It was incredible to have four-time Grammy Award winner Antonio Sanchez visit the Drumeo studios, where he shared his creative concepts for building solos over a groove, over a form, as well as completely open solos - in addition to sharing his techniques for sustaining motivic development throughout your solos.
Antonio has become one of the most sought after drummers in the international jazz scene, with his playing featured in more than one hundred albums and having performed with some of the biggest names including Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Charlie Haden, Gary Burton, and Toots Thielmans - as well as composing the innovative jazz drummer-led score for the Oscar-winning Best-Picture film, “Birdman”.
Wow, I can't believe how many people don't know anything about soloing in jazz music. I mean, soloing is not about showing how fast you can move or how many notes you can pull out in few seconds. Soloing is about telling your story. I prefer to talk to a person who can discuss one topic but from many perspective rather than a guy who can not focus on one thing and go to random topic every time. If you can't understand what I'm saying, you are missing a lot of things in music.
This is amazing. He makes the drums talk. There's nothing random in this solo; no meaningless groovy fill. Pure subtlety and well-thought development.
Never read so much hate for a masterful craftsman like Antonio Sanchez.... listen to the music he creates and enjoy it. Stop searching for chops- you can find that from immature drummers.
He and Pat should never separate because they sound so beautiful together. He brings out so much in Metheny's style and creativity.

Is this the guy who did he Birdman soundtrack? That movie is one of my all time favourites, in large part to the soundtrack! Some people complain about the "repetitiveness" but I love that mesmerizing constant groove, interspersed with some surprising fills! I'd have this as the background music to my life if I could!
His left foot has its own brain. :D
“Not quite my tempo.”
This is not my tempo!
From an athlete perspective, Antonio is what you call different.
Dynamic control, a lot of drummers need more of that !
Antonio is amazing. Mind-blowing with his independence. The most impressive drummer I have seen in the last 20 years. Justin Faulkner has similarly blown me away with musicality and mastery. This video is so inspiring!
We love Antonio Sanchez! He is truly one of the most gifted drummers of all time.
De México para el mundo, el gran Antonio Sanchez.
Absolutly stunning! He is sensitiv, original and very harmonic... Bravo! I think when inspired by Pat Metheny he's really bringing it out. Saw him two times live with Pat and it was absolutly stunning! Bravo!
What a great musician. It’s all about sound and building captivating, entrancing rhythms. The fact that he is also playing with extraordinary independence and perfect technique just make it more mind blowing. One of the great drummers for sure. So musical.
Saw him yesterday playing with Pat Metheny, absolutely crazy mindblowing stuff!
brilliant so much control !! buddy singles round the kit mind blowing
Antonio Sánchez! One of my favorite drummers ever!
