I had the rare honor of performing this masterpiece as part of the chorus in 1979 in Atlanta, GA. Here are some of the details: Robert Shaw conducting the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra The Atlanta Symphony Chorus The Ohio State University Symphonic Chorus and Chorale (I sang 2nd bass in chorus # 2 of 2 double choruses) Florida State University Symphonic Chorus and Chorale. Three children's choirs Eight Soloists Antiphonal Brass sections located in the balconies There were 814 people on stage! While I would have loved to have worked with Leonard Bernstein, this performance was truly a privilege!
Robert Shaw was a master musician, especially with the choir stuff, i think has never been surpassed. There is some incredible clinics with choir mudic here on youtube, where he leads semiprofessional choirs, which are very interesting and stunning. Forenstens Hindemiths Requiem, which he himself ordered by the composer.
This Mahler musical work had been used as example in the italian youtube cultural video "Lezioni di Musica - Survivorship Bias" of the channel "musicamonteverde". A really very very interesting video of this interesting new channel about music!
+Mahler Brahms It might alas be that Leonard Bernstein is no longer the "fashion." Great pity if that's the case. Bernstein is totally in his element with Mahler. I can hear Mahler in some of Bernstein's own compositions.
