WARNING!! I bought a sink just like yours thought it would make a good dog washing station. Now My story: filled with some water then picked my 30 pound dog to set her in, that’s when the cheap legs folded in on me I’m on top of the dog and she’s kicking and yelping water everywhere. That’s when I built a 2x4 frame for sink and got rid of the metal leg. Now I’m loving the setup the dog is not so much.
Hey Al! I was thinking why not use the loft for the tank. And heat rises so you would ensure it stays warmer up there. You would definitely get a lot more pressure that way.. I think the way you have it will work from the weight of the water. But one the tank gets below a certain point you won’t have as much pressure. Don’t know what that will equate to. But it will be interesting to see.
we added a washtub in our garage next to the washing machine. best thing we ever did, i use this everyday for something. i soak my crock pot and baking sheets out there since its right off the kitchen. its nice to have it so i don't have ro do messy clean ups in the kitchen sink. after gardening i have someplace to wash up before coming inside. PLUS its saves money on our house insurance.
Very good video, I enjoyed the creativity of making the water stand as well as having your Wife and daughter interaction making the muffins , did your wife use the goats milk and would you use honey as the sweetener or do the blueberries have there own sweetness.
Al, when I visited Ireland a few years ago, I noticed that some of the sheep in the fields had colored areas on their rumps. The tour guide told us that powdered colored chalk was rubbed on the males abdomen and chest and when they “visited” the females, evidence was left on the females back! They used a different colored chalk on each male. Powdered chalk line chalk I guess. Maybe that will help to let you know if they got together when you weren’t watching.
The sign on your barn door can be a good design for your next t-shirt print. Also the portrait of each of your goats, Muse, Rusty, Mr Figaro and two best buddies dog too.
Second time replying, but Elles has it RIGHT!!! Great for an addition to your merchandise. I was also thinking the adding some Pig Iron bracing would help for bracing the water tank; either inside or outside for the wood legs. I would also add a tank basin under the tank in case of an accidental puncture, similar to a hot water tank basin, to prevent water going all over the place. Also wondering about waste water collection and how you would dispose of it, especially if contaminated. As a note, I've been watching since you started the Barn in the Spring and look forward for each video. Wednesday's and Sunday's are my days to watch a previous videos of your march to be self sustaining for you and your family. I've already made this reply to long, s God Bless and keep marching to your own tune. Semper Fi!

That new wash basin will be a perfect place for bathing your pets too. Al you should make a outside veggie washing station near your garden area this spring.
Al, just a suggestion. Why not put a vent between the workshop and the milking room? That way the heat will travel into the milking room when the heat is on. Stay safe and thank all of you for having us share your journey!
I really love watching Al's building and creating segments. He's definitely very good at figuring out how to make everything work out in the end. I also enjoy watching the animals being tended to. Very inspiring.
I sure hope Willow's date worked. Caleb looks a bit tiny next to her! That is one thing we are blessed with here, water. We have springs and streams all over the property.... except in our pasture. Still trying to work that out. The snow we got is gone now and it has warmed back up to the high 40s. I hope you don't get too much snow. Blessings to all.
70 Acres Studio ~ Justin Rhodes set up a downhill flow watering system on his farm, from the creek to the chicken pen and back to the creek. He has quick-connect fittings incorporated and can use the water for other purposes when needed. The same might work for your property. Search his channel for "ever-flow watering system."
Great idea Al - makes me want to do the same. With yours, even though you have a thermostat on the heater, if electricity goes out then it won't work, so I'd guard against that by not filling the tank all the way up - leave enough room for the expansion of ice...just in case.
I have almost an identical water setup in my pole barn, except it is fed from a spring. Just an FYI, you should probably get a water heater pan to put under the tank because if you have any humidity during warmer months that tank is going to sweat so much youre gonna think it has a leak. It will soak the boards it is sitting on and they will eventually rot. The water heater pan can be plumbed to drain right into the sink very easily. I also put a piece of shower pan liner on top of the platform to keep any moisture from getting to the wood stand. Home Depot sells it by the foot off an open roll... and it’s cheap.
