The reasons why it is difficult to understand some native English speakers :
    1) They talk funny 2) They speak quickly 3) They combine words 4) They have regional accents 5) They use slang 6) They don't speak classroom English 7) They use age communication 8) Their grammar is informal
    9) Their pronunciation is not clear 10) They use phrasal verbs / idioms

most of the points are found in learning any language. So you find it useful if english is the FIRST foraigner language you deal with. BUT, what it really stands out is the difference in accents in great britain, the difference between GB and the USA(whose regional accents are quite soft) and the main factor: the distance between writen and spoken english. I would add the the tendency speaking quite informal in the USA even in quite formal or professional enviroments.

Mollie Tai You forgot to say they speak incorrectly by pronouncing the words wrong and using a bad gramma, just like me do in english.
This happen mainly in the USA and in Africa.

I speak English fluently now (Or so I'd like to think) and I learned most of my formal and correct English from watching TV shows and movies in English with closed captions. That actually helped me develop my current American accent that I have, to the point where many young people when I was younger used to tell me I sounded "too White". As I became older and became exposed to real English speakers, I noticed that most people, especially here in NYC, actually speak very colloquial and many times, grammatically incorrect English. I started to become more familiarized with slang, local words and they slowly started to seep into my own speech. Now, instead of saying "isn't" sometimes I say "ain't" instead of saying "ask" sometimes I say "aks" instead of saying "I think so" sometimes I say "ah think so", for "you all" I say "y'all". I am fully aware these are only incorrect and colloquial ways of saying it and most of the time I am very conscious when I say it and when to use it and around whom but sometimes, my "New York-ness" takes over and I speak incorrect colloquial English, especially when I'm stressed out or speak with someone who speaks in urban vernacular or has a heavy NY accent but when I am at work and I am explaining something to a client, I speak correct standard English. I also speak slower and more clearly when I am speaking with an ESL person with flimsy English skills. I currently have some sort of hybrid White/African American New York accent when I speak English as I do work with mostly African American people and have for more than 13 years, not to mention, I attended college for an additional four years with many of them. I am actually quite proud of my accent. Most people can't even tell I'm Latino when I speak over the phone as I made sure I eliminated that accent completely while learning English.

    • @jsphat81
      @jsphat81 7 лет назад +3

+Shabbir khan Watch TV and movies in English with closed captions so you can read what they are saying while you speak, then try watching the same TV show and movie, this time without the caption and see how much you understand. Also, speak as often as possible with native speakers. Listen to English music with the lyrics as well. Those are just some tips.

100 percent agree. a good example to me (I'm Spanish) are movies and TV shows. I push myself to watch Netflix in English to improve my listening, it's freaking frustrating, because normally I can only catch isolated words and phrases, but cant't follow the dialogs. So I must rely in english subtitles.

I like when you said, "Do you follow me here?", as a question that a native speaker would know that you did not mean to literally follow you around, but whether or not they understood your question. I've worked with English as a 2nd language students, and sometimes they do tend to struggle because of the natural way native speakers use English. Mostly they just nod their heads because they do not understand and do not want to be seen as "stupid". I always tell them, if they don't understand, don't hesitate to stop and ask for clarification.

Regarding "classroom English": well, almost half a century ago, in my high school in Zagreb, Croatia (then Yugoslavia) we used to stage little sketches lifted from TV sitcoms (both British and American), but also did Shakespearian dialogues. Our lecturer went to great pains to point to us the differences between various versions of formal English as well as different vernaculars and accents. Perhaps I was just lucky to have an exceptionally good teacher, but I certainly was not taught "We write?" I hope your objectives here are more ambitious than "We write?"

Hey guys, don't you realize that all those RUclips english teachers deliberately speak so clearly and understandably to boost your ego to give you the impression your English is quite good so you sibscribe to their channels. It's not only the pronunciation, it's also the simple vocabulary they use not to overwhelm you. I also watch from time to time their videos just to relax, it's a really goog feeling to comprehend everything completely, but I know it's only illusion of having aquiered a good knowledge of English language. Guys be honest to yourself and bring yourself face to face with the real English. I listen for example a lot to bbc documentary broadcasts, that's not easy, the subjects are sometime complecated, you hear absolutely various pronunciations ect. I listen to literature audio books, Dostojewski, George Orwell, Steffen Zweig not just fairy tales. It's a challenge, challenging yourself you develop your skills!

Gabby I can understand 100% what you say!... Funny because I understand word by word. I can understand where a word ends and start another one, in this way the sound of your words is easy to understand .... Other people I can not distinguish words and is a mixture of sounds. When they speak and the words come together, I lose myself trying to understand. Most of times I start an inside conversation by asking my self questions like : How many words did he say? This sound is one or two words together ? And the more I think the less I understand.... I end up understanding 50% of what they say and sometimes less and sometimes more, but it depends a lot on the subject and the accent of the person. I do not understand many times is the accent because often i knowing the vocabulary , funny .... I sometimes know the words but the accent of the people seems different words and two words together may seem like a new word for me.
What you spoke the same vocabulary said by certain English person i would understand 60% percent ... But with your voice the clarity of your accent is so much that I do not have to do a translation for my language. I think I'm opening one more box in my mind and my English went up one more step with you just try to be relaxed and I hear everything and I understand very well .... The subject also helps because I know what you are talking about so I can master without having to translate and a vocabulary that I master well .... Thankyou

5 common reasons why it's hard to understand Native English Speakers:
    1. Pronunciation
    2. They combine words together
    3. They speak so fast that you feel words are cut off
    4. They use a lot of phrasal verbs
    5. They use a lot of idioms/slangs
I wish that everybody speaks like you lol. Good video thanks

