Imagine being the woman whose book she picked My Dark Vanessa for her book club selection. Only to have the decision reversed. Thats got be a wrenching feeling.
The fact that she didn't choose "My Dark Vanessa" due to backlash, is a bunch of trash. She needs to pick the books she wants and likes not the books people says she needs to pick.
It is all about the energy it took to humble herself previously. Book Club is supposed to explore the books not get people triggered before the discussion even happens
People need to know that this is just one story and not make the assumption that it represents that of entire communities. There are many different kinds of immigrant stories -- doesn't mean it didn't happen and could've happened, but we need to know that about novels... it's just one story. We need to have the intelligence and the distinction to understand one particular case and its viewpoint from the writer or whoever's testimony it stems from. There are thousands of immigrant experiences and we can't limit telling just the positives and hide/ shield the realities of other experiences just because its seen as a negative. History and reality is not always attractive and if we keep getting offended by literature that is not meant to be disrespectful, then that is a testament to how far we need to go to confront our insecurities.
I so agree. Threatening someone who has every right to write whatever story they want to tell is ridiculous. Are you mad because someone non-Hispanic wrote the story or because Oprah's backing means it will sell.
Wow she actually said she is GUILTY of doing something that she feels she may have chosen to do enough of. If only she had done that when she was duped by Stephen Frey but she's in a different headspace now.
I read the book, it is so authentic and powerful to me. compare with the horrible story about how North Korea people to risky their life escape from their country and try to cross over South Korea to seek for asylum. Same horrendous, brutal! I appreciate the author be able to tell this story to the world , thank you !!!
People need to understand that it is just one story and not a summarization of an entire community. It should be taken and be treated as such. The details of the book could've happened but also mean that it didn't happen.
I don’t think it’s only about the context of the book but rather the platform she allows to a non Mexican to profit from real struggles and pain. It’s like a white person writing a fiction book about African American struggles. She wouldn’t do that.
I highly dislike the concept of Oprah and her book club, but good for her. And why does anyone care about what she chooses or not? It’s her gig. Finally, if you’re “sick of white people telling your story” then write it yourself.
Oprah should continue to choose the books SHE is interested in for her book club. Wow--What an easy answer! Those ladies are free to start their own book club with books written by latina writers only. Problem solved.
@Ado rable Integrity ha? Tell that to the black community that she continuously uses while being in the pockets of white moguls. There is a reason why her prime demographic is middle aged white women and not of her own people.
@Ado rable I can respect that. I am not sure this specific book if she read or not. It's not something I'd be able to debate, but I recall an occasion that she was being questioned about controversial books that made the club and she sidestepped by saying she did not read.. As someone I used to respect, after seeing what she did to Mo'Nique, Michael Jackson, and using other black families as the examples of negativity while at the same time she would not address the Harvey Weinstein issue (though it's been public knowledge for decades).. It's hard to trust her voice on many levels.
My question to the lady on the panel that accused Oprah of not choosing any authors of Mexican/ American descent would be: When have Mexicans, or Mexican Americans EVER celebrated anything African American? The entire world, including Africans, view African Americans as one BIG stereotype, so please don't play downtrodden victim to us lady.
Chi-Chi Proud 2 Be Igbo That is an ignorant and really bigoted statement. I live in a 47 percent Hispanic Neighborhood.guess who is In the school to prison pathway, here. You might want to read some actual real history.
Oh please, at the Oscars a couple of years ago, black actors complained African American actors did not have a high enough presence and did not appear in good movie/tv roles and now they are everywhere. Most all game show hosts are black. So quit bringing the black thing up. If everyone of different ethnicities (there are about 64 of them) complained that much, we would have to get different movie/tv: Latino countries, Chinese, Japanese, etc. etc. etc. We are a human race and while African Americans complain, we will always be divided. Welcome to the human race, period.
ichi1957 while Asians and Latinos willingly left their countries and moved to the USA, African Americans were brutally forced out of Africa, moved to the US to work as slaves for generations. They built USA. So don’t fault them for demanding their fair share.
Gilbert Brave. Where were they even talking about African Americans or Asians? That's the problem these days we talk about one race and someone has to bring up but what about the African Americans and make it about them. It's very sad what happened to African Americans back then but you can't bring it up on every subject that doesn't pertain to what's being said. This Mexican American author just told oprah the truth, point blank.
I think is Julissa Arce the one who accused Oprah of discrimination because Oprah hasn't picked any mexican- american author for her book club. Well, This woman is guilty of doing the same thing. She is excluding the rest of Latin-America with her comment and that happens a lot with Mexicans. I have been invited to latin clubs, hispanic fairs and conferences. At the end, they are not Hispanic or latin meetings: They are mexican meetings. Mexicans do that all the time and actually Mexicans are the ones that give us bad reputation to the whole latin-america. Well, maybe the Mexican-American books are not so good and that is why they are not in Oprah's book club. Conclusion: I guess Oprah is racist too! (I am just being sarcastic).

The most controversial book she endorsed was The Secret.
Would you say more than James Frey's a million little pieces?
Motheo Letsatle at least that book didn’t brainwash millions.
The secret to sum it up is "The Golden Rule," to the 10th degree.

She doesn't read many of the books in her 'book club', its sponsored advertising.
How do you know?
@@paulg6527 Shes admitted it herseldf when asked detail on various books.
Oprah reads every book she had in her book club. Maybe you have some evidence of something else. Didn't think so. You mean you don't read much.
