  • This is from the Penitentiary 3 Movie Soundtrack, released in 1987.
Midnight Star was a synth-funk band, whose most of its members are from Cincinnati, Ohio. The band had a string of R&B hits in the 1980s starting with their hit album and song of the same name, 'No Parking On The Dance Floor' in 1983.Their sound consisted of synthesizers, hi-tech keyboards, and vocoders that produced a cool and futuristic, funky r&b sound. The group was formed in 1976 at Kentucky State University, a Historical Black University in Frankfurt, Kentucky by trumpeter Reginald Calloway, and tromboner Vincent Calloway, singer Belinda Lipscomb, guitarist Melvin Gentry, bassist Kenneth Gant, multi-instrumentalist Bill Simmons, keyboard player Bo Watson and guitarist/keyboardist Jeff Cooper. Their other hits in the 1980s were 'Hot Spot', 'Electricity', 'Operator', 'Curious', 'Wet My Whistle', 'Freak-A-Zoid', 'Slow Jam', 'Red Roses','Headlines', 'Midas Touch', 'Dont Rock The Boat', and Do It One More Time. The group's popularity diminished due to the departure of the Calloway brothers who went solo. The group went on a long hiatus, but reunited in 2000, except for the Calloway brothers, have have been performing around the country from time to time ever since.

It would be funny to compare notes and see if it was the same dance; cause I know from time to time opinions can vary. I remember it as jumping back sort of rigidly (like an uptight preppy) shifting from left to right and jutting your hands outwardly under your chin and occasionally over your head.

Me too! Though it seems it had been out quite a while before this song came out.

Yes, I believe the dance originated before this song came out, and yes, the dance itself is definitely open to different variations, depending on the dancer. It is basically done like this: hands in front of chest for 2 beats, and then up in the air (on either side) for 2 beats. The arms can be raised, extended, lowered, or whatever. Really brings back memories!

I also recall it being done to slower tempo songs, like the speed of "The Pee Wee Herman" (although that song had it's own dance), "Fly Girl", and songs like that of that era.
