    • @yzolakitchi
      @yzolakitchi Год назад +19

      Yes, I loved her metaphor and agree with you. Perhaps it's more a case of the new owners living with the old owners in the interim. Blame for dodgy wiring get's thrown in the face of those who seemingly had no idea what they were doing. I don't see how the constant overlap of generations can't cause conflict in society. The battling cries of "You have it easy, these days" countered by, "Did you really not think discrimination was a bad thing?" Building those bridges, as Isabel says, is never gonna be complete, but awareness of past issues and moving forward to change things for the better, for everyone, has got to be the way to go. I try to remain a pragmatic optimist - but it's not always easy 🙂

Her books are very readable, insightful, and shocking at times - shocking for me, as a white human, because I was so ignorant of important, entrenched aspects of the US that cannot be denied. And, as Wilkerson says, how the system was so arbitrarily created. The house is in shambles, and it's infuriating that so many extremists will avoid looking at the flooded basement - any trying to prevent others to do so - at all costs.

    One of the best interviews I have seen in recent years. Ms. Wilkerson is an amazing author whose work in her two books I have read made a lifelong impact.

    The way returning African-American soldiers were treated after WW2 is truly one of America's worst mistakes. They were heroes of a whole nother level. The saddest thing is we still haven't learned the lesson because look how we treat immigrants who joined up and went to war in Iraq and Afghanistan and they were deported instead of making them citizens like they were promised.

    Caste is probably the best book I read this year. Eloquently written and heroically researched, she creates a genuine synthesis by tying together seemingly unrelated threads in powerful and insightful ways. A groundbreaking work by a gifted scholar.

    Isabel's work "Caste: the origins of our discontents "is probably the best analysis of how race works in America since the founding of America. There have been countless others that have tried to explain, (and have done a remarkable job of explaining) the true nature of race as it relates to American history, and my praise for Isabel's contribution is not meant to declare the previous efforts of others insignificant. Nonetheless, by way of a timely comparison, physicists had assumed that classical physics was the basis of basis of our reality. We are all familiar with concepts like distance, time, gravity, location, friction, inertia and such things that are important to our reality. Isabela has, metaphorically speaking, introduced us to the quantum substructure of race., the structure that supports our racial reality and where the rules governing that substructure often defy our conventional understanding of race but are they framework of our racial reality.
    Put more simply, It has been (and is still) widely assumed that the system of racism has an underlying structure of hate. (Eliminate the hate and America can finally eliminate racism). Closer examination of the fundamental nature of racism reveals that the system is founded on caste, more specifically, how our society classifies our citizenry by race and declares that some races are entitled, and other races are not entitled to the bounty that America has to offer. This declaration in the past has been done by judicial decree primarily. Today it is the cumulative actions of society and not necessarily official government policy that has taken the lead. Our country has said that "All men are created equal"; empirical data tells a much different story,
    however.
