  • Hello Makers! We’ve had a cook and wet spring here but I’m getting ready for warmer weather with some Summer knits. This week, the Roman Holiday Tank is off my needles. I’ve also been making socks (no surprise) and a new bag for Farmer’s markets this year. And if that wasn’t enough, I have been working on solving a mystery with my Diana Watters murder mystery cross stitch.
It’s summer and I’m getting ready for travel knitting. I have some ideas for what I will be packing for our summer holiday and I would love to hear what projects you like to pack.
Settle in and let’s talk about knitting!

Beautiful projects! You're making me want to get back to cross-stitching. Love the murder mystery idea. As far as travel, I'm a homebody but I haven't had issues with my chiaogoo circulars. I find that if I knit my way through the airport, I look quite harmless. Most security folks tell me about their mom or aunt who knits. Musselburgh is my go to no thinking easy knit, although I'm able to knit socks on my daily walks. I turned a heel while walking last week and felt like I leveled up, as the kids say.

Thank you! It’s a great feeling when you can knit socks without having to really think about it. Good work!

Hi Joline, your socks are both great, I will have to look for Kay Jones pattern, I have another of hers. Your top is lovely. I love your cross stitch! It will be beautiful.

I did an international trip recently and the musselburgh hat was the perfect travel knit. Check the airport's rules on knitting needles. On my trip back home I had to check in my knitting needles because the overseas airport explicitly stated they weren't allowed past security line.

Thanks for this tip! I’m going to go check out the airports we’ll be travelling through.

Hello. I travel internationally quite a lot and so far I have never being stopped at security for my knitting. I usually knit socks on plane as I find it easy to carry and work on and I use the 9” circular so that I don’t have to worry about losing a needle or two on the plane. Thank you for your podcast.

Thanks for your comment. I like to use DPNs and I have never had a problem either. I’m just scared of losing my needles and being stuck on a flight with no knitting. I may have to try 9 “ circs again. Do you have a difficult time with knitting the heel?

Thank you for responding to my comment. I do take two DPNs for the heel but I do not put them in my carry on and I time knitting it in a way that I am not on a plane when I do it. I hope this helps.

Hi Joline, Your new socks are very pretty. I always take knitting on wooden needles & have flown quite a bit internationally without problems. Often I bring a fingering weight, long sleeve sweater that I’ve knit the yoke (color work or lace) at home & I work on the stockinette body while traveling. Socks & 1 skein shawls are also favorites. Enjoy your trip.

i usually travel with a sweater and a sock but this time I’m trying to go as light as possible.

Can you do a butterfly heel in a toe up sock?

I don’t see why not. It’s inserted into the sock and worked back and forth on half the stitches and then you resume knitting in the round.
