I’m glad Niehaus was there to call both plays for us. Miss both of these guys
He was amazing
Where did they go?
He passed ❤️
We miss him very much.
I can’t think of my childhood without thinking of his voice
I'm from Vancouver BC but grew up watching mariners on our sports network until rogers pulled the games in favor of pushing the blue Jay's on all of canada. His voice always stood out
One of the most beautiful swings in baseball.
So so good!
Easily the best
*The
Big time facts!!
Yes sir. Pure and smooth.
The announcer predicts a 20 year career. Wow.
There was just something about "The Kid" that you could tell he was going to be an all-time great.
@@D-block15 to be fair the mariners have always had a radar for young talent. The list of people who came up through the organization where Griffey, Arod, Edgar, tino, vizquel, Felix and even big papi and adam jones. It gets dicey when they get veterans.
the foresight is spooky
@@victorunger True and now they look like they struck hold again on Julio Rodriguez. Their scouts and front office are definitely earning their paychecks when it comes to that department.
@@D-block15 and they have other top prospects like sir harry ford and felnin celesten who will be great
Growing up in the 90’s, Ken Griffey Jr. was an absolute superstar. He was one of my favorite cards to collect.
Whats that? You mean they made little pieces of cardboard with players pics and stats on them? Lol. I collected mostly basketball cards but i did collect baseball and only a few players would trade across sports...meaning we would trade basketball for baseball cards. griffey jr was one of those guys that my friends were in awe of.
I have several of his rookie cards. I have his rookie in a sleeve with his dads card from the same year reversed in the same sleeve. The pair at one time was pretty collectible I haven’t looked at cars prices in a long time though. The 90’s were the hay day of card collection… those pinnacle mints, matching coins to cards broke me. Haha
I'll trade you some Barry Bonds Pittsburgh Pirates cards 😃
@D Holiday I have a binder of Just Griffey. But I left it at my folks' house, and there's no A/C. So, probably ruined.
@@richardbrancaleone9385 That is a shame! You should see if any of them are retrievable.
The only thing better than seeing Griffey is hearing the late Dave Niehaus
Miss him!
I agree. Sure miss Dave calling the games.
Only person other than family my grandma who was a Mariner diehard her whole life cried. Makes me miss them both.
It would be cool to see those old uniforms again
I Love K.G. Jr. When he was approaching 500 HR’s he parked one in Philly and got a standing ovation! Now that’s a tough crowd to win over and he did because he is greatness!!!!
In Philly?? Wow!
21 years later and the swing is still smooth as hell
Griffey Jr was a great baseball player and a great person as well. I grew up watching his Father play with the Reds. Truly Awesome Family.
The whole family has been a class act from everyone I’ve spoken to that I interacted with them. I grew up in the suburbs of Cincinnati, about 2 miles from where Griffey went to HS (Archbishop Moeller). My mom was the librarian at Moeller for several years, and when the Griffey family (as well as Larkin and [Buddy] Bell families) came back or were asked to help out the school, they always did so. Even more impressive, they made it personal (not just phoning it in or having a rep send something).
I was at the randy Johnson no hitter! at the time I had no idea how badass it was! then my dad bought me and my brother a pack of cards in cle elum I think at a gas station(I was probably 8 at the time) and I got a randy Johnson card!! good times rip. pops
griffey in center .... bone in right! ... Jeff Nelson, bosio, Reynolds!! the good days!!... Omar
😊
@@playstupidgameswinstupidpr7065 said all that and left out one of the greatest pure hitters of all time🙄 Señor Doblés Edgar Martinez
Glad Dave was able to call both those hits
Miss him so mucu
Griffey Jr was my favorite baseball player of all time and had he never had the injuries that he had in his career he could have been the all time career home run leader but you never saw or heard anything bad about him on or off the field one of the classiest players and all time greats
Yup...casual fan here but was spoiled growing up watching that beautiful swing. And yes, never heard him mixed up in a scandal. Never heard about him using PEDs like all the other junkies in the 90s.
If only he'd stayed in Seattle. He did well in Cincy but he just didn't seem to play with the same joy.
@@joe-zj8js they all used steroids, some just more than others.
Well said!
@@somepeoplecanthandlethetruth Really? Did you test them all? Did you watch them inject themselves? Don't make assertions so broadly, speak only to what's confirmed.
They fact he got a double on his first and last hit is crazy. What a icon.
