I know quite a lot of Hollywood actresses of the 1940s and 1950s.
I didn't know Ms Crain though.
She is a striking beauty with sparkling eyes and a very charming engaging smile.

All I know is from her Wikipedia entry, but it's obvious she and her husband were Catholic, which is probably why they never divorced. Wiki indicates she and her husband lived apart for much of that marriage, but with seven children, they couldn't have been apart TOO much. The Catholic Mr. & Mrs. Spencer Tracy remained married all of their lives too, but lived apart the last 30-some years of his life while he lived with Kate Hepburn.

It was not a happy marriage, however, from the mid-1950's on. They filed divorce suits against each other at that time. They reconciled on their 11th wedding anniversary (New Year's Eve, 1956) and the marriage produced the last three of their seven children after that. But it remained a strained marriage and they often lived at separate residences.

I only just ran into Goody's Headache Powder for the first time last year! (I'm 44 and prone to migraines, which is why it was surprising I hadn't before.) Though as it turns out, the Lewallen family bought the formula from the originator, and were the ones who made it famous (mostly in the south).
    www.northcarolinahistory.org/commentary/367/entry
Also, as Mr. Richardson notes (and I didn't notice til now), there was an entirely separate Walter h. Jones (in the 50s) who became a NJ State Senator, who got into battles against garbage collection rackets. (Sayeth Wikipedia.) Which is, if nothing else, ironic.

juliansinger you have to drink a regular coke with the goody powder for it to be really effective. The caffeine helps constrict blood vessels in your head and relieves pressure. Plus the sugar in the coke washes the powder down your throat. It is a common practice here in the south and it will fix your headache. B. C. Powder will work too. Just do not inhale the powder. Inhale, slide the powder in your mouth and take several big swigs of coke. Breathe through your nose until you get the powder down. Best headache cure ever.

One musical motion picture worth noting that starred Jeanne Crain was Rodgers & Hammerstein's _State Fair_, release in 1945 in color (but in narrow screen 4:3 aspect ratio). (There was a 1962 remake in wide screen.) The film is noteworthy on multiple counts, but one of them is that _State Fair_ was Rodgers & Hammerstein's only musical that was intended to be a film -- it was never presented as a stage musical. (Similarly, they wrote their musical _Cinderella_ for presentation on television, not for the stage.) So I have to conclude that Jeanne Crain could sing, since they cast her for a lead role in a Rodgers & Hammerstein musical film -- the premiere version of that musical -- and they didn't have someone else do the singing for her. Here's a clip of Jeanne Crain's rendition of "It Might as Well Be Spring" from the 1945 film _State Fair_ -- you can hear what her singing was like as well as see what she looked like at age 20 -- possibly even 19, if they did the filming the year before the release. video.search.yahoo.com/video/play;_ylt=A2KIo9gmrA9YW2UARkT7w8QF;_ylu=X3oDMTByZjF2ZHFmBHNlYwNzcgRzbGsDdmlkBHZ0aWQDBGdwb3MDNw--?p=state+fair+jeanne+crain&vid=40d9d4c785fc299493d014db32f2db67&turl=https%3A%2F%2Ftse3.mm.bing.net%2Fth%3Fid%3DOVP.V4863886972a1d7e8fc62c94c33febf77%26pid%3D15.1%26h%3D168%26w%3D300%26c%3D7%26rs%3D1&rurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DTXMEVTtAZkI&tit=It+Might+As+Well+Be+Spring&c=6&h=168&w=300&l=267&sigr=11bkutf6p&sigt=10qpjueha&sigi=13299j8b4&age=1395337963&fr2=p%3As%2Cv%3Av&fr=yfp-t&tt=b

I know. It's like being told that Santa is your parents.

