KAYAK HORSESHOE BEND | Exploring Marble Canyon from Glen Canyon Dam to Lee's Ferry | Colorado River

  • In 2018, we visited Horseshoe Bend for the first time. We loved it of course: looking out at the Colorado River while the sun dipped below the canyon walls. I remember seeing teeny tiny kayakers camped out on the beach below, and thinking, "I want to do that one day."
This was absolutely one of the most fun adventures we have ever gone on together. We hired a backhaul service to take us from Lee's Ferry to Glen Canyon Dam. Then we kayaked 16 miles down the calm, winding waters of the Colorado, camping right in the center of Horseshoe Bend before completing our route back to Lee's Ferry.
Being in the canyon was so intimate and peaceful. From floating along the cool river to gazing up the sheer sandstone walls to drinking natural spring water to encountering ancient petroglyphs, we loved every minute of it!
NOTE: This was our first pack-rafting experience, and it is totally doable with little to no experience. If you have any questions about anything we cover here, please let us know in the comments!!!
Thanks so much for watching. No go outside and do the things!

Thanks for watching!! We went in April when it was still pretty cool at night but warm during the day. Not a lot of bugs that we saw.

I am planning to got this month. I have one question. How did you guys start the fire? Did you guys have to take your own firewood?

    • @WifingAround
      @WifingAround  3 года назад

You are going to have a great time!! We saw people do both honestly. The backhaul company might know the latest fire recommendations and restrictions :)

Awesome video! Thank you so much for sharing!
A couple questions if you don’t mind :)
So I know you pay for the ride to the Dam, other than that are there any other fees?
What all did you bring? Equipment? Food?
How cold did it get at night? We are going on a few weeks so end of June.
Lastly, how did your kayaks hold up with a little extra weight from the equipment you brought?
    Thanks again!

      Thank you so much!
You do need to pay to enter the National Recreation area, or have a national park pass. We also rented a kayak and brought our inflatable double kayak for gear.
We brought the full sleep setup (sleeping bags, inflatable sleeping pads, inflatable pillows, and tent) headlamps, minimal clothes, food, a jet oil, sawyer squeeze water filter, toiletries, camp shoes, and rope to toe it all to the kayaks.
June shouldn’t be that cold at night- we went in April and it was still chilly. The river is a consistent 50 degrees or so.
Our kayaks were fine with the extra weight- as long as you don’t go over the limit which of the kayak and try to keep it balanced you should be good.
Lemme know if you have more questions!! :)

Thanks for sharing! Is it risky to do with four year kids?

Thank you for watching and sorry for the delayed response! This might be a lot with four year old kids. Not saying it's impossible, but I wouldn't personally recommend doing the whole trip with them.

Thanks for sharing this awesome video!! We are planing on doing it in 2wks:) Two questions if you don’t mind:3
    1. How long did it take for you to kayak from the 9 mile campsite back to the Lee’s Ferry?
    2. Did you have cell phone reception down there? (Especially at the 9mile campsite)
    Thank you!

Thank you so much for watching! You will absolutely love it!
We left 9 mile around 8 or 9 and made it back to Lee’s ferry at around 2pm I believe. We were stopping whenever we wanted and floating lazily sometimes. You could definitely grind it out faster.
I don’t think we had any reception beyond Lee’s Ferry. If we did it was really spotty and definitely not reliable.
Let me know if you have other questions :)

You are in Glen Canyon, not Marble Canyon. From the dam down to Lee's Ferry is Glen Canyon.

    great trip and video!
Do you remember the name of the company that took you to Lee's Ferry?
    Do they rent kayaks?
Can this be done in one day?
    Thanks

Thank you!! We loved it. We used kayak the Colorado for the backhaul and rented one kayak with them (we had one inflatable kayak we brought from home). The kayak was medium for an overnight trip- I wish it had bands on the front and back- I bet if you specified they would accommodate-but the backhaul was great!

It can be done in one day but they drop you off a little before Glen canyon dam.
