Today, getting what you need is as easy as a trip to the store. From food to clothing, energy, medicine, and so much more, Andy George will discover what it takes to make everything from scratch. His mission is to understand the complex processes of manufacturing that is often taken for granted and do it all himself. Each week he’s traveling the world to bypass the modern supply chain in order to harvest raw materials straight from the source. Along the way, he’s answering the questions you never thought to ask.

maybe a series on " how to sharpen an axe" should be next
Big Bad Nick 1967 #roasted
Big Bad Nick 1967 he is using splitting axe, not a cutting one
An entire series. Nice
Imagine he tried daily videos
Or how to swing and axe like a man
What your woodpulp paper lacks is glue. If you catch fishes you can easily make fish glue that will hold it together even with non-disolved pulp like the one you're using.
+Oscar Barda great idea Oscar! Maybe we'll try that in a follow up video
I had no idea you could make glue from fish. Wow!
You can use okra root as well.
Okra root to make glue? Never heard of it so… Okra is a plant? and how do you make glue out of it?
Do you know of any natural whitening agents? :)
+Oscar Barda It's not truly a glue as it is a fixation aid. I use it with mulberry fiber. In washi paper making it is called Neri. The root is pounded, and then soaked overnight. The mucilage is then strained to remove the root bits. Add it at the end of your slurry right before you pull. Mix gently.
It is authentically supposed to be made with a different variety of okra but since I haven't seen it gown in North America regular okra will have to do.
I don't know any natural whiteners sorry!
watching you struggle to chop down that tiny ass tree was the best part.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.
I bet you can't even swing an axe
@@cooorsbanq4226 you got me lol, not like i haven't spent a few years developing my bushcraft skills or anything :P or 4 years digging in M777 Howitzers lol

How to make a book:
Kill a cow,
collect its leather,
Make some paper,
Get a crafting table,
Put the sugar cane in the middle of 2 leather pieces.

Kill a cow
Collect its leather (if it drops any)
Collect sugar cane
Convert sugar cane to paper
Mix both paper and leather together
You have your book!
@@canofsouls282 yep
its awesome that you are doing this, but the way you swung that axe is just hilarious
+Rok Povse that axe was soooo dull, shit sharpen it please :p cool vid too :D
any axe regardless of size must be sharp, now a carving axe should be razor sharp , a big axe should be at least paper cutting sharp, and his handle looks, well, not the best
And his chopping axe was totally a battle axe
actually no, it was a so called double bit axe, one side is razor sharp for chopping trees the other is for chopping ruts of the tree, battle axes were single edged and usually had a pretty long cutting surface, like viking broad axes
+Rok Povse oh thanks actually, I'm trying to learn more about the outdoors and things

But does parchment moisturize?
I can tell that was his first time cutting down a tree with an axe 🤣
Would have done better if it was properly sharpend. You can tell from the hollow thunking noise it was bouncing off rather than biteing in.
It bounced off the tree

1. Sharpen axe.
2. Tie/tuck-in scarf loose-ends or even better; don't wear a scarf while using a sharp axe.
Why not wear a scarf? For the heat? Or am I missing something
@@ghostnoodle9721 because it's like doing anything physical with yer shoes untied or yer hair undone covering yer eyes. Unless ya wrap the scarf round tightly & tie/tuck-in the loose ends buuut... he didn't.

3:58 that moment when you try to remember the last time you sharpened your axe...
Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe. Abraham Lincoln
i believe with a dubble headed axe one side is kept dull the other sharp for different tasks and he was using the wrong end
Yea i can take down trees like that with my cold steel tomahawk 😂
Chris Mennega, one side had a thinner edge making it sharper and cut deeper but more fragile and will dull faster. And for denser wood, the other end would usually have a thicker edge with a steeper grind angle for a more durable edge
That was not weaving the papyrus 😂 no wonder it fell apart. You just placed them on top of one another
Also the papyrus was originaly cut into strips about one milimeter wide
Howie Michaels true. Everything here was horrible: the cutting, the weaving, the scraping, the cutting of the tree, general lack of a careful, planned approach etc.
Wanted to watch a bit about papermaking, so I gave this video a shot, but it's just a random dude with horrible practical skills lacking the theoretical basics, too.
Well, I guess practice makes perfect; normally the order would be practice then make video. Oh well...

Yeah! That was not weaving at all lol. Its like you put water and grains together and hoped it turns out to be a bread later.

teresa nguyen It's because the guy, unfortunately, has no charisma whatsoever. He could work on it, although results wouldn't be guaranteed. If I were him, I'd let someone else host the show. I'd keep on producing and directing, and as such I'd probably multiply the number of subscribers.

