  • I looked up this knife and it is an Imperial Barlow knife made in Providence, Rode Island. The most I can narrow down when it was made is between 1956 and 1988. In 1988 Imperial bought Schrade and starting stamping that on the blades. If anyone knows more about this knife I would love to hear about it.

You did a great job at shining it back up! I think your friend will be impressed with it.
One of the cool things to do with old carbon steel blades, get the rust off but leave all the stains. (Patina). Just a different cool look.

Nice job. I have about 20 imperials / colonials that I’ve restored/ refurbished. They did make the same style for many years, but you can narrow down the dates based on how Imperial Prov. RI USA is stamped on the primary blade.

I remember those being $2.99 in the 80s and about half wearing like butter. You had to keep buying until you found a good one.

Awesome work Jon, the ole Barlow is restored to its former glory! You had me cracking up when that piece of lint popped out, and when you were musing about how many pockets that had been in haha.

Thanks man! It was really hard to sharpen but I looked it up and that’s just the way they are because it’s actually high quality steel. Haha yeah the lint kinda blew my mind for some reason

You should have saved a little time, and bought some 180 grit, and 320 grit. To take care of some of that rough work.
    Hindsight is always 20/20 though.

I just opened up a brand new made in China imperial Barlow with the hollow plastic covers. One of the covers already has a crack at the pin. Wth? Hard to be happy when it comes broken new. The blades have a good snap tho. I might try removing the covers and replacing them with something else. Might end up in the trash too lol.
