The "computer" module for a set of headlights is upwards of $300 depending on the vehicle. Some newer trucks it can be $5-600....it is ridiculous. Of course right to repair being what it is, Tony and people skilled like him are the only saviors in 50% of instances where the pads can be replaced....if not, you are screwed.

@@jritechnology Some of the more popular units,and more common failures are gradually being covered by the OE component manufacturers,such as Hella and Bosch themselves and through a growing collection of third party manufacturers,even for stuff like Kia where their drivers are sealed inside the light there are people out there designing kits for repair,you just need to know where to look and what to look for. I see mostly DRL failures due to their constant use,the failures that aren't caused by water ingress are almost always caused by heat soak.

When I design any PCBs with such connectors I will usually put bunch of stitching vias to the mechanical pins on the sides or sometimes even the signal pins to make it a bit stronger.
I had to see a pad ripped off from under a coin cell socket to learn that. Can reccomend!
Funnily enough I played with some of that coated style wire when fixing some headphones for my kids. The coating was a headache to deal with but found that by burning it with a lighter cleaned the coating off and made soldering a breeze. Thanks for the quality content!

thanks for the tip on the clear soldermask - i always had problems getting a blob of coloured mask to harden all the way through - was always hard ontop but still wet underneath if it was to thick as i dont think the UV could penetrate past the top layer - so clear mask is the way to go - cheers

its very tempting to superglue the connector back on but superglue (cyanoacrylate) + a soldering iron is a real bad combo! been there too many times and without fume extraction my eyes sting just thinking about it!
burning superglue deffinatly isn't a good idea.

Sunlight will cure that! Interesting fix - hope it was successful! What a heat sync for 8 tiny LEDs.
These little things can emit a lot of power for their size...there are even lasers that can cut straight trough sheet metal, and actual laser array would fit in your hand like this tiny LED board.
it's almost as if manufacturers take firesafety seriously.
I've read a lot of complaints about LED headlights not being able to melt snow, so if driving in heavy snow at night one needs to continually stop and get out to clean the headlights. Looks like a bit of that massive heatsink should be on the inside of the headlight enclosure.

but LED's can generate PLENTY of heat so no need to worry.

I’ve only watched a few of your videos and I’m impressed by your repair skills. I have basic soldering skills but nothing like that, I’m going to practice tracing traces as I didn’t even know you could really do it like that.
I like to scrape lines with a sharp soldering iron. the heat helps to soften the top layer and it comes out without damaging the copper traces.

I really like the clear UV mask you demonstrated. it makes better sense to me as you can see whats been repaired and how it was repaired under the mask. Would be really helpful in this regard, plus like you said it cures faster and harder. I love it, I going to pick some up. Cheers Tony!
Just a bit of info about the UV torch or UV source you use for curing conformal coatings etc. They come in two 'flavors' so to speak, the more common and cheaper 395nm wavelength type, and the 365nm wavelength type. Both will cure the coating, but I've found that the 365nm wavelength is much _MUCH_ faster and handy at curing than the 395nm. I use resins a fair bit and this is true for most of the resins I use, and the conformal coatings.
it's almost as if 395nm is a diffrent wavelenght of light than 365
almost as if 395 is only just barely still uv light.... oh wait. IT IS.
UV light is 400nm till 100nm. but the meaningfull one. UV-A. is 400-315.
so it's kindof self explainatory as to why 365 is better at curing than 395.
it's because it's a purer form of UV. it's smack dab in the middle of the range.

Why are people not careful around these snd connectors like gawd damn it's been 15 years opening every thing in my damn house I have never ripped a connector off
To be fair, you are probably not tinkering with the electronics in your house every day. A mechanic works on dozens of cars every week and all of them designed differently. It would be surprising if they didn't rip connectors off every once in a while.
It's only recent that the general public has to work on electronics with SMD connectors. Plus, automotive connectors used to be really chunky for that reason.

@@aspuzlingto be fair, as a mechanic I make absolutely sure I do not break connectors as there is a great expense endured to fix it and it takes me more time so I lose money.

Had a couple belts to the alternator and the power steering pump
It was roomy inside. Great car.
I drove it a lot and I worked on almost everything on it.

You could also connect those 2 support pins to 2 wide pieces of metal and then glue those 2 plates to the main board.
Looks like a job well done! Love your videos, and I try to watch them all throughout and give a like. I'm sure your videos must help many people out there. I don't do anything like the work you do, but on occasions I like to DIY and fix things, on occasions this involves electronics. Watching your videos has improved my knowledge of soldering. My skill on the other hand is a different story.. lol! I don't have all the kit yet but I have a few soldering irons a few tips, a board holder, a rework air station and a pre-heater and a bunch of components I buy as I need them. I haven't detached and de-soldered a surface mounted IC yet or performed a re-ball, so I'm just a noob really. Love your work, please don't quit anytime soon! I have two old Titan pascal cards (connected) in my tower that have lasted a decade without any maintenance apart from the odd vacuum to remove dust. I probably should replace the paste but I'm a bit worried about my level of skill to do that. Any advice for a noob would be welcomed?

in case anybody is wondering, that part is off of a 2013-2020 BMW 3 series GT :)
All these newer headlights have a computer module in them that connect to either LIN bus single wire or CAN bus with twisted pair. That way you can get an annoying check headlamp message on the dash when something goes wrong.
99% IPA with a adjustable spray nozzle bottle works great for flux cleaning

I was once a micro miniature repair tech in the Navy
I would have tested it before gluing as it's almost impossible to fix once glue covered. I fixed a ripped off smd chip with a method a bit like this but wished I'd seen this first as would have learned a lot and done a more reliable

Very nice repair. Some of those God damned automotive electrical connectors will not separate without a fight, even using multiple small flat heads or picks with the release tab depressed or held up. Same with some rubber grommets.
Yeah i sometimes use the "plastic-safe" Caramba brake cleaner. Though it's almost the same stuff as potentiometer cleaner (residue-free contact cleaner), barely any difference.

Just as advice, something like temperature cured Seal-glo NE8800T (aka "Fuji red glue") will cover vibration issues better. Or J-B weld epoxy, but it is less durable.
ב''ה, double check whether the standard and quick JB products in particular are conductive. May have heard this is an issue with regular epoxies after aging and water soaking as well, but the JB stuff has whatever gives its color and texture from the get-go.
