Nice video, Thanks. I am totally new to Raspberry Pi. Kindly allow me a question: can this Raspberry Pi run two applications simultaneously e.g. can it run "magic mirror" and Pi hole "ad- blocker" at the same time?
I'm precisely playing around with both a Raspberry Pi 1 and a 4 so I can help you. The device is a fully fledged ARM computer, so yes you can run different applications at the same time. The bottleneck lies in the resources, depending on the Pi version and the software you are planning to run. Pi 1 is ARM6 at 700Mhz with 256 or 512MB RAM while Pi 4 is ARM64 at 1.5Ghz with 2, 4 or 8GB RAM. In your specific case, even the oldest Raspberry will be easily able to run both and still have some available juice. I'm running PiHole myself without issues on a headless Pi 1, but I've had it connected to a TV as well. The Pi 1 only has 10/100 Ethernet but it seems more than enough to serve DNS for a small home office/lab. And if you're planning to buy a new one and get a version 3 or 4, you can run not two but many things from it. My Pi 4 runs dozens of containers without a hassle, it's a wonderful device to play around and experiment.
@@fetchstixRHD got you, that was one of my main objectives too. But I found that for a proper NAS with several HDDs on RAID, a Pi might not be enough. I have set it up as security camera, saltwater tank monitoring system along with Arduino, a 6 relay switch controller (I never implemented btw), a webserver, FTP server, and countless other projects. Does anyone know how to put the LCD display shield into a power saving mode and shut down display without having to uninstall the driver? I feel it is too much for the processor and to be streaming and serve as network device all the time. Hmmm maybe I will get a Pi 4 for all my other tasks.
Banana PI BPI-M64 is the open source hardware platform, Banana PI BPI-M64 is a quad-core 64 bit version of Banana Pi,use Allwinner A64 design, it support WIFI+BT on board.
Short answer is yes, absolutely. If you want to serve files you need Gigabit Ethernet so you will be fine with a Pi 3 or 4, depending on your expected load. But you will be connecting the drives to the USB ports so there's a max bandwidth to be shared. Also, storage drive speed will probably be the limiting factor, unless you use SSD. If you're thinking on a fully fledged 10-bay NAS with RAID, no that's not possible I think, there's a reason why those are so expensive. But still, there's so many things you can do with these tiny devices, I'd recommend everyone to try.
I just bought the latest Raspberry Pi 4. I'm hoping I have better luck than using the old one. One thing I find annoying about them is that the software never works right. The messages always say that the command isn't recognized. 🙄

I got it to toggle a BLE switchbot because they wanted 50 bucks for a hub to work with Alexa. Had it working in under an hour with a spare pi 3. Next thing I know I'm doing frontend lovelace YAML. The built in support is already amazing but when you add the community support, I get access to settings that won't even work with Alexa/Google assistant (natively). Then, to top it all of you can push it to both Alexa/Google assistant so you can use the SAME trigger words. Yes, to work externally (over the internet) then it's five bucks a month for the service to do so (first month free). Considering that they handle all the SSL certificate and domain for that much is actually a great deal considering what is involved. Will always work internally for free. You could set this up yourself for free to access externally but that's more involved. Especially now that it's works with the pi 4. Now, if they can get native USB boot to work then the 4 can handle faster small block sequential read than microSD cards. My pihole 4 logs and query lists load super fast.
