This feels like a nice follow-up to Escape, where we see almost the entire episode done in a more doodle-esque style, but this time, we've got four different art styles in a D&D-esque quest: Bluey's cartoony style that we first saw in Escape, Bandit's which looks like something out of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Bingo's even more cartoony style, and Chilli's Miyazaki-level style, despite her modesty towards it. This episode's a nice mixture of funny, wholesome, and bittersweet, and is probably remembered best for finally showing us, and letting us hear, Chilli's mother. It's sweet how she inspired her daughter to not give up on drawing, even if she found it difficult at first. Of course, with Chilli talking about her in the past tense, and the fact that we've never seen her in any present-day episodes, it's clear that she's passed away. That fact not only adds an extra layer of sad to the ending, when Chilli bids farewell to her horse, representing her thanking her mother for encouraging her, but also adds one to Grandad. Chilli's desperation to have Mort rest after his surgery and saying she 'still needs him' hits deeper now. She'd already lost her mother. She doesn't want to lose her dad before his time too... Also, poor Bluey and Bandit, Bluey for feeling reluctant about eventually getting to the dragon, if she's not confident it'll be recognizable as one, and Bandit for giving up on his passion for drawing when he was teased about it in school. It's so easy to feel discouraged against doing something you enjoy just because others judge you or make fun of you for it, but if it's something you genuinely enjoy, you shouldn't let the judgment of others turn you away from it. No one's perfect at first, but if you keep practicing, you'll find your style. I don't draw as much as I used to as a kid, and feel more comfortable with writing these days, but I still enjoy drawing from time to time.
Thank you for pointing out how this episode is similar to “Perfect”. I didn’t actually realize that until you said it, but you’re right: Bluey is insecure about her drawing ability. She tries to draw one thing and it looks like something else. But it wasn’t until I saw this video that I thought to compare it to “Stories”. Indy had difficulty making her beeswax horse look like a horse. But in that episode, Indy was about to consider having her horse be a cow instead-but Winton wasn’t having it, insisting that it was a horse and just needed to look like a horse. Here, Bandit decided that his horse that looked like a donkey really was a donkey-and Bluey decided that her first dragon, the one that looked like Humpty Dumpty, actually was Humpty Dumpty (although later she drew a dragon that looked like a dragon).
This episode was a definite treat... what's there not to love about this one?! The experimentation, the conglomeration of different artsyles, the D&D esque-atmosphere and quest, the spot-on humor and 80's references, the encouragement message around never giving up (and focusing it about art makes it even more relatable!), the context delivered around Mrs. Cattle and her departure, Chilli still coping around the tragedy, the symbology around the horse spreading wings and becoming a pegasus ascending to the skies... JUST GOLDEN!!! 10/10 FOR REAL LIFE!!!
this episode, Dragon, ties with Curry Quest for me as my 2nd favorite episodes in the entire show. i love so much how it shows how feedback can affect one's approach to art, the way its animated in all their different drawing styles also looks absolutely beautiful and especially, the symbolism about Chili's mom, the way the horse that represented her flew away at the end as a way to indicate Chili finally coming to terms with her mother's death (probably why she has only mentioned her _once_ before), all of that makes this episode so so powerful. also looking back now to episodes like _Sleepytime_ or _Granddad_ that are back to back funnily enough, some of the things Chili said, _"even if you can't see me"_ and _"I still need him"_ take a completely different meaning
In today episode of Bluey: the family is playing D&D while discovering their family back story. For Bandit, oh dear, we never would forgive Bucky Duston. For Chilli, it pretty sad that her children never got a chance to meet their granmother on their mom side. It remind me of my granfather on my father side, he die before my father could got married.
This one aired last year on Mother’s Day in Australia. I watched it just after visiting my mum’s grave, so it was bittersweet to see the confirmation about Chilli’s mum using the flashback of her being encouraging to her. Bingo’s chaos got me laughing, of course.
This is just my theory, going back to the Fairy Tale episode. Number One, yes, I believe that was Chili cosplaying as She-Ra. However, the reason Chili doesn't recall meeting it was around the time Chili lost her mom. It was their last time together and sometimes grief and loss can cause changes in one's memory. So, because losing her mom was so shocking she may have just wanted to block it out (those last days together were just too painful). This is also a call back to the episode "Grand Dad," and why Cili wanted her dad (Mort) to rest after just having surgery. Also, the episode "Baby Race" and why Chili didn't go to her mom for advice. Because new moms look to their mothers for advice and as a template for how to raise their kids. Chili didn't do that she went to Chris (Bandit's mom), the internet, and her mother's group.
