my marine husband and myself received tickets to this event. no one can image what it is like until you attend it yourself. So proud of all the soldiers. Ones we talked with had already served two tours overseas and wanted to go back. God bless the Marines!
My son was stationed at 8th & I for 2 years. I actually got to witness The Friday Evening Parade. If you've never seen it, you should. EVERY American should.
I've had the privilege of seeing/hearing the President's Own several times and they are doubtlessly one of the best bands I've ever heard. I'm an old bandsman but never with a band like this. BRAVO
Man, what a motivating post! it represents all of us current and former Marines and all of our brothers and sisters that never made it back home from all the wars. To all of you that put us down, sad that you will never understand the pride and priviledge of serving our beloved U.S. of A! Former Marine Grunt Semper Fi!
Best military musicians in the world! Retreat at the end brings tears to my eyes. I was forced to retire because I reached age 60, so you younger guys take up my slack! The flag has been stained with tears and blood, but it will NEVER fade. Hoooah! A retired MSG...........
I played in the field band at Quantico from 1981-1983 as a trumpet player. We used this same arrangement of Retreat whenever we had an evening parade (not THE Evening Parade, of course) down there. Always brought a trickle to my eye whenever we sounded Retreat. Semper Fi.
sqz834 - If you're not willing to stand behind the troops, please feel free to stand in front of them. This is an awesome clip. Outstanding. Best military musical organization anywhere...ever.
More than likely, they were honoring the different services of the armed forces. They also played Anchors Aweigh and Semper Paratus, and of course The Marines' Hymn and the end.
@Jusgrowinup it is because they fly the flag that was flying when the barracks were built it has 15 stripes and stars and stripes the 15th state at the time was Kentucky
U. S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corps....all have gone through Marine Boot Camp before coming to Washington, D.C. Anyone who has not yet done so must get to Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C. and witness the Friday Night Parade. It is free and on top of things to do.
hey people trying to find some info. my son just graduate from infantry in the marines and is station at Washington DC barracks. If anyone has comments i would love to hear them about the place
Congratulations! Ceremonial Marines stationed in DC have to be the cream of the top. My son was there from 2001-2005, in the Drum and Bugle Corps. The other musical unit is the Marine Band. There is also the Silent Drum Platoon, and two units (Companies A and B). They practice hard, and in the summer perform every Fri night, rain or shine, for the public (free - but better get there early to be sure to get a seat). It is not only an amazing show... the audience will learn some basic history of the Corps as well. They used to practice in Dallas, I believe, 13 hour days, during the winter. They also travel throughout the US and in other countries. They used to perform at the State Fair in Dallas every year. The barracks are at 8th and I St's in DC. They are Marines first and musicians second. The musicians are recruited to be musicians, but know that they can be deployed if needed, and get the same basic training as any other Marine. These young men and women are disciplined and polite, and inspire patriotism!! The Drum and Bugle Corps also performs at the Iwo Jima Memorial at Arlington every Tues. afternoon during the summers.. at least they used to.(budget cuts in the Obama administration). My son went to boot camp an 18 yr. old boy... and came home a disciplined, respectful young man. Facebook has a page about 8th and I Marines, and there are websites about Marine Corps history... Google!
@ATLtripulacion I heard a young marine once respond to a female reporter's question about what he felt about possibly being sent into harm's way. He responded, "Ma'am, we're United States Marines. We ARE harm's way.
I like how the drum major is wearing a bearskin cap and the fact that all drum majors in the US armed forces wear one. Not sure to the history behind it, but probably related to British colonial times.
Yep. It is the York'scher Marsch. However, maybe not by Beethoven. It is one of those attributed to Beethoven and given a temporary WOo number. It is of questionable origin.
No. Not the "Yorkshire March". This is the great imperial Prussian "Hohenfriedburger Marsch". It was written by none other than Frederick the Great, Emperor of Prussia.
dgk, the point that bjorn was trying to make is that our orders come from politicians, civillians. We do not decide to "have a war, and attack". Civillians have us do it!!! =Stefan=
I don't hate the military, but "we r just following orders" is a crap reason to do anything. Responsibility is not something you can take off like a jacket.
FACT: Marines cannot pass the Army entrance exam which is why they are forced to draw a pay check from the Navy Dept. Rather sad when you think about it.

This is a great show that runs through the Summer months in Washington DC. I've attended many times, and never get tired of watching it.

I hope every American can get a chance to see the Evening Parade at The Marine Barracks here in Washington, DC. Thanks! For posting this video!
Enjoy it a lot...Thank you for posting this...Perfection at it's best....Thanks again.

Makes me even prouder, if that's possible, to be one of the few, the proud, a Marine. Semper Fidelis!!!!
Every American should get a chance see this at least once, in person.
Their performance of "Retreat" at the end was the best version I've ever heard.

i went yesterday it was CRAZY!! i love the marines !
so pleased that when I served at the Pentagon I attended this lovely tattoo
1st march is one my favorites, "Marsch des Yorckschen Korps" by Luwig van Beethoven".
awesome
More than likely, they were honoring the different services of the armed forces. They also played Anchors Aweigh and Semper Paratus, and of course The Marines' Hymn and the end.
I really hope they'll play the Yorckscher Marsch more often :)
@Jusgrowinup it is because they fly the flag that was flying when the barracks were built it has 15 stripes and stars and stripes the 15th state at the time was Kentucky
It is indeed the York'scher Marsch by Beethoven. The Hohenfriedberger Marsch is totally different.

Playing the Yorkshire March in the beginning.
When ever i hear the US Marine Corp Band play, the sprit of every marine who ever wore the uniform marches with them oohraa
It's Beethoven's Yorkshire March, I believe.
Tell Ya what!!! The Jarheads rocked here!! Thats coming from a US Sailor!
I mean "Marsch des Yorck'schen Korps." Apparently "Yorkshire March" is a different song.
kl vid!
in the film "Stars and stripes forever" it said that Sousa was the leader and composer that was in charge of this band, is that true?

No better friend, no worse enemy, than the United States Marines.