Hi, I am a native eater of Nutella ( that is, italian). Maybe because for you non-native speakers=immigrants. If like me you are a native speaker of a romance language and you have learned english reading books and newspaper, it is just the opposite, formal english is easier ( and more latinate). Bigger bitch are phrasal verbs, idiomatic and slang you can learn, but PV are also difficult to remember.

accents do change without you knowing depending on where you lived such as: if you were born in England but moved to Germany and you said "hello" it can change to "hallo" just because you've grown to understand that,
don't let it get to you too much because most people have that on different levels of severity and on how many places they've lived in

I have a combo of a southern, northern and Southern Californian accent, I grew up in the south with siblings from the north while playing Xbox games with a kid from Cali where I later ended up living, now I'm back in Arkansas and people always wonder where I'm from, when I tell them I'm from here they don't believe me haha, people in Cali assumed I was from the Midwest, the main give away that I'm southern is the slang I say and that often don't end my ing words with a g, I also don't say going to (unless I'm going somewhere) but rather gonna or fixin ta, example instead of saying going to go get the groceries, I say I'm gonna get the groceries, or I'm fixin ta get the groceries, you can use fixin other ways, like I'm fixin a drink, or you could also say in a command fix me a sandwich, I also say y'all about 50% of the time and you guys the other 50%, my general way of speaking lacks a southern drawl and I pronounce my words very clearly unless I'm really drunk, then I can sound like I'm from the south.

I believe for the below reasons:-
    - They speaking really fast.
    - the accent is different what we have learned in our home country since our teachers was not native speakers.
    - Finally, our listening skills need more time to be adapte with the native speakers.

Nobody can learn much English from a book- all books do is confuse the hell out of students with demented spelling rules that always have exceptions, and horrible, intimidating grammar that no English speaker worries about too much. Just relax, most people are patient if you fumble around trying to say what you're thinking, and won't worry if you mess up the grammar or pronunciation.
I'll tell you a secret: English grammar is so flexible that no matter how you mess it up, you can usually be understood.. Watch lots of TV, that gets you acclimatized to the speech patterns and slang expressions ( of which there are thousands).
English is spoken by a billion people, and every English -speaking country has its own varieties, so there is NOT one way to speak the language- they are ALL equally valid. Forget about your accent, because it doesn't matter. To my ears, the most incomprehensible English speakers are the Scots ( some of them) and English is their native language!
The other secret is to cease wondering "WHY??" about the spelling. We all know it's insane, and there is NO reason for its craziness except that we don't have enough letters in the alphabet to express all the sounds.
Go on, dive in! The water is warm and the locals are friendly!
Good luck. I wish you well, because I've done a few languages and know how hard it can be.

One of the problems that we had a few years past in our study of the English language in Syria was the negligence of running useful conversations while in class .The authors of school curriculums chose to concentrate on the study of English literature instead which as a result made the students perform poorly in conversation . However these video clips of yours and the likes help us immensly in getting better skills concerning English conversation. Unlucky me I hsd not known about your video clips before .

Watching movies with English subtitles is good in the beginning, but later it can slow down your progress, as you get used to rely on your reading skills instead of listening skills. So, as long, as you are comfortable with subtitles, turn them off and try to rely only on your listening skills. Also, I noticed that my listening skills get worse when I'm tired, so, it's, obviously, not a good time to listen to hard English accents.

Some reflection: In particular, this used to be the case for me with a lot of British accents. There is the standard received pronunciation which is extremely easy to understand, but then there are the actual spoken dialects, the ways people Actually speak the language, and those are two completely different things.
Typically in British dialects, they have an extravagant use of guttural diftongs (especially those pronounced ay, ey and oy). Then add to that the fact that native speakers tend to use their own local slang, and especially so in urban British areas (at least from my experience). In fact, sometimes they change the meaning of already existing words, so that for instance, pissed becomes drunk instead of upset. An example of usage of these dialects would be the Monty Python sketches. That is in contrast to the received pronunciation that radio broadcasters use which emphasizes dental diftongs (those pronounced ow, ew, etc) and long vowels making phrases sound like they are sung. They try to avoid the use of slang, and stick to the proper definition of the words. For another famous movie example, this is how Emma Watson speaks in Harry Potter.
Thus, the way English uses dialects seems different from other languages. In English, people seem to learn to speak both their own version of received pronunciation as well as their local dialect, and then switch between them all the time. To contrast this with an opposite that is also a Germanic language, Swedish (my native language) also makes use of dialects. Here, however, people only learn what dialect should the be received pronunciation and how it should sound, but never learns to speak it themselves, and instead sticks to their own dialect at all times. This forces all of the dialects to stay similar for pragmatic communication reasons, and any new words to be introduced nationwide almost overnight. I believe that this is also why the three Scandinavian languages all have remained quite similar to each other, despite having been different languages for just as long as the Romance languages have.

Neelix99: No such a thing as British English, and no such a thing as American English. There's English....all others are bastardized versions of the original.

Native English (US) speaker here and I have a hard time understanding 100% of some of those accents as well, especially people from Glasgow.

Neelix99: No such thing as American English, nor British English. It's English plain and simple.

Thanks, teacher. I loved your accent, it is pretty clear and I could understand more than 90% and I'm so excited 'cause I've learning English since last year and I've never imagined that. I like watching vlogs to improve it, I can understand kind of 50%/70% but I think my problem it is the phrasal verbs, Americans natives speakers use them often. Cya, teacher. Now you have a new Brazilian subscriber :D

I think that one of the problems of the lack of of understanding is due to the strict form how learners use the foreign phonological system. Warm regards from Mexico! ;)

I love the way you take pauses while speaking English, and pronunciation part is emphatic for us to be able to emulate.
