I fly to the Far East, and down to Sydney or Melbourne, I always choose Cathay, as they are my favourite far Eastern airline.
      I mostly fly business class, as I can't afford to always fly first, but when I do have the opportunity to upgrade to first I always try to if I can.

    I've flown Cathay countless times, I remember the 747's and I recently flew on the A350, I used to live in Hong Kong and return every single summer, Cathay Pacific was just the icing to the delicious cake which is Hong Kong. An Airline should reflect its home and that is EXACTLY what Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon (Draginair) do.

    Haha Paul in a bath tub! I would say that this video shows that a good first class product is not only about a good seat/suite, but the overall experience. And the fillet of beef 🥩 - amazing, wondering how they made that, since they don’t cook on board as far as I know. Do they stock well-done fillets, too?

    • @Paul_Lucas
      @Paul_Lucas  5 лет назад +1

      That’s a good question. I don’t know about the beef, but they did ask me how I’d like it and it did come out how I wanted. Maybe they do stock various fillets of different grades of cooking.

      Paul, filets and tenderloins are simply seared on the grill in the flight kitchen and boarded nearly raw on the aircraft, thus allowing the trained galley flight attendant to finish off the steak in the convection oven according to the passenger's desired degree of preparation.

    • @RB747domme
      @RB747domme 5 лет назад

      travelmentary TV just to add to what others have said, a few premium operators, do have Galley staff that cook on board in premier classes. The steaks are slightly pre-cooked and then by the finished off in convection ovens, or finished off in specially prepared searing trays in the Galley in order to cook them through to completion as you like.

    • @reohtz4878
      @reohtz4878 5 лет назад

      Clint Tapper, when I began flying back in the early eighties, we cooked eggs to order in first class. When I was laid off for 6 weeks due to a machinist strike, I worked in the first class pantry where we prepared all the meals served on the flights still operating. I had culinary experience and thus was placed in that position. I cooked the filets 25 seconds on each side as they were to be finished onboard in the convection ovens.

    CX's performance, service and overall value-for-money have become a meme among Hongkongers haha
    I guess as long as one doesn't have to pay for their Business or 1st Class experience with real cash, one tends to be more lenient and forgiving :P
    Otherwise it hasn't been too kind to their junior staff of late and for Economy they even plan on further squeezing the seat arrangements to 3-4-3 from 3-3-3 . . . the whole business just smells of incompetence and austerity 😂
    That said, to me CX still remains the first sight of home when boarding a direct flight back home, and I guess that's the source of my fellow Hongkongers' love-hate for the brand :)

      To be fair, Cathay is still FAR better than 99% of the airlines around the world no matter what class you are flying on. The only real competitors on par with or above Cathay would be Singapore, ANA, as well as the big three middle eastern airlines. Airlines in Europe and NA are complete jokes compared to these airlines.

      Sheila that's a shame, Sheila. How many times have you flown on Cathay? Do you think you were perhaps unlucky on that particular flight, or those flights, or is it possible that their service fluctuates?.. I've flown on Cathay in all three cabins, and I have to say that the staff were always attentive, even on the flights when I was flying economy. I might have just been fortunate I guess.
      I can't speak for every flight, obviously, and it's possible that their service might have just been better on the particular flights that I had.
      Cathay have a very good reputation for looking after their customers, and I hope that their service doesn't go down in future years because it would be a great shame for such a great airline.
      Anyway, Sheila, I wish you good travels whichever airline you fly in the future, and it would be interesting for you (if you are ever lucky enough, to have the chance) to experience business class on Cathay Pacific, and see how it compares to your economy flights.
