I'm 18 and I was just diagnosed two weeks ago. I went to the ER and I was in diabetic ketoacidosis, at 630 and I almost died. This has honestly been the worse experience of my life but knowing I'm not alone and a lot of others went through these awful symptoms and now manage this condition successfully has given me hope and comfort.

Thanks for taking so frankly about your experiences. Every time I hear about someone who has survived and got a proper diagnosis of T1D and is living a more or less normal life, it lifts my spirits!
I was seeing an endocrinologist for something else. The last thing he always does is send you to the vampires to take you blood. About 5 or so minutes after I left, he called me on smartphone. He told me to park in a safe place, call 911 and go to the ED. I found out my blood sugar was 698. This was 5 year ago. And, there are times I do the why does it have to be me thing. Then I kick myself in the butt and get going.
    Stay healthy from T1D and COVID-19!! :)

I was diagnosed 1/18/1985, just after my 17th birthday. Had my 39th diaversary in 2024. Lots of tech changes during that time. No pumps back then (they weren't covered by insurance) and CGMs didn't exist. Needles were much larger than the nice 32-gauge ones now. Only pork or beef insulin. I swear I sound like an old guy saying "back in my days....." The worst part for me was it made an appointment at the Air Force Academy an impossibility. My father was in the USAF for 22 years, and I had dreamed my whole life of going the the Academy to learn to fly jets. Then right around the time you begin to apply for it, I got it yanked out from underneath me. There are worse conditions. And yes, at least T1 is treatable. I am very highly impacted by high blood sugars. They make me feel like crap, so I tend to run lower a lot - which is certainly not ideal. I hope you are doing well 5 years later!

17:50 Blood from a vein is normally dark Maddie. It’s dark purple, almost nearly black. Because venous blood has released its oxygen already. When people donate blood for the first time they think something is wrong when they first see it.

I was diagnosed at age 12. Did not end up in the hospital, just had a blood test because my doctor thought I had anemia and my mom thought I had diabetes. Mom was right. But, it took 6 days to get the blood test result because the doctor didn't think it needed to be rushed, and then it was another 12 days before I started insulin. Which I started at the endocrinologist's office on an outpatient basis. But, had the classic weight loss (112 pounds to 99 pounds in the course of a week or two), constant thirst, constant urination symptoms. (I had a yeast infection too, but not until 1 or 2 months after diagnosis.....)

    • @MaddieNielsen

Thank you for sharing your story.
My son was diagnosed on his 4th Birthday with Type 1. No one in our family has diabetes. It was a shock to us all. My son is 19.
My son started getting sick about a month before diagnosis. God was trying to tell us that there was something seriously wrong. However, diabetes was the farthest thought from my husband and my mind. -- It all started with my husband and son getting sick with a virus. They were both vomiting. I took my son to the doctor for a thorough check up. He had a blood test and a urine test. Everything was fine according to the doctor. He said that the virus will pass. As weeks went by Ben started eating a lot. I thought he was just going through a growth spurt. His second to
oldest brother had Endocrine issues, so we went to the Endocrinologist every 3 months.
I would always take all my sons to the Endo. It was kind of a day out for us. Anyway, as we were walking out of my son’s endo appointment a nurse who has know us for years ran after us carrying a small black case. She said, “ wait Wait,”. You forgot your glucose kit.” I said, my what???
She looked at me like I had two heads. The nurse said, Your son’s blood glucose test kit”. I asked her what that was for and she said, diabetes. I looked at her like she was crazy. “Well no one in my family has diabetes. We don’t have to deal with that.” Little did I know that the doctors visit would be so prophetic. On the way home we stopped off at McDonalds. Ben grabbed his brothers hamburgers and ate them. Then he proceeded to drink 2 milkshakes. This is a great deal of food to fit in an almost 4 year old’s tummy. But, obviously Ben was on a growth spurt. At the time, I had a very long twelve hour work schedule. I worked from 6pm to 6am, four days a week. My oldest son and husband were trying to stop Ben from drinking too much in such a short space of time. Poor Ben would just cry. That Friday, Ben looked really sick. I called his pediatrician and he asked me if Ben was keeping hydrated. I informed him that he sure was. He was drinking a lot. His pediatrician told me not to worry. As long as he was hydrated. That night I had to go to work. I couldn’t call off because there was no one to take my shift. My husband said that he would call me if Ben’s conditioned worsened. And that he did. I returned home to find my poor little boy emaciated. He looked like a skeleton. He was unrecognizable. We rushed him to the hospital. The ER doctor had no idea what was wrong with our son. It took 5 nurses to put an IV in. The doctor had to get a very experienced RN. It was actually the RN who smelled my son’s breath. She told the doctor to smell his breath. The doctor ordered tests. They came back. The doctor said what we’re looking at is our son is a Type 1 diabetic. His blood sugar was 1350. I thought I was going to pass out. The ER doctor called my son’s pediatrician to tell him the news. The pediatrician cried because it had only been 2 weeks since he had seen him for his physical. He felt terrible. I don’t blame the pediatrician. He had done a basic diabetic test and his BG was 79.
I think more doctors need to be educated about Type 1 diabetes. When doctors think of diabetes they think of unhealthy adults.

    • @MaddieNielsen
      @MaddieNielsen  5 лет назад +2

Exactly!! Thank you for sharing your son’s diagnosis story! It’s a very scary time! Having a bg of 1350 is very high! He is very lucky to be here. Blessings to you and you’re family! :)

Same thing happened to us. Sadly my 10 years old son got diagnosed with type1diabetic a year ago. As u said too, we never had a diabetic in both side of families and believe it or not we didn't even know such a health condition even exists. I am still in huge shock and can not believe that this happened to us😢😢
But more importantly, before his diagnosis (3 to 4 months before) he got sick really bad....fever, cough and etc...but we were told that is was a allergy!!!!!!
Now that I am going back and remembering his symptoms, they do exactly match with covid19... I am 95% sure he got the covid and the virus attacked his pancreas.... I do not buy this stupid genetic theory at all. I am sure virus and our foods are the real cause of TD1.

have you heard of the carnivore diet? Its a 0 carb/0 sugar, high fat/protein diet . humans shouldn't be eating any carbs/sugar, we were hunters thousands of years ago. Being able to process carbs is an adaptation when there weren't any animals to hunt. some people are more adapted than others and can keep making more insulin to keep blood sugar down, and others do not have that adaptation such as in the case of t1D.