So fitting his last hit was a walk-off for the Mariners. The most beautiful LH swing I’ve ever seen. If you weren’t a kid growing up in the 90’s with Junior, you can’t appreciate how popular he was and what he did for baseball. He was the penultimate superstar of MLB, he was to MLB what Michael Jordan was to basketball.
And no juicing scandal. I know what you mean. Growing up in the late 80s early 90s was awesome. Sad that sports doesnt seem the same. Right now im a big fan of shohei ohtani. My opinion is what he did being a 2 way player in the american league and not receiving the mvp was criminal.
@@joe-zj8js MLB has ruined baseball. Clock. Bases. Juiced ball. Self control & taking care of business. Players in '70s didn't waste time.
Put it this way: If you watched baseball in the 90s and didn't appreciate Junior, then you didn't really like and appreciate baseball. An absolute legend in every sense - he could've been the one to pass Hank Aaron if he didn't have to battle the injury bug.
@@jasonchilton5023 - And he could have done it naturally as well 😢. The only people I’ve ever heard discuss Griffey and juicing were haters.
Dave calling both! Awesome! My oh my I miss that call. Lucky I got to see and hear both of them.
Missing Dave!
Holy Smokes, just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
What an absolute legend. I feel blessed to have gotten to see both him AND Ichiro when the Mariners came into Detroit.
Jason💯I had seats in 1998 at Tiger Stadium that hung over home plate for a Mariners@Tigers doubleheader ….The Kid, A-Rod, and Randy Johnson on that team🧡🐅⚾️💙
My 2 favorite fielders growing up. Griffey and Ichiro
One of the purest swings if not the purest swing of all time
I miss hearing his voice calling Mariner games he made listening to a game fun. When he passed away, I cried. One the best. Miss ya, Dave.
I'm a dodgers fan i know your pain 😢
I was never a Seattle fan, but Ken Griffey Junior is an absolute legend. What a beautiful swing
Beautiful last AB & Ichro make iconic moment for dos HOFs. 🥲
Junior Griffey was the epitome of baseball. Beautiful swing, great outfielder, and a great human being. He set the baseball card collecting world on fire!!! 🔥🔥
He's my all time favorite
Even as a die hard Phillies fan from Philadelphia, it was impossible to grow up playing baseball and not admitting KGJ as your favorite player. He was IT. Backwards hat. Best looking swing. Awesome defensively.
Still the sweetest swing of all time. A work of art.
Truly one of the all-time greats with the 5 tools! Put up amazing but realistic #s playing through the controversial steroid era, the “Kid” was as good as they come! Could’ve been tempted to “juice” with all his injuries but didn’t seem to get caught up in it and was a class act on and off the field. Dad taught him the right way to handle his business.
Man, he was always one of my favorites as a kid. Had the shoes(and cleats) and everything.
I was lucky enough to be stationed at Fort Lewis from 89-91. A bunch of us would go to most Mariner home games. I got to see Randy Johnson’s no-hitter, the kid and his dad playing the outfield together, and Mookie Blaylock live. Mookie Blaylock is who we now know as Pearl Jam.
Kenny was a gem and a sheer pleasure to watch all the years he played in Seattle. One of the greatest all time baseball players. It was exciting going to the ballpark when Kenny played…the anticipation that something special was about to happen was incredible. It’s even more special that his first and last hits were announced by another NW baseball gem…announcer Dave Niehaus. Love them both!!
What an exciting player!
Its a shame he dealt with as many injuries as he did. He would have made a real push at the Babes record, and maybe we’d have a legit home run king right now.
Babe's record?
@@mizztery2994
Babe Ruth
@@BT-fl5qe Yes I know that. I was just puzzled that you said The Babe's record when he didn't hold any records at the time.
@@mizztery2994 Okay, so he would have most likely made a push at his record, as in top his 713 if he wasn’t injured so often. Considering he and Bonds retired around the same time, he maybe would have been able to top him as well.
Im not saying Babe had the record, just that he’d beat his record.
If Griffey stays healthy in the last half of his career!! He hits 800 homers
Dont be stupi d
100% yes he missed so many games still in his prime

I will never forget his last season with the Mariners. I was 19 years old, landed a job selling auntie annes pretzels in the stands. Basically got paid to have free season tickets/access to whole stadium. Favorite moment was his first homerun back as a Mariner, they send him in to pinch hit, near sold out stadium gives him standing ovation, you could just feel something special was about to happen. I completely stopped working, standing in the aisel along first baseline and just stood there in awe as my child hero walks up to the plate and sends (If I recall correctly) the very first pitch deep over the right center field fence with the smoothest swing in baseball history, just like he had done so many times before when I had gone to games as a child in the kingdome.