I believe your water tank will work beautifully. Those mini muffins look yummy. My grandma used to send us out to pick blueberries for her to use to bake all year.
That was so nice seeing Olivia helping her mom in the kitchen, mother and daughter time! Al you have a nice set-up in you workshop I can't wait to see it when you are done!
We've had 'non predicted' snow for days now -- that happens up on a ridge sometimes, but an awful lot lately! Did you mention how you are going to fill the tank? Must have missed that. We used a heated hose to fill our horse troughs for one year, then switched to a light weight hose that we just bring indoors when done.
Water tank is a great idea! If you need more "water pressure", you could put the tank in the loft. This would increase height and water pressure. That's all if it would fit up there. Like others have said below, strapping it to the wall would be a great idea. Love seeing Gina and Olivia work together. That mother daughter bond is priceless! ...and Olivia is a confident young woman!!
If you go with pvc valves get the ball valves with replacement type handles as the handles do break over time. As for work benches Yamaha outboard engine grates make great benches.
Have you considered a ceiling fan for the shop to circulate the warm air that rises throughout the shop? Might add comfort and save$$ My preference is to set the airflow direction from low to high. I don't like to be under a down draft.
Al, I would consider rebuilding the base or at least beefing it up. Remember, the base will be holding up 900 pounds of water and tank when filled. I use pressure-treated wood when building tank stands because of chance of leaks or condensation overtime. It’s great to see all your hard work making your dreams come true.
They would roost in there, and that is a bad habit for them to get into. They will lay when they get ready, and Al can put hay in there then. Al- please consider strapping that tank to the wall. I would hate for Livie to bump into it and the tank fall on her.
I agree about adding nesting material to the nesting boxes. Al can block entrance to the boxes at night with a piece of wood to discourage the hens from sleeping in them.
It looks good to me, if I had the exact dimensions I could tell you exactly how many psi you would be getting at the bottom of a 100 gallon tank given 8 pounds per gallon. Was the tank too tall to put it upstairs in the barn? That would have given you considerably more water pressure. Thanks for sharing your homestead with us, Jimmy
The table was perfect for the water container to sit on. Will it be sturdy enough to hold the weight of the tank once you fill it? Great idea Al! You used solid sturdy material & with 4" x 4" legs it should hold up, right? Will you need to brace it mid way up to the wall? Is there a chance it could tip over? Those blueberry muffins looked delicious!
To fully drain the storage tank, maybe put a wedge under one side to force the water to the low point. We used barrel wedges in our factory for 55 gallon drums. The Blueberry muffins looked so good! 🧁🧁🧁🙌😇😇😇🤟🤟
No advice on the water system but, about your workbenches, you 'may' want to consider #2x4Basics. They're brackets and fittings for building a variety of assemblies, including workbenches, shelves...etc. It would make quick work of you shop needs. Excellent video, #TeamLumnah! Thank you for it!
If you don't end up having enough pressure at your sink try removing the aerator from the faucet. It takes a little extra pressure to push through those.
When cutting wood that's been sitting in the dirt, use a wire brush to clean it off. the saw blade will last longer. It's the same way you don't let your chain saw hit the ground.
Morning Al. I had to take a double take on your water tank. It looks just like an energy drink can. Your poor buck is so short. I noticed it before but didn't think much of it but then when willow came back into heat was wondering if it could be an issue or not. Thanks for the vids.
May want to think about adding a ceiling fan to move the warm air out of the peak of your work shop. Sure it is very warm up there and would be more comfortable and more efficient to move it around the shop. Cheers!
Czack669 I’d buy one of those. We’ve watched so many videos my boys say that now. I was working in my garage a few weeks ago and my 6yr old said that after I screwed some things together.
