That I have explained my friends in Germany in the 1990s . The towerclocks of Elizabeth tower and St Michaelis church tower ( " Michel ") are big . The clock face at "michel " is larger , also clock-and minute hands . Highest respect for the guys who constantly maintain the clockworks in London , Hamburg and anywhere.

Unfortunately, the Alster has not been frozen for more than 12 years, so there is no longer any fun on the Alster.
When the ice is an average thickness of 20 cm+, the Alster is open for entry, stalls (drinks + food), and ice sports.
The old Elbe tunnel is closed to car traffic (until further notice); until the new Elbe tunnel opened in 1975, the old tunnel was one of the main connections by car into and through the (regular) port area. Please note: customs controls may also take place on the port side. :)

So nice that the tunnel was so clean and bright - no graffiti there! 30 yrs ago when I lived in Germany, Aldi was a revelation. It was a bit different back then, but still as marvellous. When I moved back to Australia 16 years ago I discovered the new version of Aldi, with all the furniture, seasonal clothes and electronics. It gets pretty busy when the new stuff arrives. Over the years, its busy-ness has put me off shopping there. Like Tia, I prefer nature and the quiet spaces.

To me real Hamburg is areas like Volksdorf or Farmsen. They're mainly residential neighbourhoods but you really experience true Hamburg in areas like that. In the spring and summer they're the most green compared to any other city I've been to. Volskdorf is surrounded by forest. If you love greenery, this is one of the best cities in the world IMO. But central Hamburg where most tourists hang out at isn't like that. Of course since it's now winter you aren't missing out on too much by just hanging out by the harbour.

The seagulls are German. Of course they stare !😁 And thanks for taking me to one of my favourite cities here in Germany. Btw I prefer ALDI Süd to ALDI Nord ☺.

Nice to see Hamburg from a tourist point of view. BUT, you missed the best parts of Hamburg. Next time give me a sign, I show you around. AND good choice with the Franzbrötchen and the Heringsbrötchen. And I know bakeries, where the Franzbrötchen is even better than that you bought at the Schanzenbäckerei. Which is still good, so you don’t made a mistake.

The way you looked around and winched, then put your scarf up, then it kinda looked like you might have walked through something putrid (i.e., one of those local hamburglers had farted 🤣🤣🤣)
