See my comment of love below for this camera. BUT, I just shot a feature film with this S5. Blown away by the image, easy to work with. Shooting into the Ninja you get 5.9k RAW, 422, 12 bit, "AT FULL FRAME." This is so many levels above M4/3rds. They just do not compare, and I shot GH4's and GH5's and loved them before I came across this camera. Just a note for filmmakers, rolling shutter is worse because of the full frame, you have to design your shots carefully for action sequences. This film was a thriller with some action sequences, it worked out okay, make the action come toward or away from the camera, fast panning shows the rolling shutter off. I could be tempted by the Red Komodo because of the global shutter, but I much prefer the image and color science on the S5, it really is poetry. I cannot say enough good things about this tiny little cheap powerhouse. The only next step up for an indi filmmaker would be from my 1,200 for an open box S5 to a 70k Arri. My DP, another GH5 and GH6 fan, is selling his GH cameras and moving to a couple of S5's and I totally plan to shoot my next 2 films with the S5.
Nice and thorough review. Based on what I've seen of the S5, I went ahead and ordered one. It will be my first foray into full frame. And considering its price point, I'd say it was a good choice. Thanks again for your review.
I sort of think of the S5 auto focus like a bonus to a great cinema camera. Not the "best", but a welcomed useful feature compared to a dedicated cine cam with virtually none. It's got a bit more dynamic range than the similarly priced BMPCC 6K but also "can" be used for vlogging. A lot of us also started off with truly garbage autofocus, so the S5 is miraculous in comparison to what we started with.
Best review i found, thank you! after reading so much damage to the Sony A7iii cameras to the shutter, if less quality material is used whether they are built worse! I decided for the panasonic S5 anyway also the better codec and not overheating are a plus for video! the focus has improved, and I prefer to manually set my focus to a fixed distance, than opting for a Sony A7iii with worse monitor and poor shutter build quality!
I can't believe I'm saying this, but AF tracking looks cinematic in a way. Almost emulating the slight inaccuracies of a human focus puller. Any pulsing will immediately ruin that impression, but still, I was sort of surprised. I think it'll work on a gimbal shot or something with a lot of cam movement. This S5 seems like the full-frame GH5 so many have wanted.
Just bought it, having 6 Canon lenses and never even thought of switching to Panasonic. What I would have loved to see, is at least 10fps AFC...but everything comes with one Major tradeoff.
Nice review - I just picked one up a new one with $500 discount at BH Photo in the US - I thought the videos being done on the new Fuji XH2 S were a great advertisement for the S5
Best review I've seen! I'm sure I've seen them all the time of the S5 release!! Been so disappointed in all the awesomeness in cameras released in the past year! To big, does great quality video but poor stills, or vise-versa, overheats and unreadable, missing necessary features, and most... WAY TO EXPENSIVE! As a professional Hybrid shooter, I need to be able to do both stills & 4K 10 bit video in a light weight FF camera. Unless SONY releases the A7 lV with comparable stills image quality as the S5 and capable of 4k 60 10 bit internal (without an APSC crop), then I will purchase the Panasonic S5 as my main workhorse for 2021-22. Thx for make time to do this in-depth review. Cheers
I currently focus on documentary films (on a very lean starting budget; all out of pocket) and my initial canera is the old Panasonic UX-180.... . I am looking at the S5 because the color science is similar, but it can push me closer towards the future..... from 8 bit and beyond. Plus it is a package that I can take on the motorcycle as well as hike with and has the weather resistance that the UX-180 does not have..... for out of the box, I can match the UX-180 with Cin-D mode, or switch to V-Log between primary and B camera..... that is my thinking anyway.
2 questions: 1) Does it have a 'Focus Transition' feature like the GH5 has? 2) Does it allow you to set separate ISO, shutter and aperture settings for video and photo? Great review BTW. Thank you for being the only reviewer with the good sense to point out any cables other than a mic cable will get in the way of the LCD. Can't understand why they'd design it that way.