Hey guys! Out of curiosity would you guys want to do a tractor review? My wife and I are looking at some for our own homestead. Be cool to know your own experiences with one your size. Pros/cons go bigger/smaller. Love y’all’s channel! Cheers!
Put a tee on the output of the storage tank so you can put a faucet other than the sink for other water projects. That way you can use both a hose to water the goats and other animals and the sink at the same time. I also would add x bracing under the tank as it will be very heavy.
The weight of the tank is on the tabletop. And the tabletop is mostly resting on the stretchers except the front and back pieces. The rest are only toenailed into the legs through endgrain! That table isn’t strong enough for all the weight of a full tank.
6:35 sounds like me first thing in the morning ... That tank gonna be a crusher full ... Strap it up ... Add another crossbrace on the front of tank stand so legs don't splay ... Agree sink needs better stand ... Wet dog moves ... Plus you may use for washing in future so build for being full of water weight ...
Add a shelf or two to your water tower and maybe close it in to make a cabinet. Keep cleaning supplies and such next to the sink. Can't have too many shelves.
Did you go to the old manual thermostat type no good one with a clock on it . You may have said how are you going to fill it up and how you going to check the level it's got like a Clear capacity. Sight or put a external one on !! Just asking
That platform looks nice! We're at a similar stage- we have the tank, and now I have to build the platform and do all the fittings to have running water in the RV.
As for the mounting, you may have an elevation issue. Oh yeah, the water tank could go higher also... (cymbal rimshot). LOL, my burning question was how many eggs?
hey Al, might want to think about mounting the tank horizontal above the sink as that space is empty right now and that will give you better head fall for the water and not use up any precious floor space. it could be supported by the rafters and wall and no legs to get in the way. would make it easier to sweep the shop floor with less legs. just a thought. great videos. jim in central florida
i thought the tank would have been best placed in the high store area which would give a approx 0.4 bar head.. where it is now is under 0.1 to the sink tap. and it will be warmer up there so reducing freeze risk.
Since your well water is so far from the barns. You may want to get a old trailer made from a pickup truck bed and put a 275 gal IBC tote in it with a small battery or gas pump. That way you can use the Kabota to move water to barrels in the different pens and pastures. It you put a float shutoff valve in the top of it you can back up to the house faucet and connect the garden hose and start it to fill and went it gets topped off it will shut itself off with you having to stand there and watch it fill.
Calab didn't need any hints this time. Have you thought of putting the breeding pair in the larger half of the old goat shed overnight or when the weather isn't great? It might increase the breeding chances, as well as providing shelter from the winter weather.
@@gelwood99 yes but the breeding pen is not hooked up with the other large section that the big goats used. Caleb's and Zeak's pen is hooked up to the section the babies used..
You would benefit big time, if you would drop an electrical outlet next to every upright in your shop! I'd suggest three circuits, one each side, one along front/&upper level. Just above your horizontal beam would be about right
I suppose one of those hot water heater blankets on that water tank would add some protection from freezing also. 100 gallons of water is near 800 lbs, so I'd strap that thing to the wall for safety if it was mine. Good luck.
Hi al have you ever thought about setting up a premier net around the green house chickens and putting a little door in the big door so they could go outside to.
If your going to do rain catchment you will need to put a overflow pipe at the top and route it out of the barn or into the sink so it can drain out of the barn.
Just a little hint for the muffinsIf you hold back a tablespoon or so of the flour, and toss the blueberries in that bit of flour before adding them to the batter, it will keep the blueberries from sinking to the bottom of the muffins.
How come the thermostat is set at 47 but it's 62 in the shop ? Is there something wrong with the thermostat that it won't shut the heater off ? Just curious as why the water tank isn't in the loft area, it would give you more pressure and it is warmer up there, due to heat rising.
