    One of the best pop songs of the 80s. It might even be the B-52's greatest single. "Love Shack" is a bit overplayed, but this one remains fresh.
    Both of these songs are, of course, from the Cosmic Thing album. And I mention this because that album also includes one of their most
    underrated and ignored deep cuts, "Topaz". I think that song is as good as anything they ever did. Check it out!

      You could name anything on their Time Capsule CD as their best and I wouldn't argue.
      And I love "Topaz" too, as well as "Follow Your Bliss".

      100% agree about this song, which I much prefer to Love Shack, which I loved at first, but sadly can't stand now, so overplayed did it become.

    I believe it's Kate singing the 1st verse and Cindy the 2nd. Quite amazing that their voices sound so similar that they create a modulation effect when they sing the same melody together 🤩
    And I hadn't liked the B-52's at all at first, with 'Rock Lobster' and 'Planet Claire' as my first impression in the late 80's, until I finally realised years later that they're all about Fun and not to be taken too seriously 😅
    I love them now 😊

    Their first album after Ricky's death (RIP), it's a little more "commercial" than their usual stuff, but it's really freakin' good. "Dead Beat Club" is my favorite track from the album, but it was "Love Shack" that really vaulted them into the stratosphere.

    One of those bands guaranteed to lift your mood - the Go! Team are another and I can't recommend them highly enough. Recently I discovered the B52s album Bouncing Off The Satellites, put together by Tony Mansfield of New Musik fame from bits and pieces the band had recorded before the untimely death of their guitarist, and it is stunning.

    Sarah Lee (Gang of Four, Robyn Hitchcock, Ani DiFranco, Thompson Twins, and one of Fripp's League of Gentlemen), just a fantastic bass player. Also, Cosmic Thing is one of those rare things, a perfect pop album that elevated a great indie band to further heights of greatness. Nile Rodgers' production all over this one. '89 was a great year for music.

    Great tee-shirt first of all, Justin! Glad to see you return to the B-52s. This is a great track, always puts me in a good mood too. The rest of the album's fantastic - have you listened to 'Love Shack' yet? That was the other huge hit. This was a bit of a comeback album for the band, the first since the death of guitarist Ricky Wilson. The band's drummer Keith Strickland stepped up and took over guitar duties from here on - and does a really fine job in my view.
    Keith told Rolling Stone that he wanted to keep some connection with what Ricky had done. "He was a very key ingredient in our sound, and I just didn't want that to disappear. I knew that once we started playing live, there'd be older material to play, and if we got somebody else, I'd have to be there giving them a lot of hints, like the tunings and everything. So I figured I'd just do it myself. I knew enough that I thought I could do it. Well, I was hoping I could do it."

  • @sicko_the_ew
    @sicko_the_ew 5 месяцев назад +3

    Watch the video for this (because at adds some fun to the fun). I'd say it's a kind of B52 recurrent theme of something like, "Mock Ignorance", where they play at having e.g. no geographic knowledge. (The song Mesopotamia plays at the "ignorance of history" angle - which is also fun - who needs history, really). I don't want to say too much about it.
    More B52's now is easy now? Just spin up Rock Lobster again, and maybe hop around the garden on one leg at the same time.

    Like a hell of a lot of B52s songs, this is something pretty smart and subversive pretending to be dumb. 'Roam around the world' 'hip to hip' and other lyrics are all gay slang for sex acts. It's a tribute to band mate and Cindy's brother, Ricky who died from AIDS in 1985. On the top level, its a fun song about going around the world, on another level it's a load of filthy references cleverly snuck into a mainstream song, on a third level, it's actually about death and rather poignant.