I don't know... I'm keen on buying the S1 or the S5. First had my eyes on the S1, but now with the S5 out, it seems like a better choice. Some things I don't understand, is why the S5 has got better features for a cheaper price... slightly Better recording modes, anamorphic modes, integrated V-log, I even get a free sigma lens at my local store when i'd purchase the S5. The S1 on the other hand, has got a bigger (and better) body in my opinion, with better button ergonomics. I also think the tilting screen on the S1 would be more convenient than the flipscreen on the S5 because I'd use an external monitor anyways. Also the IBIS seems to be slightly better on the S1. but then again, it has no anamorphic modes, and no integrated V-log, which would cost me 200 euros extra to get. Your thoughts on this? Should I just grab the S5 because it just gives more for less money? Or would the S1 be better for mainly video and worth the extra 500 euros?
Nice review thanks for putting in time and effort on these, what are the vlog scientific LUTs that you speak of here? If Panasonic nail AF someday I reckon they could dominate the market.
I purchased an S5 as well as a Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 Lens. It takes excellent photos by day, but during my first attempts with Astro, I am getting a huge amount of white spots. I generally use M mode and set shutter for 20 - 25 seconds at F2.8 and ISO between 1600 and 3200. I am at a loss. I have turned the Long Exposure Noise reduction off. Any suggestions?
As usual, the best or one of the best and most thorough reviews that can be found on youtube. Thanks so much. I do have one question if you get around to answering. I like to shoot hand held and often use the EVF. The S1 and S1H both seem to only have a diopter adjustment of 3.0 or 3.5--whereas others, Sony or Fuji, and the GH5 have a diopter of 4.0. I really like to shoot with out my glasses--but require a 4.0 adjustment. Do you know if Panasonic corrected the EVF in the S5? It would be wonderful if they have. One thing you failed to touch in is the MF and peaking. I understand the focus peaking, which virtually vanishes the moment you hit record in the S1 is fixed in the S5. So, like the S1H, the peaking remains robust during recording. Alas, you are still unable to punch in to check or adjust focus during recording...bummer. Both Sony and Fuji provide this feature. It's not a total deal breaker for me, but the punch in feature makes like so much easier for us manual focus video shooters, not just in checking focus, but in making focus pulls.
Beyond excellent work. Many thanks. Time has moved on and I now export 5.9k RAW to the Ninja V out of this really cheap little camera. I got an open box deal for $1,200. I was a massive fan of GH5, but now, better color science (Arri based) The image is unbelievable. Flesh tones are wonderful. You can really create some poetry with this sensor. Get the camera cheap, you are really just paying for the sensor, go into a Ninja V at 5.9 k RAW, but put good glass on it and you will be good for the next 10 years. Please don't mention the auto focus, you just give me a head ache, everyone knows Panasonic are part of an evil plot to fuck with the human race as regards auto focus. "Filmmakers do not care about auto focus, and vloggers have zero use for 5.9k RAW." I love your work. Subbed.
Hey Charlie. You seem to be a seasoned user. I've recently purchased the s5 with the 20-60 kit lens and im currently thinking about how to build out my lens collection. I shoot mostly music videos and i have helped out on some weddings. Also really interested in getting into real estate videophrapy. What are some of your favorite lenses? if you had to pick between the 24-105 and the 28-70 sigma what would you choose? What are your favorite primes?
@@sebastienbadio9208 Hi Sebastian, you can shoot pretty much anything with a 24-105, but an ideal rig for me on full frame is 16-35 Canon zoom, 2.8. 70 to 200mm Canon zoom, 2.8 and a nifty fifty, 1.8. That covers everything most people need at manageable cost for a semi pro. If you are getting serious as a "filmmaker" then think about cinema primes at around 25, 50, and 70mm's. Primes? I never met a prime I didn't like, it is a totally different experience than zooms, much nicer image. I was shooting a film today with my S5 at 5.9k ProRes RAW into a Ninja V. The image is on a par with a high end Alexa, simply startling. You make really big files, but it is really hard to go back once you see that image. Even the 4k Raw is mind blowing for a camera at this price, for any camera, actually. Happy shooting bro.
