Once Romania became a powerhouse in gymnastics 🤸‍♂️ they didn’t show as much footage of the DDR women. I appreciate this post very much. I always loved Thummbler’s floor exercise. The German women all had such nice form on the asymmetric bars. The asymmetric bars portion of this footage was definitely the highlight.

Sehr guter Kommentar auch von Eckhard Herholz, mit schöner Stimme und guter Wortwahl.

Christianne Tomms was the alternate of the GDR-Olympic team in Seoul 1988

I wonder why Astrid Heese didnt get that spot, she was a better gymnast than Sheiferdecker.

In "vintage" Gymnastics athletes had much superior form and technique than today's athletes. Today it is all about powerful thumbling

Form and technique of the top athletes of today is better than in the 1980s. That’s why they can do much more difficult routines in all events and are competing much longer than the top gymnasts in the 80s. The real difference is that there is no longer a monopoly on coaches by couple of nations and the training is now much more demanding in muscle strength.

Form and technical perfection was far, far superior in the 1980s compared with today. Objective fact. The EQUIPMENT is considerably better, as is the technical training. But form, technique, choreography, grace, creativity were all inestimably better then.

Absolutely - Today's gymnastics is ugly and boring! All but The Chinese gymnasts are carrying way too much muscle - which is never going to make them graceful and elegant. The ballet classes of old have ceased. Everyone is doing routines that are identical and predictable - with no sign of anyone wanting to break the mould! FIG got rid of The compulsories - which was a travesty and have basically destroyed Artistic Gymnastics sadly! I am so relieved that we have RUclips to remember how beautiful the sport once was.

Whatever happened to Christiane Thomms? She was part of the 1989 worlds team ,then disappeared

Well, she grew a lot and couldnt do much in terms of tumbling, and did not do well at the 89 worlds. By that time, the likes of Anke Schonfelder and Kathleen Stark were much stronger gymnasts, and Thomms really was a one event gymnast, and the judges got tired of their double twists!

The commentator said that she “recently” moved from Cottbus to Berlin..Just like Dagmar Kersten,Antje Wilkenloh and Ulrike Klotz. That was bad news for her, because SV Berlin was a club where there was a lot of abuse and doping
