Psychonauts is a platform video game created by Tim Schafer and starring the voice of Richard Horvitz as Raz. The game was released for Microsoft Windows, Xbox and PlayStation 2. It was released on Steam on October 11, 2006, as an Xbox Original through Xbox Live Marketplace, and on the GameTap subscription service. On November 5, 2009, Psychonauts became available through the online distribution service GOG.com through their partnership with Majesco. In September 2011, an OS X port was released, with a Linux port released through the Humble Indie Bundle V on May 2012. The PlayStation 2 version was re-released on PlayStation Network on August 28, 2012.
Psychonauts is based on the character Raz, a young boy gifted with psychic abilities who runs away from the circus to try to sneak into a summer camp for those with similar powers in order to become a "Psychonaut", a spy with psychic abilities. He finds that there is a sinister plot occurring at the camp that only he can stop. The game is centered on the strange and imaginative minds of various characters that Raz enters as a Psychonaut-in-training/"Psycadet" in order to help them overcome their fears or memories of their past, so as to gain their help and progress in the game. Raz gains use of several psychic abilities during the game that are used for both attacking foes and solving puzzles.
The game received critical acclaim and several accolades, but suffered from poor sales, and the publisher Majesco suffered financial difficulties relating to Psychonauts and other titles in its catalogue. The game has since gained a cult following.

Well, word is there IS a Psychonauts 2 being crowdfunded, but I haven't the foggiest idea on the release date. It's not a kickstarter, but something called fig-something-or-other that they're taking income from.

It’s a reference to Raz’s original name and you can see Raz’s original designed model in the outhouse in the last cutscene

This game was a perfect combination of educational and entertaining. It combines all the fun of being a psychic adventurer and warrior with concepts of psychology such as collective consciousness, psycho-dynamic Freudian therapy like dream interpretation, and actual talking therapy for insane enemies. I also enjoy those Censor creatures. Always saying "NO!" all the time.
Not to mention a literal inner critic.

Well this whole thing DOES reek of a mix of Invader Zim and Laika, so what the hell, it could work.
And the best part is, we're FINALLY getting a sequel! Yep, it's finally funded and in production even as we speak! I don't have a release date (yet), but I imagine if it's anything like this game, it'll take at least til 2020. 2021 at the latest.
My thoughts exactly! The style is very compatible with Laika's style, especially the style they used in Paranorman.
Coraline...Peter Chan was also a pre-production designer(uncredited) for the Laika's Coraline cartoon... A little time after he done Psychonauts.

Like you know he's a villain, but you don't know when it happens, or it clearly shows you, but you didn't know at first.
Boyd's story is interesting. He was fired from his job, which angered him to the point of developing the pyromaniac persona of the Milkman.
This persona was contained within him, only occasionally revealing itself. Until Coach Oleander gave him a post-hypnotic suggestion to burn down the asylum to cover up any evidence. This hypnosis is manifested in his mind by the scout group.
Wasn't he hypnotized just so he could guard the asylum?
@@princedino7396 Yes, but the Milkman was Oleander's contingency plan to cover his actions by burning the asylum with the evidence. Those girl scouts were supposed to keep his programing dormant until Oleander triggered the Milkman, but Raz activated him by prematurely.
And that‘s not even it, he‘s connected to Milla‘s tragic story. He was the one who burned down the house. The demon like things in Milla‘s secret room and Boyd‘s „Mini-Bosses“ are exactly the same.
@@Adeyum64 No, that's just a generic nightmare creature (similar to how all censors are alike). The fire in the orphanage started by an accident when Milla wasn't there to stop it.
(Outside of the story, you were originally supposed to fight the nightmares in Milla's mind, but the designers cut it out because it didn't fit the theme of the level and inserted it post hoc in Boyd's mind instead.)
Boyd burned down the building he worked at prior to being fired as part of his pyschotic break.
1:50:00 I just realized when Gloria has this negative mood-swing and says those lines, and when you have context from her memory slides, she basically viewed Raz as her mother in that moment and is venting all her unfiltered feelings to her. Which is sad, because now that her mother is dead, Gloria will never be able to do that on her own and move on, that is until Raz came in fortunately. It’s pretty dark and sad when you think about it.
Thanks for adding a little bit of back story for Gloria. This truly is a brilliant game. Hopefully part 2 will happen one day.
+StoryGamer thank you for creating this video I find myself playing this game for 72 hours just to see all my favorite cut scenes. and hear all my favorite commentary. I have traveled this virtual world to view every back story possible and while this doesn't have each of those tiny pieces. l can't criticize. no one would watch the 6 hour video that would be.
Also, 5:31 note the words that the coach mouths along to when Raz is quoting his pamphlet "And your father looks at you" "with shame in his eyes." Nice bit of foreshadowing there.