I just listened to this for over half an hour straight… I can listen to this for many more hours if I had the time. Dave Niehaus… you were the best! I’m a die-hard Giants fan but moved up here over 25 yrs ago… partly because of the M’s. Loved those Lou Pinella teams and that damn Kingdome - as shitty of a stadium as it ever could be, but still great memories. Giants are my passion but M’s and this all time great broadcaster, Dave Niehaus, you are part of my great memories. Miss your voice, your baseball stories, and all of your great calls!!! Griffey was pretty good too, I guess… 😂
Come on Mariners… win this damn World Series! I’m pulling for my Giants and you, M’s! Have a great season! Thank you for uploading this great clip with audio of Dave Niehaus video of “The Kid!”
You are a die-hard Giants fan but moved up to Seattle for the Mariners? Lol huh
@@jerradmechals1 Lol… no, no… I moved up because of work (transferred) but being a die-hard baseball fanatic since I was a kid, (was a decent catcher growing up -pursued baseball career/tried out for Rockies/Marlins expansion 1991-1993 until I wrecked my shoulder), then I was forced to leave my dream and work for real, which brought me up here where I was already following the M’s from back home. Moving up here to see them and those great teams, daily, was just an added perk.
@@camancho13 oh nice! Wow you must have been a good ballplayer. I couldn't even make my high school team, lol
I'm 39now but I remember going to the inaugural series vs the Rockies at candlestick in 93. Great memory of my childhood.
Well let's see how the giants fare this season, I'm not expecting much
Ken Griffey Jr. Major league Baseball was and probably still is my favorite baseball game of all time. The man was one of those athletes that transcended baseball and crossed over into American pop culture of the 90s. Almost like the MJ of baseball back the .
Knuckles mcgee was unstoppable
Such a pure swing plus and a overall amazing player
Great player. Cheered for Dad at Cincinnati and was so happy to see Junior at Cincinnati.
Niehaus on that second call gave me goosebumps. So many memories over the years ❤
Griffen Jr was all class..and probably one of the best sweetest swings in baseball.
No scandals, drug free, friendly persona, effortless swing, and kickass Super Nintendo games, love you Griffey
One of, if not, the sweetest swings ever in baseball. The Kid was just an absolute natural at the plate.
You could tell on his face during his last hit that he knew it was his last hit. It looks like kind of a bittersweet smile. He knew he wasn't going to finish the whole season and wanted to leave on a high note. I remember he retired suddenly at the end of may, not long after this game. (This game was on May 20th, 2010 - not May 10th as it says in the video)
What a way to start and end your career! Having the chance to play with his father was priceless.
There’s only a handful of opposing teams’ players I’ve ever really loved. Griffey was definitely one of them.
funnily enough for me Griffey Randy and Ichiro are all on that list for me something bout Seattle I guess
Griffey and Ichiro.. I miss those days..
Dudes swing made my knees weak... Forever a fan forever the greatest to me
I like how Jr. vaildated the commentator mid sentence with a double in his first ever swing.
Ken Griffey Jr. is my all time favorite player. Go Mariners!! Was at the Kingdome in 95 when Griffey slid into home plate for the winning run. Game 5 against the Yankees.
I don't know if I would have even gone to a baseball game, let alone become the Mariners fan/ diehard follower of what usually is a long & ugly season by early July, most years. Without Junior I know it would never even been more than a time killer to watch a Mariners game...All those moments & players I was never gonna see. So THANK YOU, Ken Griffey Jr. I LOVE THAT GUY!!
One of the sweetest swings you’ll ever see 👍⚾️
The fact it’s the same guy calling it gave me chills
The announcer sure nailed it. Those 20 years sure flew by didn't they.
I ALMOST saw Griffey's final HR. Hit the RF wall. He retired a week or two later. Also was fortunate to be there when he hit the 5,000th HR in Mariners history. It was my first time seeing him back with the Ms after watching him many times in the Kingdome.
This is when I still loved Baseball the Ken Jr and Frank T show.
Gretzky, Bo Jackson, Michael Jordan, Ken Griffey JR. My childhood was truly blessed. Let's Go M's!!!!!
I wasn’t born when he made his home debut or hit the warehouse at Camden yards in the HR derby but I had certainly been blessed enough to see him on play in person a few times.
No juice and was still hanging up there with hrs against the juicers in the steroid era. Best swing in baseball history.
As a baseball fan, I absolutely loved this guy. As an Astros fan, I love him even more now knowing his feelings about the Yankees.