Put the lotion in the basket!!!
"and let it dry in the sun" but puts it under a tree
step 1: find a silver birch
step 2: go up to the silver birch
step 3: find a strip of loose bark
step 4: go up to strip of loose bark
step 5: lift hand up
step 6: move hand forward towards bark
step 7: enclose fingers at he end of the loose bark
step 8: peel the direction the bark goes
step 9: take your hand away from tree
Now you have paper!
Birch , Far Superior to Aspen
a tip for if you have to cut down another tree. cut vertically at an angle instead of horizontally. gravity will help you, and the grain of the wood will also split easier, this way you will get much larger cuts with less effort.
the reason why your wood paper didnt work is beause you pasted it in the blender the paper gets its tensile strength from the longer fibers. also it would binded better if you did a month long soak of the raw wood plus lye water boil for 10plus hours before straining
I am guessing that is why in real papermaking only reduce the wood to woodchips instead of sawdust when they make paper then. I was curious about that.
my god what a dull axe

Duuude. You need starch water. And let the pulp "rot" for a week or so. It'll break down on its own. You can even bleach it after. It kind of feels like this was a relatively lower effort attempt.
Ok mr. Knowitall
Lower effort attempt? That's just insulting.
@@yurioswife3147 A little investigation would result in a better performance, he should have started with xuan paper made out of mulberry bark, there you could see that there is always some kind of fermentation in the process, aside that when making the paper sheet the solution is done by the fibre and some kind of colloidal solution like starch , linseed water, ibiscus gel or so.

That's a dull looking axe...
Just saying
Oh and the wood base paper you made lack adhesive sooooo of course it would break down and crumble
The woodpulp method of making paper is actually very recent. Most early paper in Europe was made of recycled linnen because the fibres are nice and long and mesh together well. A similar type of paper was made in China, Korea and Japan during the past. Though, instead of using linen, the tended to use rice stems, kozo bark or white mulberry bark.

He should have chopped at a 45 degree to start rather than hitting it flat many times
Wood pulp paper starts with 25 to 50mm wood chips that are torn lengthwise in mechanical pulpers especially for newsprint, note, torn not cut as a blender would do. Chemical pulping uses Sodium bisuphate to disolve the lignin.
Making paper out of cotton fiber is much easier (its just a thin cotton felt).

I LOVE UNDERTALE
I wish you never even fucking mentioned that
The biggest blunder with the wood paper was to grind it into dust into the blender: it did sever the fibers, and so they would not stick together, it's actually why paper is not recyclable more than a couple of times; once the fiber have gotten smaller than a certain threshold they would not hold together anymore.
Collect the lint from your dryer.
Mix that with bleach and your wood paste.
Drain the mixture in a shallow container and add a second round of bleach and water.
Use your screen to make a sheet of paper and press dry like the last wood sheet that you made.
I noticed your axe broke... You should make a new one. :)

If you grind the more fibrous bark along with the wood pulp, it holds together much better. Also adding things like alfalfa stalks or even animal hair to the pulp makes it adhere better

HOW TO IMPROVE ON THE WOOD PULP IDEA
If you add wood glue to the water or even elmer's school glue to the wood pulp method it will not fall apart. Make sure it's extra warm water so the glue dissolves evenly in it, add wood pulp, stir, then screen it, press and dry and it should make better paper that holds. I seen a person do the exact same steps with pulp of jeans to make new denim, the glue part is all you need. Idk how much glue to add but you'll need enough depending on how much water pulp you have, you may have to experiment with that part. Also careful when you press it, you add paper towel to soak the water, the glue may stick to the paper towel. Maybe you should press with the paper towel then remove the towel after a few seconds of being on the wood pulp, don't let it dry while on the wood pulp or it will stick, and then let it dry after that w/o any press on it. Or may be put saran wrap bet/ the wood pulp and press so it can dry while being pressed but won't stick, don't forget to saran wrap the underside as well.
Those chemicals added to paper are called sizing which is either an animal sizing like rabbit, gelatin sizing or a more modern PVA sizing. Sizing has been used for centuries. Which is what allows the fiberus particals to stick together and hold ink on top. Also. Trees are actually not very common material for paper. most papers old or modern are either made of cotton, which is archival, or lignin (plant fibers) which is acid free but will change color over time. chip board and card boards are pretty much the only wood pulp "paper" materials you'd find on the shelf. Papyrus And wood are the least archrival materials Becuasr of the amount of naturally occurring acid. The parchment, or animal skin works because it already has sizing in it.
The more you know.
Cheers
Its mildly infuriating to me, that he is using the axe wrong