I wish the Panasonic S5 had a Neutral profile alongside the other profiles it has. As my Nikon D5500 has both a Flat and a Neutral profile and it's like five years old.
Panasonic (and other people) say we get around 2h of continuous shooting. You are saying around 1h, and Wolfcrow says 40 minutes… Is it "that much" relative to the recording settings?
Thanks, as always, for your highly detailed review! The S5 has some amazing features for its price! I’m a little confused about which features the S5 has and the S1 does not. The S5 does feel like a Full-Frame version of the GH5. Have you ever you CineTape, or another ultrasonic distance measuring system with a Panasonic contrast AF system? If Panasonic made a smaller version, their autofocus would slay the competition. I love the image that you captured. At the end of the day, it’s all about the image. I do like the S5 image better than the a7siii and the R5, maybe it’s the 14stops of dynamic range. You’ll need to compare the S5 to the C70 when it’s released for dynamic range. Thanks so much!
Great review, Thank you. Quick question, does recording starts immidiately after pressing a record button or there is latency like in a7sII? Loookin forward to hearing from U. 👌
Apparently there is a tophandle with record button from smallrig that works with this camera. Yet I still need to find out where I would plug the 3,5mm jack in the S5...
Lots of great info, and I appreciate all your coverage. As a wedding videographer, I shoot mainly in 59.97 so I can slow down my footage. Would I get better quality on this camera shooting FHD 60P internally, or externally to the Ninja V in ProRes? Thank you so much!
SO I AM CURIOUS! WHY HAS NO ONE WHO HAS ACCESS TO THESE CINE CAMERAS TESTED THE PANASOIC S1H IN PRORES RAW AGAINST THE CANO C500 MARK II IN CANNON RAW? Please can you guys help?
Great review I really like the look of the camera but like a lot of people it's the autofocus that's putting me of dose anyone know of an autofocus lenses adaptors for Nikon to L mount adapter ?
If the R6 wouldn't overheat in 4K 24p, it would be perfect. If the Panasonic S range would have good autofocus, it would be perfect. It feels like nobody actually released a good hybrid camera. I guess Sony will crush everyone once again once the A7IV comes out...
Yeah, I was so looking forward to getting an R6, and using the ND filter adapter for EF lenses to get a mini-cine cam. Didn't see the cripple hammer flying in full speed. I feel like the A7iv has a lot it needs to do, and can't be more than $2,200.
They are all capable of releasing a perfect camera, but why kill off sales…? Keep releasing cameras with slight improvements, a cripple here and there never giving you the full package so you keep coming back for the next release…
I think the Sony A7siii is more of a full frame GH5 than the S5. Hear me out..... I currently shoot on the S1H, GH5, and GH5s. I also have a couple Sony A7iii’s. Just because it’s Lumix doesn’t make it the “full frame GH5”. No All-I, micro hdmi, recording time limits? These are features that made the GH5 a boss. Also, the S5 is considered a “hybrid camera” good for photo and video. The GH5 was never directed towards photographers- the GH5 is not a hybrid camera. I feel like the Sony A7siii is more of a “full frame GH5” than the S5.
No, the only issues we noticed in post where the compression artefacts from IPB. Any banding you are seeing is a result of further RUclips compression. Jake
Does that mean that the external raw recording uses the full sensor for its 4k 60p? Or is it still croped? And if I record externally in ProRes 422 4k 60p is there a crop? I#m getting really confused here^^ Thanks
IN all these years, I've yet to see one, not even one youtuber to make an anamorphic feature film. Nobody makes anamorphic films from the youtube crowd, and it's just a toy to gush over, and never use. It's all bullshit filmmaking hype for all the reviewers, when none of the audience watching and following them has yet to make a feature film with a DSLR camera, save the big guys like Shane Hurlbut. That's it. Sony, Canon, Panasonic, pick your model, they have all never been used to make a feature film by the fan boys. It's just a new toy, that's all.