A section of clear PVC hose on a barbed fitting from the output of the tank will act as a sight glass letting you see the amount of water in the tank. If there is not enough pressure from the height you can always pickup a foot pump made for boats to pull water from the tank and pump it to the faucet without needing an electric pump. Any thoughts on turning some of the scrap lumber around the property into a lumber storage rack? Start collecting all the left over after a project or used but still good wood and placed in a central easy to sort location. With some extra roofing metal you can even stick it to the outside of a shed
Al you need to build a breeding pen goat house... Then when they say we ain't done yet you could just leave them together even if the weather isn't good. Then they at least have shelter. Love the videos thanks for sharing with us
Kim Mitchell he could always use the front of the male goat house for that right now. Too late to build one now unless he just makes a temp shelter in the breeding area.
@@TYGER0902 never to late now he has a heated work shop.... Omg I'd be building all winter just to keep busy. I live in NE Wi. It gets 40 to 80 below depending on wind speed. I would be in heaven to have a heated garage or work shop. When I bought this house my garage had a big pot belly stove to heat it, it made me want this place even more... But our crooked insurance made us removed it or they wouldn't insure us!!!# so now in the winter I hibernate and gain weight. Too cold plus I'm getting old. 54, 3 weeks ago.

@@Caboladk The old goat barn has a separate section, remember, he had the babies locked in it to separate them from Willa overnight.
@@gelwood99 yes but the breeding pen is not hooked up with the other large section that the big goats used. Caleb's and Zeak's pen is hooked up to the section the babies used..
Are you going to have wood heat as a back up in the shop ? In case of a power failure .
You would benefit big time, if you would drop an electrical outlet next to every upright in your shop! I'd suggest three circuits, one each side, one along front/&upper level. Just above your horizontal beam would be about right
Do you use grk brand screws? They are driving so nice and easy. Thanks
I would suggest to install a roof drainage gutter system to avoid damage to the fassades (see 6:02).
I suppose one of those hot water heater blankets on that water tank would add some protection from freezing also. 100 gallons of water is near 800 lbs, so I'd strap that thing to the wall for safety if it was mine. Good luck.
Oh,, funny, i just suggested that in the above comment reply😂🕵️
@@jeanniegriffin1692 Great minds(or first names) think alike. LOL ; )
I'm worried that the water weigh will will be to much for the table, and Yes strap it to the wall some way.
Hi al have you ever thought about setting up a premier net around the green house chickens and putting a little door in the big door so they could go outside to.
My father use gravity feed water storage in our camping trailer and it worked great.
If your going to do rain catchment you will need to put a overflow pipe at the top and route it out of the barn or into the sink so it can drain out of the barn.
When you pulled into Home Depot and put the truck in park, what was that control that you adjusted at the end?
That controls the snow plow he just put on the truck!

You have made a very nice table for the water tank, actually another one could be very handy on the other side of your washing station.
If you need more height for better pressure, you could secure the tank in the loft only if you need the added pressure.
Yep also horizontal tuckt away in the narrow space
Was thinking of that myself Can Be a quick fix. Could of though about it before the Build.
23:06 tanner is up trying to get something on the counter behind you lol
Just a little hint for the muffinsIf you hold back a tablespoon or so of the flour, and toss the blueberries in that bit of flour before adding them to the batter, it will keep the blueberries from sinking to the bottom of the muffins.
it will work but make sure it gets some air or will not syphon out
Doing good on the water tank _you might want to strap it to the wall to prevent tip overs😋👍
Dumb question....why not, put the water tank in the loft and plumb down to the sink?
Do you have a light in there to make like it still daylight that’s how I keep my chicken 🐓 laying in the winter. I use solar 💡 for the pathway
Andrew H ~ Great ideas!
I would have saved all the scrap wood, I make name plates out of scrap wood,Sad to waste anything you can use later!!!
enough is enough! put a top on that feeder already! love the videos. keep up the good work!!
do you think they want hay in the nesting boxes?
Al, I wonder if you could have mounted that tank horizontal above the sink. Hang it with some straps from the top plate of the wall.
Al, you might think about putting bedding in the nesting boxes ?
