Hey Ken! I can’t say anything that hasn’t already been said but you are my hero.. I agree with all you say . You have command of the Jazz vocabulary! I have learned a wealth of information not to mention how my vinyl collection has grown . Just wanted to let you know you are appreciated! You are a valuable source. Thank you!
Hell yeah, Ken! I recently picked up the live Milestone pressing of Joe Henderson in Japan-man, what a killer record. A tight Japanese backing band which includes some great Rhodes playing. He's clearly vibing off the audience, and you can tell they're really feeling it, too...
Very good commentary. I have a few Joe Henderson records on vinyl. 2 volumes of The State of the Tenor. Also Miroslav Vitous' Mountain in the Clouds a very cool record with Henderson, John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock and Jack DeJohnette.
Once again, thank you Ken. I love Joe Henderson since couple of months now. I'm planning to get the One Page (in the Classic Vinyl Series) reissue soon.
Thank you for this watching one of your old videos because I did not really know who Joe was. Seen some of the albums before don’t know the music. You talk from the heart as a true jazz fan and I like that. Thank you for making this. I should go sleep now. Good night.
Hey Ken, Inner Urge is being reissued this February for the first time. It’s one of my favorite jazz albums and was pleased to hear I will not have to pay hundreds for an original.
Ken great Joe Henderson collection I'm still missing the Milestones you showed and in and out on blue note . Joe was an excellent player I love his playing on Pete Laroca Basra very mesmerising and on Bobby Hutchersons album Stick up they sound great together. But the real sleeper is his record " The Elements with Alice Coltrane and Charlie Haden it was just reissue last year definitely check that on Ken I think you will like it really spiritual. I really enjoyed your video have a great week Ken. Lovellandrew
2 great Milestone albums are Canyon Lady and the live album "If you're not part of the solution, youre part of the problem" with woody shaw. I still need to get into more of his work..great video Ken!
I just got a copy of "Our Thing" on Music Matters. Say what you will about the MM reissues, sometimes it's the only way to get a hold of some of these titles without paying a ridiculous price. I will definitely be on the lookout for some of the other Joe Henderson LPs. Thanks, Ken!
Great tenor virtuoso with his distinctive sound.......... I might have some of his songs in jazz compilations I own.......... Have you heard Double Rainbow from 95 ........he plays Jobim bossa Nova songs......... I found it cheap some years ago and it's great and also goes for some money nowadays(Verve double lp) ........... Bests
yeah Alan yours is the promo version which is a single lp.......... Mine is the proper double one......... Has a couple more songs.......... Check discogs www.discogs.com/Joe-Henderson-Double-Rainbow-The-Music-Of-Carlos-Jobim/master/228698
Hi Ken, love your sights and the history you tell. To a UK novice like myself with limited funds what are LPs i should be looking for over this side of the pond? Would be good if you point out which labels in UK and Europe to look out for and the good cheaper releases. Thankyou
I had many of the Joe Henderson stuff and you are right was great. I also agree with you to search out the liberty stuff. Not related to Joe Henderson but the Liberty pressings with the light blue and black label were the best, you got most of what the originals offered.
Henderson is an undervalued artist. If he had stayed in the game and lived longer he;d be a bigger star today. I love all his albums, from the Blue Notes to the Milestones .
Another excellent jazz LP video, Ken! Thanks. For those like would like some 'mo Joe, check out his work as a sideman with Horace Silver. I particularly love The Cape Verdean Blues, and of course Song For My Father. JH has some pretty memorable solos, IMHO.Also, great rec for buying Division of Liberty 'VAN GELDER' Blue Notes. That's how I built most of my collection back in the early part of this century when Japanese collectors drove original pressing prices through the roof. $20-$35 vs. hundreds or thousands.
I forget his great sideman work. And you're correct, Libertys are still a great way to build a Blue Note collection. Folks better jump on those as prices are rising.
Did you happen to get the new Shorter album? I am curious to see if you think it’s worth the money. Very cool you’re getting to interview him. I look forward to reading that one. Great video as always Ken. All my Joe Henderson is on Blue Note but it’s good hear about his non-Blue Note stuff.
you mean starter albums? You might take a look at my video discussing same or...Cannonball Adderley, Something Else; Hank Mobley, Soul Station; Miles Davis Steamin; Ella Fitzgerald Swings Lightly with Nelson; and Monk on BLue Note Volume 1 or 2
I own the album "Hank Crawford More Soul", I picked that up in a record store awhile back. I just recently picked up a record " Putt Wickman ", I'm really digging his music.
P.S. I aways thought if I could bring ONE composer back to hear something it would be Cole Porter to get his reaxtion to Joe's title track version on LP "Love For Sale" Holy shit that's a ripper!!!!!!
The Kicker.1969.Nuff said.Ohh but love tune "Loose Change" with Ron Carter and Al Foster on "State Of The Tenor" always blows my mind.So many great LP's.If you are going to list em from Coltrane,Rollins,Griffin.and Henderson would be the pure players (i.e. those not acknowledged for playing and composing like Shorter) but a list of modern great tenor players that didn't include Mr.Henderson shouldn't be taken seriously

A wonderful talent . Unity is a great album that is available and well worth a listen .

Great job brother. His side work was phenomenal as well.

You are absolutely right, and those are not cheap, and they are becoming collectible as they stopped pressing them.
another great video Ken..
Thank you.

Yes, even the end of the Blue Note road blue and black labels can sound great on a good hifi
I don't know about Joes issue with drugs but He was a Major smoker that will keep ones weight down
I only know a little. But he had that "comeback' in the 90s, but didn't live long after that. :(
Coltrane was a great artist but I always gravitated towards Joe Henderson

Mr BPD!! I've only listened once to Emanon. It's very ambitious and intricate. Still trying to figure it out.
Being new to jazz what do you suggest for top 5 albums one should pursue.... Thanks
you mean starter albums? You might take a look at my video discussing same or...Cannonball Adderley, Something Else; Hank Mobley, Soul Station; Miles Davis Steamin; Ella Fitzgerald Swings Lightly with Nelson; and Monk on BLue Note Volume 1 or 2
I understand you dont like MM pressings but can you make a video of what you have from them anyway? :)
That's funny! I don't have many but can talk about what I do have. THANKS
What do think about Hank Crawford?
Haven't heard in a while Which of his albums are your favorites, Jenn?
I own the album "Hank Crawford More Soul", I picked that up in a record store awhile back.
I just recently picked up a record " Putt Wickman ", I'm really digging his music.
In one of your videos you talked about "Wayne Shorter Etcetera ", I went ahead and purchased that.
I'm waiting for it to come in, I can't wait!

Wasn't Blue Bossa written by Kenny Dorham?
Hmm. Dunno!
Nice work. Also a fan of Joe. Also agree with your thoughts on MM. Nice, but not for me.