3:04:44 Man I love this scene. Shit is just going down on the top floor as 3 trained psychonauts are throwing down, but down here all the people you helped are unintentionally building the already intense situation to an even further boiling point.

I haven’t played this game in 12 years and when I saw that part again I was like “UUUGH NOOOO.” I remembered failing every time and watching him do his stupid cartwheel over and over lol
The meat circus was so annoying because I kept falling down and missing the trapeze nets that spring you back up, so I would always have to climb my way back up. But I would never be quick enough to catch up with Oleander before he was mauled by the meat bunnies.

One thing I love about this game is that even though this is one of the most hilarious and dark games I’ve ever played, you can rewatch it and notice cool little details every time. Like when raz is reading the pamphlet to everyone, there’s a part where coach mouths a section of it as raz says it. This is one of those games where you can analyze every detail and can see that the game developers thought everything through
This game has got to have one of the longest cliffhangers in gaming history...10 YEARS!! Good God I was 12 when I played this. Come on 2018!!!

Did you check out the VR game, Psychonauts in The Rhombus of Ruin? It's supposed to pick up when Psychonauts ends, and it ends when Psychonauts 2 begins.
ya I hate those Cliffhanger Story Endings that are intended to be left as Cliffhangers so the players or readers can determine for themselves. it really leaves a bitter taste because people want a actual conclusion.
Actually the cliff hanger at the end of this Game is revealed in Psychonauts: In the Rhombus of Ruin. Its available now and in it you rescue Lili's father. However it does present a new cliff hanger so if you don't play PitRoR Psychonauts 2 will probably give you a refresher coarse on how this games cliffhanger went down. I completely recommend checking out PitRoR thought it definitely fuels your need for more.

I really enjoy these games cause they actually acknowledge how raz works real hard and they appreciate it~ too many games have the troupe that the main character basically does everything and is disregarded and or completely ignored, but in this game raz himself astounds and continues to impress even the best of the psychonauts with his abilities and they show their gratitude for the work he does~ i think it makes everyone feel good that raz gets recognized and I love it

I was too young to finish(Cause of blockbuster) rarity(hard to find) and small(I played when I was like 12 and didn't understand psychiatric stuff I just saw pg and was like "Adam and MOrgan" said they say ass).
that said this game and the man who made this game are examples or creativity and dreams coming true at its finest. I hope it has a sequal and many more people can accomplish this same feat.

My gawd. It really is all one story that happens within the span of days 😭 both games are masterpieces and flow perfectly into each other.
to really remaster this game they would probably have to start from scratch, and even then, with all that work they might as well have made another game, kingdom hearts remix was started from scratch, so thats why it took so long.
Luckily, they're making a sequel.

You know there's the Sly HD Collection of the original three games out these days...along with Ratchet and Clank and Jak so you can get all of them these days.

I never managed to check this game out when it came out but recently there was a steam sale and it was only $1.45 and I must say that I underpaid, very entertaining game, well-written, I only regret that I never bought it sooner.

Psychonauts was a commercial failure (since the publisher were Majesco). the developers had to buy back the IP rights from Majesco, and remastered (or just ported, dunno) the game to the Xbox One and PS4 (I do not know if the Xbox One release is just the original version via B/C). The game is avaliable on Game Pass, and got a VR sequel, and a sequel on Xbox One, PS4 (B/C with PS5), and Xbox Series X.

I always saw this game on the shelf but I hadn't bothered to check it out until recently, really loving what I'm seeing.

i loved this game, for as glitchy as it was i was still able to have lots of fun, god every time i got to a new world it was like dang is it gonna be harder for me to platform and of course it was, the ending kicked my ass cus of whole grinding aspect kept making me fall off till i barely had any lifes left, but i beat the game the ending glitched out again for me but i beat it and man was i satisfied although right after i did feel like seeing psychonauts 2 even now.

Last I checked, Double Fine has it on sale for $1 on Steam to celebrate Psychonauts 2’s upcoming release. If you haven’t gotten a chance to play it yet, now is a great chance. It’s also on Microsoft Game Pass for Xbox and PC with the sequel too.

The game is great, but the entire final level assumes the controls are way better than they actually are.
