The part about taking cogs out you don't use if my favourite to be honest, on my MTB I have 10s in 11s spacing, on my older road bike I had 7s in 8s spacing, and the one I'm building will have 9s in 11s like he's running as well. Not because I'm a crazy hill climber or anything, but a 13-28 (13-14-15-16-17-19-22-25-28) gives me exactly every gear I need here in Belgium. I used to run my main bikes full singlespeed, and 1x to me is the perfect combination of luxury and simplicity. The improved chainline helps me not drop chains, basically ever, even with a normal road RD and non-narrow/wide chainring.
Actually Japan has a lot of hill climb races. We have a national championship too. A few hundred to more than 10000 people participating at a single event. The courses are longer too. About 10-20km in distance, and 800-1200m of climbing. Bike tech is really interesting, also.
Taiwan do have climb races too, and kind of the majority of the race. It's often under the KOM name somehow lol And the elevation gains just hurts (some hits like 3000m+?). Haven't participated in any of them.
@@joserubero7002 2019 was the last year of the rim brake with the frame design in this video. In 2020 they changed the frame to a more aero design. Some rim brakes were produced with the 2020 frame design.
It would be interesting to see if there are watts to be saved by going with 23-25c tires, wider rim and tubeless or latex inner setup. With the current thinking on contact patch and rolling resistance, Andrew may have some significant gains here!
My dad built my criterium bikes, in the early 90’s. He’d take four sprockets out of a 7 speed. So I’d race with 3 gears. On flat fast crits, that’s all I needed. Makes the bike lighter too.

When Alex first joined the show he said he preferred a lighter rim brake bike and was then made to go back on his statement and apologise the following week. One of the latest builds where Alex put a Chinese groupset on the canyon AL Endurace he stated Rim brakes in shimano are only available at calris level. When Ollie did a video using the same bike and they put Dura Ace on, he stated no groupset manufacturer makes rim brakes at high level anymore.. Even though when shimano dropped 12 speed Si advised its available in rim brakes at dura ace and ultegra level which it is.. Rim brakes are also available in Sram red axis, sram force and campy across the range... I messaged ollie on Instagram advising what he had said was incorrect and I linked a merlin cycles Advert for dura ace 12 speed he saw the post and shared it on his page tagging me in for all of 2 minutes before deleting the post... Imo gcn are extremely bias or stupid as they don't even seem to know what there own sponsors sell 🤷♂️

Should there be a weight category in hill climbing? From what I understand weight is very important in hill climbing. Being over 200lbs I get smoked by almost everyone when I'm tootling about on my bike.

The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.
It would, but bike weight isn't a big factor when climbing. There's this thing called system weight (rider weight, accessories, bike). So for example, you weigh 75kg, the bike weighs 7kg, accessories/water bottles 2kg... You get the gist of it, practice makes perfect no matter your system weight.
These featherweight bikes will most probably flex under your weight. I would go for a „thicker“ and stiffer frame, I would follow a very similar components choice with the exception of tires (I would not go below 25 front, 28 rear) and wheels (the stiffest possible).
Apparently some of the bikes were fixed gear. I guess it depends on the gradient. If it’s a steady consistent gradient, then fixed (easy gear) could work, but if it had flatter sections then less so

I really like Andrew, but this sentence turned my stomach.
I think it's a cultural thing. They "insult" as a way to give the sentence a flavor of being hard?? Not sure. They even insult the people they court for some reason.
what i love about Andrew's bike is it still looks like a proper road bike that's not skewered and gutted for the sake of being light.
Schmolke parts aren't in everyone's budget unfortunately. No point in chopping the drops off if it only saves 5 grams.

In Chile we have a hill climb race every year. Many people come as official or unofficial racers. I think it's not stupid at all.

13-28. He said he had an 11speed 11-28 and two sprockets were taken out to move the cassette more to the right. 13-14-15-17-19-21-23-25-28

yeah old horseshoe is quite varied in gradient, so doesn't suit a singlespeed so well