    • @ToddSF
      @ToddSF 7 лет назад +5

Mic Mal -- Well, I didn't know they dubbed in Jeanne Crain's singing, but I'm hardly shocked. I've known plenty of films where that happened, such as _My Fair Lady_ where they overdubbed Audrey Hepburn with singing by Marnie Nixon (who did a lot of that for various actresses) and _The King & I_ where the same singer overdubbed Deborah Kerr. There is a clip of Audrey Hepburn singing "Wouldn't It Be Loverly" from _My Fair Lady_, and it turns out she could actually sing very nicely. The real puzzle is why they overdubbed Rita Moreno in _West Side Story_ -- Rita Moreno sang in Broadway shows and there was no excuse for that. (Of course, they overdubbed Richard Beymer and Natalie Wood, among others in that film.)

There's no way for me to reply directly to JustAFocus (thank you again, broken comments system), but I'll paste the original comment below, which I fully agree with. I've noticed that Dorothy pulled this camera hogging routine far less as the series went on. I'm up to the end of 1962 in posting the shows and it feels like it's been a long time since I've seen her do this sort of thing. But in the earlier shows it really did irritate me. JustAFocus wrote: "It's kind of irritating that Dorothy, once she knows she has the answer, hogs a ton of boring time on-camera by asking a whole lot of questions that she knows will be answered "yes" -- rather than just getting to the point. She kind of forgot that this is supposed to be entertainment."
    Jeff Vaughn 1 year ago
I read that Dorothy's camera hogging was an irritation to the other panel members so I guess it was all pretty obvious to everyone but Dorothy.
    Ryan Schroer 1 year ago
She was the reason they changed the mystery guest format to one question at a time.
    americanmanhood 8 months ago
I think that Dorothy is unjustly accused of this. I think she no more hogs the camera than any of the others, and at least she is very charming and likeable while she is on, which cannot be said for some of the others who shall remain nameless (Bennett Cerf, John Daly, Bennett Cerf, John Daly, Bennett Cerf, John Daly).

    Haggis 5 months ago
"Are you more a singer than a dancer?" Although this was a "relatively" early broadcast, still it's a wonder they don't know that one can only ask questions answered by yes or no; and Daly did not even stop her.

Every time a contestant has anything to do with garbage the panelists are asking questions about "product" instead of "service".

It's kind of irritating that Dorothy, once she knows she has the answer, hogs a ton of boring time on-camera by asking a whole lot of questions that she knows will be answered "yes" -- rather than just getting to the point. She kind of forgot that this is supposed to be entertainment.

Arlene didn't realize it at the time but she called the trash guy a "GarbageHead". I think there is a singing group, if you can call it singing, named GarbageHead; She named a group 60 years ahead. Ok, that was a stretch. Didn't Steve guess Rhonda Fleming to a redhead the week before?

I was puzzled by the woman who made headache powders: when asked 'Is anything added to it?', she answered No. Water must be added in order to drink the headache cure. Perhaps she understood the question to mean 'Is any other chemical or remedy added to it?' and she was proud to say that her powders were pure and entirely made by herself. We'll never know because we didn't see what was in the packets she gave to John Daly and which were intended for the panel members.

That is not how you take headache powders. You pour the powder in your mouth and quickly drink it down with water being careful not to inhale until all particles are swallowed. Better to drink Coke as the suger adheres to the powder. But you do not add water to the powder, like in a glass. Thats how we do it down south.

To commenter ANTHONY you,ll notice about those ladys hairstyles by 1951 the longer fuller look of the back was now gone and the shorter but slightly curly style is on most actress,s along with the high eyebrows look. The men,s suit jackets seen 1952 tru 1956 had one of the lapels (usually the bottom one) jut out wider than the top one and by 1957 the thinner look was coming in while double breasted was completely gone by 57.1957 brought in STRIPED SHIRTS for summer wear, black slacks (like in the song of the same name) and plenty of PINK/WHITE -PINK/BLACK STRIPPED SHIRTS LONG SLEVE TO WEAR WITH LEATHER JACKETS!! Check out YOU TUBE for many of those TEENAGE HIGH SCHOOL,TEENAGE RACE CARS,TEENAGE ROCKABILLY SINGERS MOVIES and you will see a lot of those lady,s styles of dress and looks!!!