Probably because anamorphic is very annoying to watch to be honest. I hate it. It's like watching an advertising banner on a 16:9 screen. The sexy girl waiting for me 30mins away is also displayed in an anamorphic mode. Not everyone owns a 2.35 ratio monitor, and on phones, it's throwing away so much screen real estate. Anamorphic should be left to the big boys, who display it on big screens. 2:1 is the best way to go especially for social media publishing.
why all vlogers and ambassadors compare S5 with Gh5? Not with Sony A7iii, not with the Nikon or Canon or finally S1? wtf? You'r the 10th do the same! It's "training manual" from Panasonic with S5? Gh5 was great camera without tones paid reviewer and marketing tricks. S5 case is the last drop of loyalty to Panasonic. 30min of useless work..
You clearly didn't watch the video as I compare the form factor to the S1h and GH5 in the first couple of minutes. But the image comparisons were with the R5 and a7siii. Jake
I even say in the video that all three brands are closer than ever now when it comes to stabilisation. The system that Canon have implemented on the R5/R6 may just take it as the best though.
TL;DW: Short answer, NO. It's yet another overhyped full-frame mirrorless camera that's utterly incompatible with Micro Four Thirds. Oh but wait, it has "Lumix" stamped on it, such synergy!
Got to say, I have never seen such a great, informative and deep review. Awesome job, thumbs up!

Man I legit forgot about this one😭
It's hard to keep up with all of the product releases currently!! Thanks for watching man! Jake
And twice the price...yeah.
May I use Canon lenses on S5 ?
Yeah you can use the Sigma MC-21 to adapt from L to EF! Jake
@@CVPTV no continuous autofocus though. :(
4k 60 internal by firmware update/? 10 bit full sensor??? NO CROP please...
Hi what kut and video mode did you use on @2:42 Mark?
Wait does the s5 band and artifact with the internal 10bit codecs though?
No, the only issues we noticed in post where the compression artefacts from IPB. Any banding you are seeing is a result of further RUclips compression. Jake
Is focus transition feature available in S5?
Does this still have touch to focus like on the gh5?
Yes it does. Jake
Is it possible to output 24p or 30p through hdmi in 422 10 bit? Or is it just 50/60p?
Does that mean that the external raw recording uses the full sensor for its 4k 60p? Or is it still croped?
And if I record externally in ProRes 422 4k 60p is there a crop? I#m getting really confused here^^
Thanks
Still cropped
I can't seem to find the link to the LUTs that you mentioned.
Sorry forgot to add them! They are now in description or you can use this link here - we.tl/t-Gee11oQabQ
SONY PLS DO NO FLIP-OUT-SCREEN ON THE a7IV !!!
Why?
Flip out screens are the way to go. Tilt screens suck, for photos and videos both.
😍😍😍
IS there a Focus Transition function in S5?
hi~ Your picture is so pretty and attractive. Can you share the LUT on your raw photo?
As in the processing we did on the still imagery?
Yo since when does Scott Wozniak make videos about cameras?
Too bad it doesn't have unlimited recording at 4K 60P

It's hard to believe that in the year 2020, Panasonic is still making manual focus cameras.
Full V-Log??
Yeah it's regular Vlog, would have said Vlog-L otherwise! Jake
@@CVPTV Great! Awesome review as always!
Thanks Ben! Jake
I pray panasonic fix the autofocus. Hire some nerds from sony and get it done.
No 4k120fps no new hole in my bank.
GH6.....
I made this cinematic video with the S5:

why all vlogers and ambassadors compare S5 with Gh5? Not with Sony A7iii, not with the Nikon or Canon or finally S1? wtf? You'r the 10th do the same! It's "training manual" from Panasonic with S5? Gh5 was great camera without tones paid reviewer and marketing tricks. S5 case is the last drop of loyalty to Panasonic. 30min of useless work..
You clearly didn't watch the video as I compare the form factor to the S1h and GH5 in the first couple of minutes. But the image comparisons were with the R5 and a7siii. Jake
i was wrong sorry. bombs me last day from S5, but #FullFrameGH5 tag here wrong
Luck of IBIS.
Luck?
it`s not functional IBIS.
@@dimitrimoonlight Have to disagree with you there! What makes you say that though?
@@CVPTV compare to sony, canon and recent panasonic cameras.
That autofocus is crap.
