I'm glad Phoebe competed in '88 and won an Olympic medal. Great gymnast and great girl

I wish this broadcast would have had more gymnastics. They had way too much fluff pieces.

I know; it was about 90% talk and 10% actual gymnastics. And the American Cup coverage is still like that today.

That's basically every American Cup. Ever.

They only show the last few rotations of this meet no matter what year it is.

Olga's extreme cowboying on her saltos was extreme even for the 80's

So was her risk and innovation 😍

Bart was saying that Phoebe barely edged out Hope Spivey for the second American spot in the finals. That is untrue. Spivey actually had a horrible meet and fell on two events. She miraculously scored a 9.95 on the vault, but was awful on everything else. What he is referring to is actually Jennifer Sey, who was her usually steady mediocre self ( 9.5-9.7) and was the second American Phoebe needed to beat to make the finals. Phoebe fell in the bars prelims, otherwise she would have been the leader in the qualifications. I think the US coaching and judging staff was just beginning to understand that Kristie was no longer the top gymnast in the country and would soon be eclipsed by Phoebe. Both, however, shit the bed at worlds later in the year, and were eclipsed by basically everyone who wore a leotard in Rotterdam. Phobe got her act together in 1988 and really emerged as the best in the US and developed into a beautiful gymnast for the last year of her career

I wish kristy and phoebe had been able too keep this form all the way through worlds. Their year just went downhill from here

What a joke. Stracheva was light years ahead of both of them.

      seer16 Olga’s floor was a mess.

The venerable tradition of stupid biased scoring in Scam continues! 9.70 for Strazheva...that's ridiculous. Her tumbling was exceptional, despite the problems on dismount.

You know and I know the biased judging was more than made up for in all of the European Competitions. The Americans weren't really given credit internationally even when they performed well.

I probably would have scored 9.8. Would that have been enough for gold? ETA: I see it would have. She probably should have played it safe and done a double tuck dismount.

I agree she was way underscored on floor. Sure she could have been cleaner on the dismount but the overall tumbling was more difficult and her dance is a lot more impressive.

CBS did awful coverage except for Kristie Phillips' little pouting session over her fair score. PUH-LEAZE!!!!!

Good lord I got 20 minutes in and they'd shown two routines.

It will always be a shame Strazheva injured herself during optional beam at the Olympics and couldn't compete on floor. She likely could have had the double front named for her 😢

Omigod! A kiss on the lips from the coach! Who cares, that's Eastern European culture. You'd think Bart would know that, what with competing against these guys in the past.

Remember, this video is 30 years old. Americans weren't as familiar with Eastern European culture. That part cracked me up!

Lisa Vega No, that's not it. Bart is a gymnast from that time that competed against the Soviets numerous times. Of course he would know that was the custom.

littlestarinthesky_312 Yeah, Bart knows; I was saying (most) Americans weren't familiar, so he included that little bit in his broadcast to them.

As late as the 2000 Olympis, the male coaches would kiss the male gymnasts on the lips! Russian only of course

Me parece favoritismo a Kristie Phillips por estar en su país. En mundial no pudo ganar medallas y no fue olímpica. Olga la mejor
