Thank you for the review! Just finished the book and your review is the only one i agree with. This book really shows the effects of cult-mentality and fear--not just a fanatic fear of God/Devil, but also the intense, mind-controlling fear of non-conformity and its very real, very dangerous consequences. This is a very thrilling, very touching, very powerful read that will leave you thinking about it for weeks! I highly, highly recommend despite any slight criticisms I have. SPOILERS AHEAD Those fears (of God/Devil and of social non-conformity) literally control people--hundreds of individuals--to the point where Abitha has the whole town salivating for her death and torture. They completely lose their humanity in order to conform and not be guilty by association. As tragic as it was, loved that social commentary. I wish that the townspeople would have learned a lesson in the end and been told that it was their inhumanity that made her cruel to them... instead of Abitha and Sampson fueling their belief that the Devil got her with his wiles and now she's going after the town just for good old Satanism--but i also understood the point that people aren't always wise gurus. She had no desire to right the town's wrongs or make them better people. She simply--and understandably--wanted revenge. Sometimes, hurt simply leads to people pulling away and growing vengeful. This is what happened with Abitha. Was it love and peace? No. Was it realistic and understandable? Yes. Similarly, I wish the sheriff who was kind to her and Good Wife Carter could have had better endings. But, again, life is not fair. It is often cruel. And just because i wanted a fairy tale ending does not make this a bad book! The only thing I did not like was the epilogue. 300 years is very long time to hold a grudge against all of humanity, especially when she knew some very kind people. She was a person herself. I don't understand why she became a witch killing random passers-by in the woods. That's the only part of this book I have real criticism for, but it's only a blip in the grand scheme of the book.
I've tried to buy this book twice, and failed twice, first time lost in the post, second tike the seller just didn't feel like sending it, so F this book.
i just read this and adored it, what a fantastic review!
You sold me with mentioning the Studio Ghibli style. Very fairytale like, with some horror elements.
Great Review of a FANTASTIC book! I consider this book a Horror Fairytale! It deserves a film adaptation by none other than Guillermo DelToro!
That would be amazing! He’s the perfect director for a story like this!
This is great representation of Native American spirits lore and chefs kiss as an origin story for a Native American cryptid. Loved this book!
I picked it up because I was drawn to the beautiful artwork on the cover but it quickly became one of my favorite books!
