East Yorkshire Country Walk North Cave Wetlands Nature Reserve to Market Weighton Canal round

- This is a lovey walk for all the family with plenty of wildlife. Starting from North Cave Wetlands car park we walk along the track looking over the gaps in the hedge and into hides. We continue through the gravel quarries to Market Weighton Canal and return via South Carr Farm and Dryham. This is an easy flat walk on gravel, grass and tarmac tracks/paths. There are some fields and gates, a stile and at the time of doing this walk we had a bank of soil to climb over due to the canal being cleaned out and was covering the path.
Elevation: approx lowest point 0.88m (2.88ft) approx highest point 12.09m (39.67ft) approx ascent 23.62m (77.50ft)
Approx 7 miles allow 2.5 hours (add extra for watching the wildlife) using OS Explorer Map 291, Goole and Gilberdyke. This walk is done clockwise.
Start point: North Cave Wetlands Nature Reserve.
North Cave Wetlands Nature Reserve is in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Free entry.
Directions and Parking
From the west leave the M62 at junction 38 onto the B1230 northbound. Follow this for just under 2 miles to North Cave village. Take a left turn at the crossroads and soon after take a left turn onto Dryham Lane and North Cave Wetlands Nature Reserve is on the right.
Parking: Free car park at the nature reserve.
Toilets and Refreshments
There is no public toilets en-route. For refreshments a burger van sells refreshments from Wednesday to Sunday between 7.15am and 1.15pm. The nearest toilets are in the local pub at North Cave village.

Hi Paul, we were there in April / May time just visiting and looking over the place. As well as what we have shown you we noticed there were baby avocet's and Mandarin Ducks but we don't know whether they were breeding or not. There was also a large amount of sand martins nesting in the farest quarry plus a lot of other small birds including kingfisher's. As you head back from the canal on either side of the track you may see a number of deer grazing. This is a fantastic walk as a lone bird watcher or with your family. All the best The Taxi Driver

Hi Andrea hope you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year. We were all set for getting some walks filmed in the Lakes in the next two days but the wind forcast is not in our favour so we are having two days out in the Dales instead looking for new walk ideas. Hi FF824 we had to look up Audubon Society before we could reply, Audubon being a word we have never heard before. We agree with you 100%. The North Cave Wetlands are the result of mineral extractions ie sand and gravel. As you can see when the ponds have been extracted and landscaped properly it only takes a few years for various types of bird life to thrive and breed in large numbers. once the birds have settled and get used to the machinery both can live and work side by side. As each pond is dug out and landscaped you've got natural expansion plus all the mammals, insects and butterflies, that live in the grassland and all the fish and amphibians that live in the ponds that are also the food for the small birds which in turn can be food for birds of prey. We have some fabulous wetlands in North Yorkshire, a lot of them old industrial sites ie coal extraction and thanks to the forward thinking of the wildlife and bird societies these are easily accessible to the public including families and wheelchairs. Some of them with cafes, toilets and educational areas for school parties. When we come across some more wetlands and nature reserves we will be pleased to add them to our site. If you look at your camera at the car park you'll see a black shape coming down from the top left corner of the film looks like a ghost or spirit unless it's not. Atb
