What I find fascinating about this is how the song's slowness REALLY creates a feeling of tension or suspense. There's an ominous quality to it. Crazy how simply stretching out a note can produce this effect.
+NxtGen Project [1080p@60FPS] There is actually a "concert" in a German church lasting over 600 years right now. They managed to have around 15 different tones so far xD
Following along with the sheet music, this appears to only be the first piece of the composition. There are 8 pieces in Organ²/ASLSP, just like the original As Slow As Possible. But all 8 are intended to be played as part of the whole, with the option to repeat a single piece at any point during the performance. If you were to listen to the Halberstadt version of this, it would be over after a mere 71 years. We've been all these years!
It's a very discordant piece of music to be playing for 600 years. I would not want to work at that church with any of these chords continuously playing :S
I've seen videos of it. It's actually mesmerising in a weird sort of way. There's this organ in a corner of the church, humming those ominous notes continuously... Reminds one of the monolith in 2001.
I agree. And the chord changes in this slow cage piece are not even beautiful. Adore Jul, Jul strålande Jul. I play it in California every Christmas Eve service, no matter people don’t recognize it here.

The best part of the music is in 457 years old 🤌🤌🤌
I feel that's amazing! It kind of teaches us that patience is all; that TIME is all, and we don't have to rush everything. That's just my point of view c:
Dude the chord from 0:55 will sound for years and it's not the biggest tension in the piece. The sad thing is by that time I'll be a corpse :( but seriosly, imagine people in the church of Burchardi listening to this 2:27
Why isn't there any other videos/tracks of the same piece also sped up??? this seems to be the only one! Tho they said there are 30-70 min versions.....
Imagine a generation recording this, hoping that the future will let them show the ENTIRE THING to the public. 1 year remaining, the camera system is finally deleted from technology and a brand new recording technique comes. The ENTIRE family tree spent their lives for nothing.
For some reason I was under the assumption that when played at a normal pace, the composition would be quite good, but it just sounds like a bunch of random tones. If you do something merely because you CAN, that is a bit questionable in itself, but if you do it poorly, there is no point at all. "Yay, let's climb Mt. Everest, but we'll wait for decent weather and have a VTOL plane drop us off at 10 meters from the summit. Then we have five minutes for taking pictures before getting back into the plane." End of rant. Sorry. Disappointment speaking.
This isn't the normal pace, what you're saying is the equivalent of me complaining that Bohemian Rhapsody doesn't sound good when played at 231% speed. 🅱️
I think the interesting thing about it is that there is no way for one human being to fully appreciate the piece in full (especially if it's played for 600 some years). It will always sound different the slower you play it. And I have a feeling, when experiencing it in real life, allowing each note to wash over you, you feel the reverberations of that low note, the anxiety that the clashing notes produce after an excruciatingly long time, THAT is what is good about it. If it were a normal song when played, than what would be the point, you know? We'd all just listen to it at normal speed. This thing is designed to be experienced at a speed that we have no comprehension of. It's also possibly designed to make us very aware of time. This song FEELS long even at just 4 minutes. Which is kind of interesting.
The next change in chord will be at 10/5/2013. And after that it's exactly this same chord for 7 years. I was there yesterday and, believe me, c and d sharp sounded rather good in that old church ruin abandoned by time, inhabited only by light and sound. ;)
I read somewhere that this progression would go on for 2 years until it went to the next part of the song. I looked it up because I thought it meant it would only play like 1 note every 2 years haha.
I would love for someone to do the math and see how many years is equal to 1 sec, 0.5 s, 0.25 s, and so forth. And at which time in this sped up version are we at in 2020, in comparison to the 639 year version.
You know it's a work of genius when somebody says, "It's so simple. I could've done that." Ya didn't do it though. So "simple" doesn't apply to a piece like this.
That's rather... anticlimactic. I was hoping there would be some rhythms and melodies at play when played at a common speed but this is just holding various notes at random creating an ominous etherial feel.
I do hate it when a performer rushes a piece like this.

Think about it. This tune will be playing right through the apocalypse.

John Cage: Ultimate Troll
I've listened the whole album. He's the king of slow music.
bro is over 600 years old
John would listen it at x0.25 speed
no sound with x0.25 speed
It sounds distorted at 0.25 speed, and scary
Pretty sure you meant 0.025
Ahahahahahahaha
I’d like an updated time frame on this piece at that pace.

An incredibly, wonderful, powerful composition on a magnificent organ

Try looking for any on RUclips or a different source.
They actually play individual chords for months or even years, and that's how the piece can be stretched out over 639 years.