He never lost that spark in his eyes and smile.
The greatest hitter in my lifetime and my all-time favorite one of the reasons why I represent his jersey on my hof wall respect from a diehard Cubs fan
Lol his swing is so fast it doesn't even seem like it's generating that much power but the ball FLIES when he makes contact. It's like he mastered physics with his swing.
Being a kid watching the Mariners and Sonics 20+ years ago was great, thanks to Dave Niehaus and Kevin Calabro.
Remember sitting in front of the TV with my dad watching the game Rick Rizzs Dave Neihaus and my dad.
RIP Dave, your calls give me goosebumps
RIP Dad. Keep smiling
I was 4 when he started playing pro ball and 25 when he retired. I grew up with the kid. He was a big part of my baseball life. Im a lefty and played like him. Watched him play in person and stayed up late in high school, to watch him play after 10--11@night. Those were some damn good days.
Ken Griffey Jr. was just simply AMAZING!!
Man. His swing is so pure.
Nobody can call a game like Niehaus. Goosebumps
Enjoyed watching him and his pops play ball. Good run for both
there isn't anyone I miss more than Niehaus. I preferred the radio over watching just because of him. 21 year playoff drought, and I didn't care as long as he was commentating. my favorite memories was hearing his voice on the way home from work. ugh the authentic human excitement and electricity he provided to a failing franchise is true love. wish he witnessed last year's playoff appearance 😢
The Kid Junior Griffey has the sweetest swing ever and the best accomplishments someone can have in life back 2 back home runs with his dad.
I had a chance to see him play when he was with the White Sox. Just being there seeing one of my all-time favorite players take the field is something I'll never forget.
exactly 6 months later, dave passed away.. A true Legend!
Griffeys stance & swing brings back so many great memories of when baseball was King.
him and ichiro are some of my alltime favorite players. some of the prettiest swings ive ever seen im my 33 years of life.
His swing was immaculate!!❤
I saw Ken Griffey hit a home run at dodger stadium his last season playing. He got a standing ovation from the crowd. He is the goat 🐐
His swing is the reason why I started switch hitting, 7 in t-ball. F. Fwd to my first varsity game 9th grade my coaches forgot I can hit righty (natural side)where i played basically zero pitchers were southpaws except that day I remember being upset I couldn’t hit lefty for my first AB. By the time I was a senior I could still count my right hand ABs using my fingers. Best decision ever becoming a switch hitter!! No better feeling than hitting one out from each side in one game. Didn’t happen for me till I was an adult playing in a men’s league but hey it was still incredible.
Me n my friends use to get into Griffey stance all the time😂. We use to try to swing like him lol greatest swing in baseball history! Love that guy man . His pull power is off the charts
2 of the best hitters of all time finally got to team up so late in their careers 🥺🥺
Saw him play in the kingdome in 91 saw him play for the San Bernardino spirit in 88 what a great player ❤
Griffey Jr and Ichiro were a dangerous combo for the Mariners.
Was such an honor to watch that beautiful swing for most of my life.😘
Griffey and Niehaus are both the GOAT.
I got to see Griffey Jr. at Fenway as a kid. God created this kid to be a baseball player, there's no question he had that in mind.
The most beautiful swing in baseball history
Him, and his dad, playing on the same team together! First, and only time that happen.
The Legend Ken Griffey Jr.....👍👍
The sweetest swing this game has ever seen
Kids still try to replicate his swing to this day. Smooth as butter!
Dave's greatest call was Griffey rounding the bases in game 5 vs the Yanks.
The man aged gracefully. No roids just a natural. Miss him
One of the most sweetest swings ever, when I was 9 years playing at little league, I tried to bat just like him
RIP Niehaus, you were my childhood
He did it right. Played clean. If it weren’t for injures, he’d reached 700 home runs. He was the essence of cool. The swing, the backwards cap.
That swing was like butter
Great to see Ichiro there at the end
I was there when Griffey Sr. and Griffey Jr. hit back-to-back homeruns against the Angels.
So happy Neihaus got to call both of these.
I miss Dave so much such a great voice oh and Griffey has and always will have a one of the best swings in baseball
Ken Griffey Jr is the michael jordan of baseball! Lets go Swingman!!!!
Dave Nieuhaus :-( legend in his own right. Sure miss his calls. Rip sir.
Gosh that swing is beautiful poetry, so effortless
He was the definition that everyone can win a championship but not everyone can be a hall of famer. One of the greats to ever do it, if your a baseball fan you at least try to do this swing more than once in your life and imitated his batting stance.
